Out of the Sky
Captain Tatia Lia slammed into the straps of her chair. Alarm bells screamed from every corner of the cockpit as the Largo was forced from Light Space. The whirling lights beyond the glass jarred into the pinpricks of shining stars in the outer galaxies, the whole ship shuddering with the unexpected return to real space.
Tatia brushed some of her scarlet hair back from her face. Her expansive chest heaved, barely contained in the slim flight suit pressing against her pale flesh. It was all she wore save the grey flight jacket and a pair of gold earrings. “What the hell was that!”
“Gravity mine!” Steff, her engineer cried. The young man was frantically working the translucent screens radiating from the consoles. A holographic lens flickered before his freckled face as his fingers danced. “We’ve been pulled out of Light Space.”
“I see a ship!” Bia, her girlish helmsman, shouted from the opposite side of the bridge.
Tatia unbuckled her straps with a wince and rose. She stood a good six feet tall, towering over her slender helmsman as she passed her by. Her long legs moved fluidly beneath the taut glossy fabric of her suit. The pistol holstered at her side swayed with the aggressive roll of her hips as she crossed the floor. She stopped beside Steff, who glanced grimly back from the broad monitor projecting from the flat panel.
“It’s the Vulkrin.”
Tatia cursed. “Valith.” She turned sharply to Steff. “Get the engines running again! Now! We don’t have the firepower to take him. Quickly! And someone shut off those damn sirens!”
The blaring shriek and strobing lights vanished so quickly it was almost a shock.
Steff looked up again. “We’re being hailed.”
Tatia swore. She felt Steff and Bia’s frightened eyes on her and she looked grimly to the wide screen which consumed an entire wall. “Put it up.”
The screen flickered, then resolved. It showed a dark bridge of blinking crimson lights tended by savage looking men. A command chair took shape, and on it, a man Tatia would have been happy to never see again. He wore dark armour pitted and scarred by knife and laser shots. His face showed much the same abuses suffered. Craggy and harsh, his small eyes gleamed from beneath a heavy brow.
He was not alone. Draped about the throne were near a half dozen pretty young women. Utterly naked, their skin flawless and fair, they clung about the throne, bound to it by slender chains attached to black collars about their necks. One was pressed against the pirate lord, the blonde haired woman wearing a look of vague bliss that spoke of numbing drugs to make her more compliant. Or perhaps a mental suppressor Tatia thought with a glance at the girl’s collars.
“Tatia,” Valith said. His voice was like him, deep and thick, with the hard tone of men of influence and power and a penchant for cruelty. “I was thinking you weren’t going to show.”
“You were waiting,” she said grimly.
The pirate laughed throatily. “Surprised? Don’t be. Money can buy many eyes. Some even in the ranks of the cartographers.”
Tatia scowled. “What do you want?”
Valith’s smile turned dangerous and cruel. “What do you think?” he snarled. The blonde in his grasp gasped as he tightened his hold. She pressed herself more wantonly against her master’s side, rubbing her naked flesh against the dark metal of his armour, moaning. “I want your cargo Tatia. And you as a bonus. You’ve given me the slip before but not this time. That gravity mine knocked out your long range engines. I have you. Your crew will fetch a high price at the flesh markets. But you.” He grinned, showing his teeth. He squeezed the busty slut in his grasp more tightly, making her gasp. “I’ll be keeping you. Personally.”
Tatia couldn’t supress a shudder at the thought. Her eyes went to the women who crawled at the pirate’s feet. Two had begun to kiss, embracing in the throes of Sapphic lust, fingering one another wantonly before the screen.
Valith laughed. “I suggest surrender, Tatia. This is your only chance.”
“Fuck you!” Tatia snarled. She slammed a fist down on the comm controls, severing the connection.
“The Vulkrin is coming about!” Bia said, her voice and petite frame shaking as she stared at her monitors.
Tatia whirled back to Steff. “Can you get the Light Engine online?”
He shook his head. “I need time captain!”
“Then we’ll buy it,” Tatia said. She returned to her chair, strapping herself in once more. “What’s the nearest planet?”
