To Boston, With Love Page 13

“We only serve drinks up in here boo, not conversation. If you ain’t sippin’, you need to be dippin’,” Indigo replied, pulling him away from his thoughts.

“Damn, I didn’t know it was like that between us fam. Nigga get locked up and muthafuckers start acting brand new. I guess Boss got you in line with him now. I heard y’all been making some moves out here and shit.” West smirked.

“Last call! Bar is closing in ten minutes!” Bear yelled from the rear of the building.

“It’s closing time West. You drinking or nah?” Indigo asked.

“I’m good on drinks. What else you got back there? They already told me that you’re the person I need to see to get right. What you working with?” West asked her.

“Somebody obviously told you wrong. The only thing I serve up in here is drinks,” Indigo replied.

“That nigga Boss got you trained well I see.” West snickered.

“Yep, the same way he had your hoe ass sister jumping through hoops. Did she ever find her real baby daddy yet?” Indigo asked, angering him with her responses.

“It’s all good love. I’ll be seeing you again soon,” West replied as he blew her a kiss.

“I look forward to it,” Indigo said as she watched him walk out the same way he came in.

She wanted to call Boss, but a few people came up to the bar and temporarily distracted her. She was sure that Boston didn’t know that West was home but she wanted him to be on point. She didn’t know why West felt like somebody owed him something, but life didn’t stop just because he got knocked.

Indigo did her usual closing routine and cleaned up behind the bar. Bear and his girlfriend took care of everything else and they were ready to go about an hour later. Indigo had her hand inside her purse, clutching her gun as the three of them walked out of the bar together. She didn’t trust West and she wanted to always be prepared.

As soon as she got into her car, she called Boston and told him everything that West had said. Boss didn’t give a damn about how West felt about him but he felt some kind of way about him going at Indigo the way he did. Indigo assured him that she was okay but Boss wasn’t willing to let it go. Niggas like West thrived off of intimidation, and Boss didn’t fear him or any other man. West wasn’t hard to catch up with and Boss planned to pay him a visit soon. He wasn’t at the top of his priority list, so he would see him whenever time permitted.

“S hit!” Indigo hissed when she got Justice’s voicemail once again.

It was still early and she knew that he wasn’t sleep. She had just left from the hair salon, letting Shine color and cut her fresh sew-in. She felt that something was wrong with her car after a few minutes of driving and she pulled into a gas station just in time before her tire went completely flat. It was only a little after eight but she was happy to be in a well-lit place with lots of traffic. Indigo was just about to dial Justice’s number again, but he was calling her back before she did.

“What’s up baby?” Justice asked her.

“Why didn’t you answer the phone? I’m at the gas station but I have a flat,” Indigo replied.

“Aww shit. Damn baby. I got called into work and I just made it here,” Justice replied.

“Wow. When were you gonna call and tell me that?” Indigo replied.

“I’m sorry love. One of the machines had to be repaired and it put us behind schedule. You know we have deadlines to meet that we can’t miss,” Justice noted.

“Can you tell them that you’re gonna be a few minutes late?” Indigo asked.

“I can’t baby. I already told them that I was on my way. I can call my brother to come help you,” Justice offered. One of his brothers relocated to Florida near their parents and the other one lived about thirty minutes away. Justice knew that he wouldn’t mind helping Indigo out because he would do the same for his wife.

“That won’t do me any good Justice. The spare tire is on the patio at home,” Indigo reminded him.

“You see, that’s exactly why I told you not to take it out to make room for no damn hair. That didn’t make any sense,” Justice fussed.

“Fuck you, Justice. I’ll call my daddy. At least I know he won’t let me down. That’s about the only man in my life that I can depend on anyway,” Indigo fumed before hanging up on him. She wanted to say her father and Boston but that would have hurt his feelings if she did.

