A tiny hand reached up, brushing along the feathers lining the newcomer’s arm. Olbrecht glanced down to find our littlest one smiling up at him. Black eyes met his, flushing gold in one, purple in the other. “What’s this now?” he asked, feathered brow popping up.
“You’re like me,” she told him.
“Oh, well, I suppose I am,” he said with a chuckle, spotting her wings and making a show of flapping his just for her.
“No.” Her tiny head shook. Pointing to her eye, she smiled, hugging herself to his leg as her purple iris flushed brighter. “You’re just like me.”
Olbrecht cocked his head, shrugging, staring down at her. When he looked up, I stopped dead in my tracks with a gasp.
“What?” he said uncertainly, glancing around. Lovely purple eyes blinked and he frowned in confusion. “Was it something I said?”
“Son of a Puck,” Kvigor muttered.
Olbrecht’s round eyes widened. “Beg pardon?”
“It’s not. Cannot be.” Adelric shook his head.
“Well, I certainly hope not.” A nervous laugh. The male looked to Baboroth, who was too busy ogling his woman, not even bothering to try and pay attention. “For my sake.”
“You will come with me,” Vachala told him, taking his hand and tugging until he complied.
At a loss, Olbrecht allowed her to tow him along. “Where are we going?” I heard him ask.
“Cake!” she squeaked happily.
“It can’t be,” I breathed, willing my heart to stop pounding in my chest.
“Impossible,” Kvigor agreed.
Adelric grunted, then went after the pair at a jog, ready to tag along.
“It is impossible, right?” I muttered nervously.
“Of course. Of course.” Kvigor nodded.
We shared a long, measured look, grimacing, both thinking of Vachala’s reaction to the male, and took off after them.
I supposed only time would tell...
