Christmas Passed Page 9

by Anita Klumpers

“I learned”—Mick ignored the sniffles and bright eyes around the room and faced Dinah“—that old sins can be forgiven and fresh starts made, and that my history, for thousands of years, is filled with wise women. I hope my future will be also. I discovered that religion isn’t a way to give people foolish hope.” He took his eyes from Dinah and addressed the Wagners. “I learned there is something bigger than science and logic. Someone created them. I want to learn about Him, so don’t be shocked if you can’t get hold of me some Sunday morning. I’ll probably be in church.”

Polite smiles from the Wagner clan and a proud nod from Miriam greeted this. But Dinah’s heart leapt.

Everyone left on a shower of love and holiday greetings until only Mick and Dinah were left on the front porch, admiring the glowing Christmas lights and candles in the window. Something damp touched Dinah’s cheek.

  “Oh, Mick! Snow!”

He handed her a packet. “And red mittens. To honor your haiku. Apparently, my snow order also shipped.”

  She laughed.

“Dinah, I meant what I said. I want to know God. I want to dig into my heritage and I want to understand how Christ is light and hope and everything else the world’s been anticipating. I also understand that until I know Him, you won’t be my wife.”

She stopped breathing as the snow fell more heavily.

“But until then, will you be my friend? Help me learn, study, and grow? You are the smartest person I know.”

She kissed him lightly. He tasted like Christmas. “I will.”