Steff’s fingers flashed across the keyboard. “There’s an orbiting system not far. Three moons around a single planetoid. Called Lanaar. But…oh…Nevermind…”
“What?” Tatia tapped a code into her personal keypad. A holo projector in the chair brought up Steff’s screen showing a single world. Her eyes flashed across the specifics. Breathable air according to the explorer’s maps. Fertile jungle and a single massive ocean. “Looks fine. Perfect even.”
Steff shook his head quickly. “But captain! Look! It’s not on the Faring Guild’s maps. The read from it is only local and marking it out as Hazardous level seven. It’s Blacked Out!”
“The Largo can make it,” Tatia said firmly.
“But captain-“
“It’s that,” she said sharply. “Or be taken by Valith. And I have no intention of having a sado collar on and licking his shoes while you both are sold to some splicer on the flesh market.”
Steff and Bia cringed.
Tatia set her face and leaned back into her chair. “Take us in.”
Steff nodded shallowly. “Aye, captain.”
The craft shook as he activated the main engines. The small cargo ship turned, making a beeline for the looming planetoid. Lanaar, Tatia thought, watching as the planet hove into view. A vast world, green stripes of jungle cut by heavy clouds. Three moons orbited it, hovering on the horizon. Tatia gripped the arms of her chair. Despite her bluster, she was worried. There was something about it. Something worrying…
She shook her head. She knew the risks. The Ring World authorities reserved a Black Out only for worlds beyond dangerous. Labelled illegal to even be in the vicinity of. If they were caught, it was a death sentence. Assuming whatever it was that made the planet so dangerous didn’t get them first.
But Tatia would be damned if Valith took her ship! Took her! She’d sooner see it broken on the surface of the world below.
“The Vulkrin is coming about,” Steff said. Grim faced, the young man concentrated on the screens before him. The light of his screens glowed red as his fingers danced across the keys. Tatia herself looked at the approaching planet. If nothing else, she swore she’d save her crew.
One way or another.
A sudden shudder rocked the decks. “He’s firing on us!” Bia cried. “He’s sees what we’re doing! He’s trying to knock out our engines!”
“The hell he will! Controls to my chair!” Tatia barked.
Bia swept her hand over her console gratefully and hastily strapped in. She had signed on for freighter runs and her skills reflected it. She had no business piloting under fire.
But Tatia was of the old school. She had earned her spurs blazing in the United Navy, fighting Drax and the like. The moment the joysticks rose from the arms of her chair she gri
pped them tightly and pulled. The ship rocked, dodging yet another salvo of screaming missiles. Over armed and engine, Tatia thought wryly. Vallith. Always compensating.
Still, her ship handled like a wooden tub steered with a paddle up its ass. Narrowly she evaded a las salvo that cut a crimson lash across the horizon. Lanaar rose in the view screen, filling it with swirling whites and blanketing greens. They were close enough to see the lightning crackle through the clouds of a storm swirling slowly about the virgin world. “Brace yourselves!” she cried, heaved on the controls, and plunged into the rolling storm.
Instantly the screens were washed in sleety grey. Tatia grit her teeth, watching the jolts of lightning spit across her viewports. Feeling the sudden gravitational pull. She banked.
A red flash sped by them, searing a gash through the clouds.
“He’s right behind us!” Steff shouted.
“Nooo!” Bia moaned.
Tatia grit her teeth, forcing their little craft about. A spear of lightning blazed before them, arching through the clouds like grasping fingers. The ship shuddered. Alarms started to scream again and washed the cabin in warning red.
Another explosion rocked their craft. Tatia yanked on the stick, the narrow nose of the Largo quivering as she forced it up. “Give me a boost on the engines on my mark Steff!”
“Captain-“
“Wait for my word!” she snapped, brow furrowed, hunched in her chair as she waited for her chance. Her heart hammered in her chest. Her palms were slick with sweat and her body quivered with adrenaline. She was acutely aware of the tightness of her synth suit. Of the g-forces pressing against her.
A shadow moved through the clouds.
“Now!”
Steff moved his hands across his station.
