I’d already decided to take a few courses on therapy, and I planned on working side-by-side with Tucker on his therapeutic riding project.
All of the clients, ranch hands, and their families were there. The barn had been decorated for the festive holiday, and small twinkling lights were scattered everywhere. It was amazing, but nowhere near as amazing as Tucker looked.
His wheelchair was out, but from time to time, he would walk a bit. His back straight, his head up, and his eyes glinting with happiness.
At one point, I saw his mother sitting in his wheelchair and trying to race one of the children down the path. I’d laughed at how far she had come. Theo had taken my advice and talked her into therapy. It was obvious that she had finally accepted Tuck’s disability.
It was time for the holiday ride, and Tuck was leading the pack. He climbed up in the saddle of Sniggers and strapped his legs in tightly. When he looked down at me, my vision wavered with emotion as he tipped his black cowboy hat back. It was the sexiest thing I had ever seen.
“Josephina Napier, if it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t be up here on my horse. I wouldn’t have found all these wonderful families to help, and I wouldn’t have found myself. I love you. You gave me my life back, and now I want to share it with you. Will you please do me the honor of being your husband?”
He held his hand out to me, and I didn’t hesitate to take it. John stepped behind me and lifted me so I could climb on behind Tucker. “Yes,” I said to him. “Yes!”
I glanced around the gathering. His mother was smiling and wiping her eyes. Marisha was there, grinning from ear to ear, and his father stood between them, an arm wrapped around each of them.
Tucker twisted the best that he could in the saddle and kissed me before he leaned down and took something from John. “Give me your hand, woman,” he said playfully, and his Texas twang was in full swing as I giggled and put my hand around his waist. He slipped a ring over my finger, and I looked at it. It was perfect.
Just like him, wheelchair or not, Tucker was perfect. To me, he would always be perfect.
