Knight of the Dead (Book 1): Knight of the Dead Page 28

by Smorynski, Ron

What's funny is that after saving them, physically not spiritually, they said they preferred their home. My wife rolled her eyes. But Benjamin looked outside the window and shrugged, saying it's a good place to defend, to build up. Who knows?

That's probably a compliment in old Jewish speak.

The girls made me find and run an electrical cord all the way from Ollie's house where the solar panels are, across the street, under cars and through the parking lot of the school and up into the window of the second floor. It took me all day just to find enough cords. That's my life right now. They wanted that, for the dvd player, watch movies, food and water, just the essentials. And that was me, rushing out, to and fro to make them happy.

Though we pretty much lost everything after The Horde, it seems their demise somehow obliterated their presence. Maybe the stench of thousands of burnt zombies did it? I saw them on the outskirts, a few blocks away, and they turned around. The area was still so charred from bodies. Many had walked or scrambled off to burn in different areas. Thank God it rained soon after or the whole place, maybe the whole city would have burned down. I did find a few weapons and my helmet in the basement. It's easy enough to get more weapons and more armor from that sword store. I'll do that soon.

I still have much to do. There's a lot of school food in the cafeteria, packaged goods. There are lots of chip and snack bags, boxes of healthy grainy crackers and things. There's a ton of water bottles and a soda machine. The girls are trying to make cheese out of all the bloated boxes of milk cartons. We'll see.

What was odd too, were the children, some of the teachers. Their dead zombie bodies were gone. Lena and Lisa gasped with some odd joy. We killed the zombie versions and now the bodies were gone. Charlotte and I had planned to burn them and then hold a memorial. But all that was left was the dirty mildewed clothes. Maybe they rotted in just a few days. Charlotte said they were taken up by Jesus. Oh yeah, the rapture. I never really go into all that. It felt like it was all too mysterious and a whole lotta conjecture. But hey... their bodies are gone. Okay... Praise Jesus! Less work for me.

But I know what we must do. It's going to be hard. The burnt zombie stench won't last long and the zombies will return to the area. Then after that, I'm sure another Horde will form. I have to find good people to bring here. I hope Christian people, but I suppose God wants me to save everyone, anyone. But then what kind of society will we have? Will I bring murderers and rapists into this place? Or will we have good people? I don't know. Are others surviving? Can anyone fight these rabid zombies? I must find people and train them to fight. It took me years to get where I am. Will others even be able?

And once I do get fighting men, will they fight the good fight or turn on me, on this place, and be my worst enemy? Will they turn into a gang or a society? I have more to fear from man than I do from the 'creatures' as Benjamin put it.

Do not fear, for I am with you, do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you. Isaiah 41:10.

The zombies turn away or avoid burnt zombies, I wonder how effective that can be? We could use that. We shall see. Signing out... Ronan.
