The crowd disperses towards the tables where they can bid on items donated for the event tonight. Brownie walks over to me—her hand cradling her belly that holds our newest addition to the family.
“How was it?” she asks.
“Amazing, baby.” I lean in and kiss her cheek.
I can tell she’s exhausted from all the prep for tonight, but she’d never admit to it. This is all too important to her ever not to give it everything she's got. I'm going to do my part tonight with a foot massage and catering to her every whim.
Zach reaches for Brownie, and she takes him from me, careful to hold him on her hip because of her belly.
“I love you, my sweet baby boy," she whispers to him.
The pregnancy hormones have made planning the event this year a bit more of an emotional ride for her. I pull them both close to me.
“It’s okay,” I assure her.
“I know.” She sniffles. “It’s just these stupid hormones.”
“Only a few more months to go.”
She nods, and Zach pats his little hand on her cheek like he's trying to wipe at the tears.
I know what will cheer her up.
“I was going to surprise you later, but I think it might help cheer you up.”
“What’s that?”
“I think I cracked the code with Nonna’s lasagna.”
“Babe, I love you, but last time you tried to make it, you forgot to cook the noodles."
“Beginners mistake.”
“It was your tenth try.”
“I think I might surprise you.”
“Really?” She smiles, her mood already lifting. “Why is that?”
“I asked your dad to make it.”
She laughs. “Then why didn’t you lead with that?”
“I was going to see how long I could convince you that I made it.”
Brownie cups my face in her hand. "Might be best to stick to what you know.”
“And what’s that?”
“Being the best husband and dad in the world, throwing a football, and—” She pushes up onto her toes and whispers in my ear. “And rocking my world in bed every night.”
“I think I can handle that.”