She dialed her father’s number, but he didn’t answer. Indigo was annoyed but she wasn’t about to stress herself out. Since she was closer to Boston’s apartment, she decided to take a chance and drive her car over there. She didn’t want to leave her car unattended all night and have someone break in it. Her trunk was filled with the new shipment of hair that she’d just gotten and that was a risk that she wasn’t willing to take.

Indigo put her emergency lights on and slowly made the drive to her best friend’s house. When she pulled up, she spotted Boston’s and Lacey’s cars out front, so she parked her car right behind his. Boston still hadn’t taken the advice of the therapist and slept alone, but there was no rush. He had gone to his second session without Indigo and had even scheduled a third. He seemed to be coming around to the idea of seeking help and she was proud of him. Indigo didn’t want to bother him but she wanted to let him know why her car was parked there in case he wondered about it. She was about to catch an Uber home but she called him before she ordered it.

“What’s up Indie?” Boss asked when he answered the phone.

“My car is on a flat. I was at the gas station not too far from your house and I didn’t want to leave it there. I drove it here and parked it behind your car,” Indigo rambled in disgust. She wasn’t mad with Boston but she was in a foul mood.

  “Where are you?” Boston asked.

“I’m about to go home and smoke until I pass the fuck out,” Indigo sighed.

“Are you still outside?” Boston asked.

“Yeah, but I’m good,” Indigo replied. As soon as the words left her mouth, she heard Boston’s front door open.

“The fuck you mean you’re alright. Why didn’t you call me Indigo?” Boss asked her.

“Because…” she said before she erupted in tears.

“The fuck. What happened baby? Huh? Talk to me Indie. What’s wrong?” Boss asked her.

“Everything is wrong,” Indigo replied as he led her into his house.

“Oh my God. What’s wrong Indigo?” Lacey asked as she jumped up from the sofa. Indigo was one of the strongest women that she knew. She had never seen her shed a tear or even get upset. She seemed to always have her shit together.

“Shit, I’m sorry y’all. I didn’t mean to come here with my bullshit. I just had a bad day,” Indigo replied as she wiped her eyes.

She was aggravated with Justice and her entire relationship. It wasn’t the time or the place to discuss it, so she decided to keep it to herself. Boston looked at her skeptically because he knew that she was lying. She didn’t want to get into the habit of talking down on Justice to him. That was some lame shit that she didn’t want to start.

“Why the fuck are you riding around with a flat tire? Where is Justice?” he asked.

“At work, where else?” Indigo replied with a roll of her eyes.

“Do you want something to drink Indigo? I got some wine,” Lacey offered. She was on her second bottle and she had lots more.

“No, I’m okay. I’m about to get going,” Indigo replied.

“Nah, you can’t go nowhere with a flat tire. You can stay in the spare bedroom tonight,” Boss said.

“I’m good Boston. Besides, I don’t even have any changing clothes. I just want a hot shower and my bed,” Indigo replied as he gave her an angry stare.

“Let me talk to you for a minute,” Boss said as he walked off towards the back of the house. Indigo waited for a few seconds before she got up and followed behind him. She noticed the way Lacey shifted uncomfortably on the sofa and she wished that Boston wouldn’t have done what he did.

p; “What’s up?” Indigo asked when she walked into the room. “And before you ask again, my answer is no. I’m not staying the night.”

“I wasn’t asking. You’re staying here tonight. That nigga Justice is about to be hearing from me soon,” Boston fumed.

“Whatever happened to you playing your position?” Indigo questioned.

“Fuck that Indie! This ain’t got shit to do with what we got going on. I’m still your best friend, even if we are fucking. That nigga ain’t handling his business with you and I don’t appreciate that shit,” Boss whispered harshly.

“I knew that I shouldn’t have come here,” Indigo replied as she tried to walk away.

“I’m sorry baby, but you already know how I am about you, Indigo. I don’t hate on Justice or no other nigga but he needs to step his game up,” Boss said as he pulled her back and hugged her.

  “I know,” Indigo agreed.

“Just stay here tonight and we’ll get your car taken care of in the morning. I’ll give you something to sleep in,” Boss said.

