I looked up as one of the officers poked their head in. “You’re wanted out front.”
“I’ll be there. Just give me a moment.”
I waited till she was gone and then stepped out into the hallway, following it around to the emergency stairwell. I climbed down a few levels all the way to the underground car park. There was a barricade around the door, which I promptly stepped through amid protest.
I walked across the parking lot floor, red and blue lights hovering over the hardened canvass.
I stood in front of the storage door.
Rapped my knuckles against it. “Scott.”
Shuffling on the other side.
“Come on Scott, open up.”
He opened the door. His tie and jacket were off, his shirt unbuttoned, sweating.
There was a gun in his hand.
“Ross said I had to do it,” Scott said.
“Did you?”
I peered round the doorway.
Marcus Branchay was standing up against the wall.
Disheveled, but unharmed.
“Please tell me Erin is okay. Please tell me the bastard didn’t shoot her.”
“Erin is fine,” I answered. “She managed to get the upper-hand on Ross.”
“Oh thank God,” Scott cried.
I moved towards him, taking the outstretched pistol from his hand.
I then pressed the gun against his head and pulled the trigger.
“Fucking hell!” Marcus barked as Scott Darper dropped to the floor in a blast of blood.
“Over here,” I said pointing the gun at him. “Don’t be shy.”
“No, I don’t want to die!”
“I’m not going to kill you. My employer wants a word. Come on.”
I reached out. Took his hand.
Forced him out the door.
I moved him across the parking lot till we reached the elevators.
“Take it up to floor two, then find the fire escape and follow it back to ground,” I instructed him. “You’ll be able to get out there undetected.”
The elevator doors opened.
Agent Erin Leeds stepped out looking confused.
I shook my head in dismay.
Then shot her through the throat.
I took her by hand, leading her forward, the blood spilling out of her mouth and neck, motioning to Marcus to get into the elevator.
He complied, smashing the buttons upon entry.
I let Erin collapse to the ground as the elevator doors closed, her beautiful eyes looking up at me. Dazed.
Then she was gone.
I tucked my gun away again, then walked round to the side exit and through another segment of police tape. I pushed past the questions. The demands. The accusations.
At the end of the passageway, my superiors were waiting, all eyes on me.
“Where have you been?” Laura Kent demanded. “The press are waiting for you. Not to mention the Mayor.”
“Okay, okay,” I said. “How’s my hair then?”
“Your hair’s fine,” Matthew Feinstein answered. “You look wonderful, Rose.”
“Oh,” I said, blushing.
I knew he would say that. Those exact words.
He didn’t even have to lie.
