Freedom From the Evil Dead Page 28

"My boyfriend and I have contacted the hospital several times, but neither of us speak French well. It's been difficult to reach someone who can understand us," I said.

The doctor touched my wound below my ribcage and around my naval. "This still looks irritated. Have you been limiting your movements and applying the ointment?"

"Yeah, my boyfriend cooks and has been handling everything."

A touch of gloom wormed its way inside me. Although I hadn't done much around the house, I had walked up and downstairs, helped with laundry, did some light cleaning, ventured to stores, and wandered around the ranch. I hadn't strained myself, but I did feel the tug of my flesh on occasion. As for the ointment, I'd stopped applying it after the first four days. The ointment required bandages and they always got in the way of my clothes.

Dr. Morgan straightened. "I'd like to wait another week to take out the stitches. Keep using the ointment, specifically on the area below your ribs to your belly button. And continue to wear a bandage over it if you're moving around." She removed her gloves, then tossed them in the trash.

I pushed myself upright. "Another week?" My cheerful mood declined fast. "Are you sure they can't come out now?"

"The flesh appears irritated and isn't completely healed yet. If the stitches come out now, you are susceptible to an infection. It's best to wait another week."

Although I wasn't experienced to make the kind of decisions she had made, I disagreed with her. I'd been moving around and doing things without tearing any more skin. So I wasn't one hundred percent healed. Close enough worked for me to get the damn string out. I could still take it easy without the stitches.

"Do you have any other questions or concerns?" Dr. Morgan asked as the nurse reached for the handle of the door.

Realizing I couldn't change her mind, I shook my head.

"Make sure to schedule an appointment before you leave," she said, then left with the nurse behind her.

Biting my lip, I resisted the urge to yell a curse. Another damn week with the stitches would mean Jeremy would continue to avoid me. My bright day had officially landed into the backed-up toilet.

I changed into my clothes, then stopped at the receptionist’s desk to make the next appointment. The gal gave me a reminder card, which I promptly slid into my front pocket. Shawn rose as I stepped into the waiting room. His smile normally fostered one from me, but not this time. I headed toward the exit and he followed me.

"How did it go?" he asked as we walked to the SUV.

"I have to wait another week. I'm not completely healed," I said, head lowered and tone lacking any enthusiasm.

  "Damn. That sucks."

We resumed our places in the vehicle, then Shawn started the engine. I sighed heavily and leaned my head back. Frustration continued to grow inside me.

"Well, I guess Jeremy won't be sleeping upstairs again tonight," I said, disgruntled.

Shawn drove from the lot to the main road. "You never know. He might."

I lifted my head. "Would you?"

He steered the vehicle back the way we'd come, heading for the grocery store. When he didn't respond timely, I figured out the answer.

"He's just trying to avoid stirring up…" He paused to glance at me. "He doesn't want to risk hurting you. I get that."

I understood his and Jeremy's logic. Jeremy and I had a tendency to raise each other's desires and if they got out of control… Well, we might not be able to calm them. But Jeremy could at least sleep in my bed. Couldn't he just lie next to me?

"Don't say anything to him, please," I said. "I'll tell him."

He turned into the parking lot for the store. "Just make sure you tell him. I would be pissed if my girlfriend didn’t then we had wild monkey sex and it made her injury worse."

I couldn't stop the grin from forming on my face. "Wild monkey sex?"

He pulled into a vacant spot, then withdrew the key from the ignition. "Considering how long you two have waited, I can imagine how wild things will get."

I could too. Hell, just thinking about sex with Jeremy aroused me.

As we left the car and headed into the grocery store, I thought about how and when I'd break the news to Jeremy. I was half tempted not to mention a word to him, but Shawn had made a valid point. If I didn't tell Jeremy and more stitches tore while we sated our over excited yearnings, he'd throw a huge fit. Did I really want to deal with his temper? On the other hand, I desperately wanted him beside me in bed. Maybe I could delay telling him for a day or so. Maybe we were all overreacting. My wound was nearly healed. If Jeremy and I did fool around, it was possible nothing would happen to my injury. We just had to be careful and control ourselves. It would take a great deal of effort on both our parts, but surely we could do it if we tried. Whatever decision I made, I had one goal in mind that I aimed to achieve—I was going to get Jeremy into bed with me.
