Pandora planted a kiss on the aged cheek. “Happy ninetieth birthday, Grandma.”
“So, how are my three girls?”
“We’re fine. Better than fine actually. Matilda’s smiling now and sleeping through.”
The old woman patted her on the leg. “Winter is blooming. And so are you. They tell me your album has been nominated for an ARIA award.”
“Yes. And my second is due out next month.”
“So, my dear, you’ve become very successful. And good for you. What happens next?”
Pandora looked over with a smile at Winter who was proudly showing the baby to Meg. “They want me to go on tour, but I’ve refused. I’ll probably never hit the really big time if I don’t, but it doesn’t matter. I have everything I want here, the love of my life and our gorgeous daughter. Years ago it would have been important, but not now. I have no intention of jeopardising what I have.”
“Good for you.” Then a twinkle flashed in the faded eyes. “You know, Pandora, you’ve had a remarkable transformation since that first time we met. You remember…you were clinging to Jessie’s arm in that rather bold outfit, which I imagine was for Gussie’s benefit. I’ll never know why she thought you were leading the boy on. Everyone could see it was ridiculous.”
Pandora felt herself blush. “This was always the real me. The woman at the Silver Fox was just an act.”
“I like this you so much better—a woman in charge. My granddaughter is very lucky. You’re so much more suitable than her other choice.”
“Thanks, but I’m the lucky one.”
The next minute she felt Winter’s fingertips push gently on her shoulders. “Take Matilda, sweetheart, and show her to Grandma,” she said and passed over the baby.
Pandora watched silently as the old lady cuddled her closely. When Winter pulled up a chair on the other side, she reached over and took her hand. They sat there, marvelling at the grand old lady cradling the little baby in the crook of her arm and smiled at each other.
Life couldn’t get any better.