“Okay,” Indigo replied, right as her phone rang. It was Justice calling her back. She had already declined four of his calls and she declined that one too.

  “Damn man,” Boss sighed.

“What’s wrong?” Indigo asked as she used her thumb to trace his full, sexy lips.

“I want her ass gone now,” Boss replied.

“Boston, no, just stop. You must be trying to give us away,” Indigo said while shaking her head.

“I said that I would respect what you got going on with Justice, but she ain’t my girl. I don’t owe her a muthafucking thing. And make no mistake about it. I’m only cool with your situation because I fucked things up between us. It’s not fair for me to come in between what you have just because it’s convenient for me,” Boston noted, right as his phone rang.

“What?” Indigo asked when she saw the frown that appeared on his face.

“What’s good Justice?” Boss countered, answering his phone and her question. She listened as Boss talked to Justice for a minute before he gave her a soft kiss on the lips and handed her the phone. He walked out of the room and gave her some privacy.

“Yes,” Indigo snapped when she got onto the phone.

“Why aren’t you answering your phone? I called you like six times,” Justice said.

“For what? You’re at work and you said all that I needed to hear,” Indigo replied.

“I’m sorry baby, but I’m coming to get your car right now. I’m about to make sure they’re straight and I should be leaving here in about an hour. I’m gonna stop home to get the tire first and then I’ll be there to get you.”

“Wow, I finally come first,” Indigo said sarcastically.

“Don’t do that Indigo. You always come first. We’ll talk later baby. I’m gonna hurry up and finish here, so I can get to you as soon as possible,” Justice replied.

“Okay,” Indigo said before she hung up and went to give Boston back his phone.

  “What’s up?” Boss asked.

“He’s coming to fix it,” Indigo replied. She saw a look of disappointment flash across his face but it went away as quickly as it came.

“Do you want a glass of wine Indigo?” Lacey offered again.

“Nah, I need something to smoke,” Indigo replied.

“I’m all out of cigars. Do you have some?” Boss asked.

  “Nope,” she replied.

“I’ll run to the store right quick,” he said while standing to his feet. He had to move her car from behind his before he left to go to the same gas station that Indigo had just left from.

“Are you okay Indigo?” Lacey asked once they were alone.

“Yeah, I’m good. I’ll be better once his ass comes to fix my car,” Indigo replied.

“Does he ever have a problem with this?” Lacey asked.

“Does who have a problem with what?” Indigo inquired.

“Your boyfriend. Does he ever have a problem with you and Boston’s friendship?” Lacey wanted to know.

“No. Why should he?” Indigo countered.

“No reason. I was just asking.” Lacey shrugged.

“Do you have a problem with it?” Indigo asked.

“Honestly, I used to. I mean, you and Boston are closer than close. Not to mention the rumors that I’m always hearing,” Lacey replied.

“Truthfully Lacey, I really don’t care how you or Justice feels about my friendship with Boston. This has been going on since before any of you entered the picture and that will never change,” Indigo said honestly.

“I wasn’t trying to offend you or nothing Indigo. I was just being honest,” Lacey replied.

  “So was I,” Indigo noted.

She ended up drinking a glass of wine with Lacey as they made small talk. Lacey was happy that they’d had the conversation because she’d been wanting to let Indigo know how she felt. Maybe they didn’t notice it, but Indigo and Boston had a way of making people feel like outsiders when they were together. That was exactly how she felt and she’d always wondered if Justice felt that way too. Lacey had met him a few times before and he seemed like a cool, laid back dude. After a while, all the wine that Lacey consumed had her dozing off on Boston’s sofa. He hadn’t come back from the store yet but she couldn’t keep her eyes open any longer. Indigo was on the phone with her man when Lacey drifted off to sleep.

