“You totally got me.” Alex laughed softly, then gave a contented sigh. “Today has been so wonderful. I’d love to stay here all night. Wake up with the dawn, see what colors the sky turns. Rustic pinks maybe? Burnt ochre?”
“Well, that would foil our plans for tonight. I’m sure your postcard declared we would make love till dawn.”
“Oh yes, quite right.” Alex bobbed her head. “Promises were made. I should probably get right on that.”
“Yes.” Sam smiled. “You should. But not this minute. I want to soak you in a little bit first. All this ambience… I’m filing it away forever.”
Alex’s fingers curled around her ribs, stroking languidly. She nibbled under Sam’s jaw, causing the hairs at the back of her neck to stand up.
Sam’s breath hitched.
“I love your body,” Alex said absently as her fingers slid up to Sam’s shoulders, then down her arm. “It’s sleek and powerful. Not just beautiful but strong. Why is it when I’m with you I feel so safe?”
Sam trailed her fingers across Alex’s cheek. “Because you know you always will be.”
“Yes.” Alex exhaled. “I felt it in New Zealand, too. The day I realized how much you meant to me. I suddenly understood how different it felt being with you. Like I was someone who was important to you, someone you needed, not just wanted.” She cupped Sam’s neck and drew her in for a kiss.
Sam’s lips were warm, yielding, and moved under hers, inviting more. Desire sparked, along with hunger, but it was infused with love. A delicious, heady combination.
Alex indulged herself for long, breathless minutes.
“You’ve always mattered to me,” Sam whispered when they pulled apart, her voice so soft that her words almost disappeared into the night. “Even when you were driving me nuts. My crazy brother was right about that.” Affection filled her tone.
“Yeah, Sid might have been onto something there,” Alex agreed with a small laugh. “I’m pretty glad he was.” Her roaming hands stilled. “I love you.”
Sam’s heart swelled at the words—so simple but containing everything that really mattered. “I know the feeling.” Her voice cracked.
For a long time, they simply held each other and watched the stars. Sam memorized Alex’s soft breathing and the steady heartbeat fluttering under her ear.
In the distance a bird called, its high-pitched tone slicing through the soothing sounds of waves somewhere far below. Sam’s arms tightened around Alex, pulling her closer.
“This is perfect.” Alex gave a contented sigh. “God, you know, this—us—is nuts given how we met, me nearly hitting you.”
“It’s funny how you keep telling everyone that’s what happened,” Sam murmured, a hint of a smile edging her lips. “But it’s not true—not to mention being a terrible ending for a story.” She lifted her head and offered Alex an arch look. “And to think you make movies for a living.”
Alex blinked. “But…that’s what happened.”
“No, it wasn’t. See, you did run me over after all.” She leaned against Alex’s ear and whispered, “And I never stood a chance.”
“Ahhh.” Amusement filled Alex’s gleaming eyes and she leaned up and placed a kiss filled with promises on Sam’s lips. “Yes,” she breathed. “Quite right. How could I forget?” She smiled. “Now that’s what I call an ending.”
