LOWCOUNTRY BOOMERANG Page 23

by Susan M. Boyer

More bray-snorting ensued. “And spoil the surprise? Never in a million years.”

Then tell me about Sara Catherine. I’d forgotten all about checking in on her. I’d wanted to reassure Mamma and Daddy she was fine.

  “What about her?” Colleen asked.

Is she…okay? Is she happy with the Causbys? Does she need anything?

“Sara Catherine is well taken care of. She’s fine. I watch after her.”

You do? Why? How is she a part of your mission?

Colleen laughed again. “I can see down the road a little farther than you can. Someone has to look after things here after you’ve retired.”

Retired? In case you haven’t noticed, I’m nowhere close to retirement age.

“And she’s only three,” said Colleen. “Don’t forget to fix me a plate. Don’t skimp on the gravy now. And I want two biscuits.”

  AUTHOR’S NOTE

I’ve taken a slight liberty with time. Readers who live in Charleston County or visit frequently may notice this, so I wanted to explain. While this book will be released on September 3, 2019, the story takes place in the recent past, September 2015. This is only of note because Charleston is constantly changing. New inns and restaurants open and sometimes we lose those we love.

Because of the characters’ personal timelines, I needed Lowcountry Boomerang to be set in 2015. This is all Calista McQueen’s fault. Her story required Lowcountry Bombshell to take place in 2012, exactly fifty years after the death of Marilyn Monroe. And so the year of that book and all that come after was fixed.

That said, because readers like to know about restaurants and inns they can visit now, most of the locations in Charleston are portrayed in the book as they exist now. Cannon Street is not a one-way street any longer, though it was in 2015. The bed and breakfast, 86 Cannon, didn’t actually open until 2017, as did Brown Fox Coffee in Mt. Pleasant.

The exception to this wrinkle in time is that St. Andrews Church in Mt. Pleasant, which stood whole in 2015, was ravaged by a fire April 22, 2018, and the main ministry building is now in the process of being rebuilt. The church is written into this story as it stood in 2015.

I hope you enjoy roaming the streets of Charleston with Liz as much as I do!

  LIVING THE VIDA LOLA

  Melissa Bourbon

  A Lola Cruz Mystery (#1)

Meet Lola Cruz, a fiery full-fledged PI at Camacho and Associates. Her first big case? A missing mother who may not want to be found. And to make her already busy life even more complicated, Lola’s helping plan her cousin’s quinceañera and battling her family and their old-fashioned views on women and careers. She’s also reunited with the gorgeous Jack Callaghan, her high school crush whom she shamelessly tailed years ago and photographed doing the horizontal salsa with some other lucky girl.

Lola takes it all in stride, but when the subject of her search ends up dead, she has a lot more to worry about. Soon she finds herself wrapped up in the possibly shady practices of a tattoo parlor, local politics, and someone with serious—maybe deadly—road rage. But Lola is well-equipped to handle these challenges. She’s a black-belt in kung fu, and her body isn’t her only weapon. She’s got smarts, sass, and more tenacity than her Mexican mafioso-wannabe grandfather. A few of her famous margaritas don’t hurt, either.

  STAGING IS MURDER

  Grace Topping

  A Laura Bishop Mystery (#1)

Laura Bishop just nabbed her first decorating commission—staging a 19th-century mansion that hasn’t been updated for decades. But when a body falls from a laundry chute and lands at Laura’s feet, replacing flowered wallpaper becomes the least of her duties.

To clear her assistant of the murder and save her fledgling business, Laura’s determined to find the killer. Turns out it’s not as easy as renovating a manor home, especially with two handsome men complicating her mission: the police detective on the case and the real estate agent trying to save the manse from foreclosure.

Worse still, the meddling of a horoscope-guided friend, a determined grandmother, and the local funeral director could get them all killed before Laura props the first pillow.
