The Best Thing for Me Page 45

by Lauren Jackson

  My eyebrows shot up. "Sure?"

He smiled at me. He kissed me softly once more, before stepping back. "I don't want you to feel uncomfortable talking with me about stuff like that."

  "I don't," I assured him, smiling.

"Okay, good. Oh, I have a present for you..." he said to me, his hands slowly dipping so that his hands were resting on our unborn child.

"What is it?" I asked, my voice becoming high pitched.

"It's in the house..." he said slowly. "In our room."

I laughed, throwing my head back. "Okay."

"Come on, let's go." he said, gripping my hand and pulling me after him. I tripped after him, a grin plastered onto my face.

My life was just getting better and better, with every day.

  THE END

Here is a sample from another story you may enjoy:

  Prologue

My name is Hope and I am seventeen years old, turning eighteen in a few days. I live with my parents and my older brother Ricky (when he is not at college). I have a much older sister Kira, but she is married and lives a few towns over.

I would often spend time and holidays at Kira's house because my parents traveled a lot and never wanted their kids to spoil their fun.

My brother would spend time here, too. That is, when he is not at his college buddies’ place or in college.

Ricky was three years older than me and was off at college studying electronics or something.

He said he wanted to be an inventor. Ha! Yeah, right.

Kira was thirty and happily married with no children, but one on the way.

Mum and dad had Kira while in high school, that’s why there was such a big age gap.

Kira always said she wished we were around when she was growing up, because it was very lonely and it would be fun to have a sibling to hang out and play with.

I sometimes wonder why our parents even had us.

I don't think I've ever had a proper conversation with them – and by proper I mean more than four words exchanged - about anything that didn’t involve their going away or me and Ricky going to Kira's house.

And today was the day my parents were going away again and they weren't coming back for two months.

Come on. I mean, who leaves their children for two months? What a joke!

So yet again I was going to Kira's house to stay there while my parents are away.

It would have been boring and lonesome, if not for the fact that my best friend, Heather, happened to live nearby.

We have been friends since we were little kids.

Until recently she was staying at her aunts so she could go to a good school. But her parents decided that she would be better off finishing her last couple of years closer to home before she 'flew the coup', so to speak.

This was going to be the first time I would see her in several weeks, which was surprising because Heather and I haven't really spent more than a week apart since we met. Even when she went to visit her parents, she would come back after a short time to visit me. I remembered that when I was younger, I used to go to her parents a lot. But for the last few years I had been avoiding her parents’ house like a plague, especially when I knew her older brothers were there.

Heather had two older brothers and one younger.

The younger was nice enough and didn't really bother us; he spent most of his time with his friends on video games.

But her older brothers? They were a completely different story. They loved nothing but to tease and bully the two of us and make our lives a living hell. Or something like that.

Heather used to take it in jest, but I would take it more to heart. And nothing made them stop bullying me. I was grateful that the last couple of years they weren’t around since they were both away in college. And when they visited, I made sure I wasn't around.

Heather always told me that the reason her older brothers did it often was because I react and that if I didn't, they wouldn't bother with me at all. I can’t see the logic in that. I mean, can you not react when someone pours a bucket of hot sauce over your head? It was downright cruel and I wasn’t even doing anything against them. That time, I couldn't open my eyes and my skin burned. It was serious enough to warrant a visit to the hospital to get me checked up.

Their parents punished them for that, but it didn't stop them. They just became better at hiding their pranks. My brother had spoken to the two about it and for a few weeks it seemed to work and the three would hang out together. But when my brother wasn't around, they would strike. In the end, I just avoided the house when they were around. Heather would often say that they were asking for me and wondering why I didn't go around anymore, but I just ignored it.

This year would be my final year and I managed to convince my parents to let me transfer to the same school as Heather so I didn't have to take time off from school every time they went away.

I was often forced to take a long bus or car ride back and forth, which I didn't want this year.

You would think that at my age I would be ok to stay at home alone. But my parents wouldn't let their 'little baby' be alone. Oh well, at least my sister and her husband were great and I got to see Heather a lot when I'm there. Robbie, Kira's husband, was a great guy, too, and was more like an older brother or a second dad, which I loved since my own wasn't around much.

I knew this year would be different, but I didn't mind. I had met most of Heather's school friends and we got on pretty well, so I didn't have to worry so much about school. The only thing I had to worry about now was her brothers, who were returning from college.

It would be impossible to avoid them now that I was living in the same town.

  Acknowledgments

My story is a complete work of fiction which I made up myself. Everything in it, the plot, the characters and such are not real.

Firstly, I would like to thank my sister for not only telling me about the Wattpad website but encouraging me to keep going with it, in times of doubt. I am grateful to God for giving me the will to continue when I was stressed and gave me the time I needed to realise writing is really what I love to do.

I would also like to thank my parents for letting me spend hours and hours of my time doing what I love. Thank you for being there for me when I needed you.

A massive thank you to my friends, honourable mentions are Ebony, Tara and Rachelle who I told about my story (was a big deal for me to actually tell people I wrote one) who read it and encouraged me to keep going. Their support honestly means the world to me and I wouldn’t be at this stage of my writing without them.

A huge and massive thank you also goes to Le-an Lai Lacaba for being wonderfully supportive and kind through this entire publishing journey. Thank you for being understanding and being able to answer the hundreds of questions I continually fire your way. Thank you for approaching me on Wattpad and giving me this amazing opportunity. Honestly, I can’t thank you enough.

Last but not least, thank you to every single person who follows me and has either voted, commented, encouraged or critiqued my work. I would not be where I am today without you. You’re all so amazing and I will be forever grateful.

You’re all the reason I’m doing what
I am today and would love to personally thank all of you, if it were possible. You have let me grow and develop into something I completely love and this development is still taking place today.
