Into the Gray Page 59

The antagonist soldier and Tara landed behind Arian. I knew I was sunk, though I didn’t know to what degree. But if I was to be beaten, then I was darn sure going to get some answers first.

“It was not about us having the sand,” Tara said, approaching me slowly. “It was about taking it from you. We knew you were coming for Mauvrey, and our spy let us know about your plans for Mark . . . and that you were compatible with a Shadow.”

The gears in my brain finally dislodged whatever granular impairment had been blocking fluid thought. Fearfully, I understood. “You knew that if we lost a dose of sand, we’d have to get one of the Shadows out by absorbing it and . . . you wanted me to do it?”

“Surely Alex told you about how Shadows bring out the worst in people,” Arian said. “They’re designed to make you vulnerable to darkness. Nadia could think of no better way to push you from living in the gray to embracing the full depths of your Pure Magic and living in the black. But Shadows have to be invited in. Hence the elaborate measures.”

I glanced from him to Tara and swallowed hard.

“So now what?” I asked, glowering. “You guys capture me? Take me to Alderon to try and force me to lean into this Shadow’s influence? Do I get the same cell as my brother?”

Arian crouched down so he was at my eye level and looked into my soul. “Not exactly.”

  I stared at him.

“We’re going to Earth,” he said.

Tara raised a metallic glove and aimed it at me.

  END OF BOOK SEVEN

  Dear Reader,

I hope you have enjoyed Book Seven in The Crisanta Knight Series. Now here’s the thing. For a long time I have proudly stated that this is going to be an eight book series. However, I think we’ve all had an experience where a story—in literature, film, or television—had a rushed or incomplete ending that didn’t feel satisfactory.

An analogy I often use is that writing a story is like gymnastics—it doesn’t matter how high you fly, if you don’t stick the landing you don’t get the points. It is, in my opinion, not just the privilege, but the responsibility of all storytellers who put their work into the world to bring it to a close properly, and leave the audience who enjoyed and supported it feeling fulfilled.

As such, I decided in order to properly tell Crisanta Knight’s story, this series would need to be nine books.

So, surprise! The next edition in this series is not your last adventure with Crisa; you have two books left. And I promise you that they, like their predecessors, will each be more exciting and epic than the last.

See you soon and thank you for being a fan of this series.

Culbertson wishes to thank all fans, allies, and supporters of her series. At the start of this journey, before Book One was even published, her first and foremost hope was that this series would bring others the joy and inspiration her favorite series bring to her.
