“I sure remember it,” Kyle told her. “I loved that book. I just didn’t realize it had the answers I needed. All this time, Miranda, and we finally found him. The man who was behind my murder and ordered yours.”

That was the truth of it, right there. They knew who actually killed Kyle, which was not meant to happen as he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. But they had never found out who ordered the hit on Miranda. It was just one of those little details that hadn’t seemed to matter before. Now she understood why Kyle couldn’t move on. He was stuck here until they found the person who had been behind him being killed.

As an enforcer for the Mob, Irving would have the pleasure of doing things like that. In her book, Miranda had written in a character in New York City who killed people the Mob needed dead. Sometimes he did it himself.

Sometimes, he had other people do it.

“You ordered a hit on me,” Miranda said plainly. “Back in Melbourne, a man named Kyle Hunter was murdered because he had been in my house when your lackey Johnny Fletcher was searching it. Your plan was to find what incriminating evidence I had against you and your bosses and then you were going to have Johnny Fletcher kill me. Poor Kyle got caught in the crossfire. You were hoping to silence the voice of the person who revealed all that information on the Mob, weren’t you?”

  “I’ll never tell,” he smirked.

Only, he didn’t have to. Miranda already knew. It was in the way he glared, and the tone of his voice, and it resonated like a shout against her psychic senses. This was the man. He’d tried to have her eliminated, and he’d been the reason Kyle was killed.

  There was something else, too.

“It must have seemed like fate when I turned up here today. I was going to be next, wasn’t I?” she asked Irving.

Jack stepped up next to her, glaring down at the man. Kyle, invisible to all but Miranda, did the same on her other side. “Now that you had me right in front of you, I was going to die, right? After you took care of Harvey and his mess, and Daphne and what she knew, I’d show up dead as well, wouldn’t I? Then you’d disappear into the wind until the Mob needed you again.”

Irving just shrugged. “Guess we’ll never know, will we?”

“Why you bastard!” Kyle shouted, dashing across the space to slam into Irving, fly through him, and out the other side, over and over. “You leave my friend alone. You leave her alone!”

Irving blinked, and coughed, and looked around him as if he’d felt something. He would never know how close to dying he had come just then. If Kyle had ever mastered the ability to move more than just a pen or a tennis ball with his ghostly essence, Irving would have become a ghost himself right then and there.

“You lost,” Miranda told him. Her chest was tight with anger. “Oh, you succeeded in killing all these people, but you lost. The Mob isn’t going to be happy with you. I’ll be surprised if you make it out of jail, whether you talk or not. I know from my book that the Mob doesn’t take kindly to failures.”

That finally got a rise out of him. His lips began to tremble, and his hands clenched into fists. “We’ll see, Miranda Wylder. I just might live a long life behind bars. And you never know. I might even get out someday. If I do, I might just pay you a visit.”

Standing in nearly the same spot together, Jack and Kyle both cocked a fist back and slammed it into Irving’s face. It made Miranda’s eyes cross to see both of her men defending her like that.

Every cop in the room stood there and watched what happened. Then the sergeant cleared his throat. “Time to take this scum out, boys. Before he really gets hurt.”

After the police left with Irving, and after the sergeant had exchanged a few words and a handshake with Jack, Veronica and Peter Ash both made their excuses and left as well. They offered to let Jack and Miranda stay here, free of charge, but Miranda had the feeling that their little getaway vacation was over. She didn’t want to be here any longer.

She knew that when the press got ahold of this there would be interviews and her publisher would be pressing her for another book, but all of that would wait. For now, the mystery was solved, and the danger was over.

Jack turned to her, pulling her into his arms. “So… yeah. This was a stupid idea.”

“It’s the thought that counts,” she laughed. “You can make it up to me back at your place.”

“Do you want to go home now?” he asked, gently kissing the top of the head.

“In a minute. There’s something that I have to do.” Miranda was openly crying now, and she couldn’t bring herself to explain to Jack what was going to happen now. She could already sense Kyle slipping away. “He’s going.”

Thankfully, she’d found the best man in the world. Instinctively, he knew what was happening. “Do what you have to. I’m going to find our luggage and then I’ll wait for you outside, and,” he added, “tell him I said thanks, for everything he did for you.”

Kyle watched Jack go after he kissed Miranda’s cheek again. “He’s a keeper,” he said.

“So you’ve told me.” She wanted so badly to hug him. “So were you, Kyle Hunter.”

“I was, wasn’t I?” He smiled, and then he passed his hand through her cheek. “I’m going to miss you, Miranda Wylder. I can feel the other side calling me. It’s… oh, Miranda, it’s so beautiful.”

“You could stay,” she suggested, knowing even as she said it that he could not. “For just a little while?”

“You know how it works, Miranda.” He looked at her sadly. “You know I couldn’t stay here forever. I feel like I’ve been waiting all this time. Like I was waiting for a bus… no, that doesn’t quite describe it. Like all of this was supposed to happen, is more like it. All of this has been leading me to this point. Is that crazy?”

Miranda shook her head. She completely understood. “Nothing is coincidence.”

“Ha,” he chuckled. “How many times have I heard you say that? I guess I only really believe it now. This is right. This is good. Where I’m going… it’s a good place.”

She knew she couldn’t keep him here. And even if she could, she wouldn’t want to. He’d earned his rest. “I love you, Kyle.”

“I love you too, Miranda.” He began to fade, and as he did, he smiled. “I will always love you, my friend.”

She stood there staring into the space his spirit had occupied long after he faded away. She would find a way to live without him constantly annoying her, and bugging her to pay attention to him. She would find a way to fill the empty hours.

After all, her life had been anything but boring up to this point. There were many more adventures to come.

Outside, through the front doors, she saw Jack waiting for her with a smile. He would be a part of whatever happened to her next. They would face whatever the future brought them.

  Together.
