  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

WILLIAM STEVENSON, author, journalist and television producer, was born in London in 1924, grew up in England and France and served as a fighter pilot on carriers in the Royal Navy during World War II. His six previous books include: The Yellow Wind, Birds’ Nests in Their Beards, The Bushbabies, Strike Zion, Zanek! and Emperor Red. His extraordinary career includes work for THE SUNDAY TIMES of London, THE DAILY STAR and the GLOBE & MAIL of Toronto, and the Canadian Broadcasting Company. He has traveled throughout the world, holding the post of Bureau Chief for his papers in several Far Eastern countries. He has covered every major conflict since Korea—Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Congo and the Middle East—and has held exclusive interviews with many of the world’s leading statesmen. In 1954 he was one of the first four journalists to travel independently in Red China; this journey resulted in a television documentary broadcast in the United States, Canada and England. Holder of the Canadian National Press Award for Foreign Reporting, Mr. Stevenson now lives with his wife and family in Toronto.