About an hour later, Lacey woke up to find that she was now in the living room alone. She went to Boston’s bedroom in search of him but he wasn’t there. She went to the back door where his patio was to see if he was out there smoking. Boston’s patio was private and he only kept one chair back there for himself. Lacey was shocked to see Indigo sitting back there smoking but she was by herself. She searched the spare bedroom and bathroom before she looked outside to see if his car was there. Boston’s car was parked in its usual spot, but she was surprised to see Indigo’s boyfriend out there fixing her flat tire.

“Hey. Do you want me to get Indigo for you?” Lacey asked him when she stepped outside.

“Nah, I didn’t even tell her that I was out here. I’m not done yet,” Justice replied.

“Have you seen Boston?” Lacey asked.

“No. His car is here. He’s not inside?” Justice inquired.

“I just woke up and didn’t see him,” Lacey replied.

“Aye, don’t you work at a hotel?” Justice asked her.

He still wanted to propose to Indigo since it didn’t work out like he wanted it to the first time. He was hoping that Lacey could help him out and plan something romantic at the hotel where she worked. She and Indigo appeared to be cool and he was sure that she wouldn’t mind.

“Yep, one of the best,” Lacey replied.

“I might need your help with a room. I’m trying to be on my romantic shit,” Justice joked.

“I got you. Lock my number in,” Lacey said as she called it out to him.

She didn’t know where Boston was but she was sure that Indigo did. Lacey went back into the room to put her shoes on before heading down the hall to go outside. She heard voices when she got to the door and one of them clearly belonged to Boston. She discreetly looked out of the window but she still didn’t see him.

“Stop,” Indigo giggled as she threw her head back and bit her bottom lip.

“Well, stop running from me,” Boston replied, as Lacey looked on in confusion. She heard him but she still didn’t see him. That was until he stood up from in between Indigo’s legs.

“The fuck!” Lacey shrieked in surprise.

Her hand flew to her mouth in shock at what she’d just witnessed. She couldn’t believe it. She didn’t want to believe that what her sister and Ari had been saying all along was true. She felt like a fool for ignoring all the signs that were right there in her face. Her mind wandered back to the week they spent in Miami and it all made sense to her now. Boston hadn’t slept in the room with her once since they got there and now she knew why. He didn’t know a
nybody in Miami. He was laid up with Indigo. That bitch was the one who invited her, only to turn around and fuck her man while they were there. Boston hadn’t touched her since they returned, so he was obviously still fucking her.

Lacey was tempted to go get Justice and let him see what was going on for himself. The thought of losing Boston for good had her rethinking making such a stupid decision. He was a no good, dog ass nigga but she couldn’t help that she was in love with him. Lacey’s eyes filled with tears as she watched Boston plant a kiss on Indigo’s lips. She felt sick to her stomach and she couldn’t take it anymore. Lacey rushed back to the bedroom just in time because they came into the house a short time later.

“You love me?” Boston asked as he and Indigo headed out front. Justice called and said that her car was fixed, so Indigo was about to go home.

“Yes and stop asking questions that you already know the answer to,” Indigo said.

“I love you too, baby. I love your whole fucking life,” Boston replied.

Lacey heard the entire exchange and she wanted to open the door and swing on them both. Her sister’s warnings played over and over in her head like a record on repeat. She would go to her grave before she gave Lane a chance to throw that shit back in her face. Not only that, but she knew that her sister would be all too happy to run back and tell Ari. Lacey wasn’t a killer but, at that moment, she wanted Indigo dead. Of all the bitches that he could have been with, he chose the one who knew him better than anyone else. Their chemistry was like nothing that she’d ever seen before. She knew without a doubt that he would make Indigo his one and only if Justice wasn’t in the picture. He was always saying stuff about the one who got away and Lacey had a feeling that’s who he was referring to.

“Don’t forget Boston, we’re signing up for GED classes next week,” Indigo said before she opened the front door to go outside.

“Yeah, I know. Damn man. You don’t let a nigga get over one thing before you hit him with another,” Boss argued.

  “You promised,” Indigo whined.
