Chapter 2 Dragon Girl
‘You cannot choose the time when your destiny will unfold. You can only move towards that moment with courage in your heart.’
Berrima, Wise One of Esoncia, Second Age of Reason
Arisha sat by a pool of water, drinking deeply from her cupped hands. Her dark hair waved in the wind as her clothes were rustled by the breeze. The red tunic and armour she wore as a symbol of her duty became a deeper, darker red as the late afternoon headed towards the evening. It had been a long day’s patrol. She was grateful for the cool shadow of the trees around her after patrolling in the scorching sun.
She looked over to her dragon, Grafor, who lay curled in the tall grass, soaking up the last rays of energy of the sun. Even folded, the tips of his curved wings brushed the leaves of the trees. His long neck was curled round so that his snout rested on his legs. His sharp claws were tucked away and the spines on his neck were lowered in slumber, however, Arisha knew that at the first sign of danger he would extend them and he would be a fierce sight.
Sunlight sparkled on his red scales, scattering red and gold light around the clearing. Against the natural greens and browns, his ruby colouring made him look like a wound in the land. Such a dark thought made her uneasy. She shook her head to clear it—there was too much darkness creeping into her world and she must not contribute to it by adding her own.
As Arisha bent down to pick up another handful of water, a flash of white on the other side of the pool made her look up. She saw the shape only for a moment—its colour and outline were unmistakable. She heard a rustling in the undergrowth as it moved away, the muted sound of hooves on moss, before silence returned.
‘Freya,’ she muttered under her breath. She heard Grafor stir behind her and raise his head. ‘The time has come!’ she called to him. Within her, feelings of anxiety and hope fought for prominence. She calmed herself with her warrior’s resolve, and stood up. Grafor in an instant was beside her.
‘Come on, Grafor. Let’s go. We must find him!’ She began to walk over to Grafor, but stopped at a familiar and ominous sound. She looked up to see twenty or more dark, winged shapes soaring through the sky. They were too high to notice her or even the large red mass of Grafor, yet even from this distance Arisha could detect the leathery sound of their wings beating. She knew darkness would soon fall and it would be almost impossible to track their dark silhouettes against the night sky. Grafor saw them too, and an angry hiss of steam curled up from his nostrils. His eyes narrowed, filled with revulsion.
‘Oh, sword’s light!’ she swore. ‘How did they know before us? Quickly, Grafor – we need to find him before they do or we are all lost.’ She hurried the short distance to Grafor, who was already rising and stretching his wings. When she climbed into her saddle, Grafor beat his wings once and they were rising into the air.
