“Isn’t it bad luck for him to see you?” My Dad asks by way of greeting.
“Dad!” I rush across the room to hug him. Well, it’s more like a very quick waddle.
“I knew you’d come,” I say into his shirt. From my vantage point, I can see Cole roll his eyes at me.
“I wasn’t sure I would, princess. This is still a lot. I think it’s too fast, but that’s your decision to make, and I’ve come to terms with it.”
I smile up at him.
“Does that mean you’ll give me away?” I ask, blinking back tears.
“Of course it does, Cassie. I wouldn’t miss it for the world.” He reaches out a hand towards my stomach, then stops himself.
“May I?” he asks. I nod, and he places his hand on the growing life inside of me.
“I’m really going to be a grandfather,” he sounds a little awed.
“Cole sounded just like that when I told him,” I say with an encouraging smile. It’s clumsy, I know, but trying to get my guys to make up is the only thing left for me to worry about.
“Damn straight I did,” Cole chuckles. “I’ve seen how many grey hairs being a father has given Dave. I’m going to be joining him, I’m certain.”
“Only if it’s a girl, bud. Boys are half the trouble.” My Dad jokes.
I smile wide, the tears overflowing.
“Oh, this day couldn’t get any more perfect.”
“I can think of one way. Let’s go get married, Cass.”
“But the ceremony isn’t supposed to start for another half hour, Cole.”
“Well, the sooner we get it started the better. I’m tired of not being married to you.”
My Dad smiles at me, giving me his arm. “Come on, kiddo. Let’s go get in position. I know that tone of voice. He’s got his rock hard head made up about something.”
Cole nods. “Only that I love your daughter, Dave.”
“It’s still odd, but I can make peace with it if you make her happy.”
“He does, Dad. He really does.”
“Alright, then. Let’s go get this show on the road.” My Dad says as Cole takes my other arm.
Between my two men and with a third growing inside of me.
I couldn’t be any happier.
Epilogue Two - Cole
One Year Later
An angry wife is not a good start to your birthday.
“Cole Watson, do you know what your son has been doing?” Cassidy hisses at me as I crawl back into bed from going to the bathroom.
I blink at her sleepily.
“Is this a trick question? He’s a baby. I assume he’s doing baby things?” I ask, sleep hanging off my words.
Sleep, I’ve learned, is a precious commodity with a baby in the picture.
“He’s teething.” She says with the same tone she’d use to describe someone committing murder.
“He’s a baby? They do that, right?” I ask.
“You’re only saying that so calmly because you don’t have to spend hours with your nipples in his mouth.” She answers in a huff.
“Ah. Well, I’ll have a talk with him.” I reply, burrowing back into the blankets, wrapping my arms around her.
“I’m serious, Cole.”
“I am too. As soon as he’s up, we’ll go for a walk. It’ll give you a chance to rest your nipples. From both of us.” I say, sliding a palm up to heft her heavy breast.
I avoid tweaking her nipple, though. I know where the line is, and I don’t cross it.
“That sounds nice, actually.” She presses herself back against me, giving my hand on her tit a squeeze.
It isn’t much longer before little Caleb wakes us both up, but I push Cassidy back into the bed and go to handle my son.
After a bottle, Caleb is happy and quiet, so I bundle him up and true to my word, take him out for a walk.
The lake stretches out around us, quiet except for the occasional hoot of a waterfowl or the croak of a frog. A gentle mist obscures the very surface of the water, sunlight only barely beginning to dissipate it.
Caleb is well-behaved when it’s just him and me. I have a sneaking suspicion that he just likes driving his mother crazy.
Like father, like son.
“Well, Caleb David, do you want to go for a walk?”
He looks up at me with the innocent guile that only a baby can possess.
“I’ll take that as a yes.”
I carry him in one arm, walking stick in the other, and begin the long circuit around the lake. I think back on the amazing year that I’ve had: finding love, getting married, having my first son. All thanks to being in the right place at the right time.
“Life can be hard, Caleb. I’m your father, but I’ll never sugarcoat it. Life can seem to be a series of one bad thing after another. Getting sick, bills piling up, the stress of balancing work and life.”
Caleb listens attentively. He’s the best conversational partner I’ve ever had. A truly captive audience.
“But it can also be full of sweet moments like this. Walking around the most beautiful lake in the world with my son. Enjoying the early morning peace and quiet in solitude.”
Caleb nods along. He looks like he’s getting a little sleepy. I smile at him, giving him a kiss on the forehead.
“Life can be full of strange things. Sometimes you fall in love with your best friend’s daughter. Sometimes strangers fall in love at first sight. Strange and wonderful things will happen to you too, my son. But no matter what happens, I’ll always be there for you.”
Caleb doesn’t seem to have an opinion on this, but that’s ok.
“Alright, Caleb. Now, since it’s my birthday, I want you to do me a favor. It can be your first present to me, ok? Give your mom a break. You’re driving her nuts. I know it’s fun, but not today, alright little man?”
Caleb doesn’t agree right away, because he’s my son and he knows that if he holds out I’ll sweeten the deal.
He’s right, of course.
“Alright, I’ll let you stay up and watch the fireworks for being such a good negotiator, alright?”
Caleb burbles. I shake one tiny hand with one of my fingers.
“It’s a deal.”
One year ago, my life changed completely for the better. I can’t help but smile as I walk back to the house that Cassidy now owns half of with me.
Life couldn’t be sweeter.