The Largo whirred, frame shaking as it suddenly accelerated. They shot through the clouds. There was a sudden darkness. A shape of corroded black steel and bristling spikes. The Vulkrin sped by beneath them like a steel shark bristling with spines. The ponderous pirate ship, agile in space, was weighed down in the atmosphere of Lanaar. It struggled to turn and follow them.
Tatia grinned, turning about, and opened up. Las fire stitched the rear of the Vulkrin, flashing over shields before finding the engines. She hammered them, squeezing the trigger, sending pulse after pulse against the blazing ports. The engines crackled, the shields failed. Explosions rocked the fat pirate ship. It wheeled, and fell, trailing smoke while the storm lashed it vengefully with bolts.
“We did it!” Bia cried.
Tatia didn’t bother to correct her. She merely exhaled, releasing her death grip on the controls. She sank into her seat with a sigh, then frowned. Because somehow she knew that had been the easy part.
“Find a spot to set down,” she told her crew, glancing at the red warnings spilling down her screens. “Let’s check the damage.”
Sobered by her tone, Steff nodded and returned to work. Bia bit her lip, taking over piloting the ship again. In her chair, Tatia sighed wearily as they came out from the cloud cover and began their descent.
Landing
From the top of her ship Tatia surveyed the jungle of Lanaar. Swathes of green and multicoloured flowers swayed in a gentle wind. Vines choked the curving trunks of trees and thick leaves shaded the ground. A riot. Untamed, savage as any feral world. She didn’t like it. Jungle worlds always held wild dangers. And a world with the warning signs they’d seen had more than she would like to know.
They’d landed in a small clearing in the jungle, not far from where the pirates had crashed. They hadn’t dared go to near. If one of the hulking ship’s turrets were still working, they could shoot the slim Largo out of the sky for sure. And wouldn’t that be a fine thing Tatia thought sourly. Survive the battle just to get shot down by the corpse. But they’d confirmed the Vulkrin was down, and unlikely to get back up again.
She hopped down off the roof, landing lightly on the ground. A banging came from the open engines on the side of the ship. “How bad is it?” she asked.
Steff’s head poked from the depths of the machinery, his cheeks smudged with oil and hair tangled. His holographic eyepiece was covered in the spidery scrawl of diagnostic data. “Not too bad captain. I should be able to fix the engines, but the Drive Core’s been cracked...We won’t be going anywhere outside the system until we get that fixed.”
Servos whirred as the ship’s cargo bay opened, the curving ramp lowering gingerly to the ground. A moment later Bia came out walking the hovering, sleek shape of a speeder gliding on a cushion of antigrav field. The girl eased it across the ground and brought it to a halt before Tatia. “Here captain. It’s all fueled up and ready.”
Tatia gave a brief nod of thanks and slung a pulse rifle over her shoulder. The bulk of the weapon formed a reassuring weight before the dark jungles looming around them. She touched the speeder, an ache of nostalgia passing through her as she examined its faded paint. A relic of her time in the navy, as was the rifle. Despite the desperation of her situation, she found a small smile.
“Are you sure this is a good idea?”
Bia’s words brought her back to the present. She nodded, once and curtly, before climbing aboard the speeder. The bike bobbed as it adjusted to her weight, the humming of its grav engine wavering before steadying itself after a moment. “We don’t have a choice. That ass Valith burned out our Drive Core when he knocked us out. We’ll be torn apart the second we try to enter Light Space as we are. Our only chance for getting off this rock is if his is still intact. While I’m gone, Bia? Set our course for a jump back to SS9. Steff? You get the engine working. I don’t want to spend a second longer than we have to on this rock.”
Steff nodded. “Right.”
“But what if the pirates survived the crash?” Bia asked.
Tatia shrugged the rifle more securely over her shoulder. “Then I’ll take care of it.”
“Be careful captain.”
Tatia found a reassuring smile. Careful. A laugh. She was going to cross an unknown world registered at the highest threat level possible. All to raid the ship of the most notorious pirate lord in the sector. And she was going to do it all alone.
But she was practical. And what choice did she have? She shook the thought from her head and leaned forward to grasp the handles of the speeder. “Keep close to the ship. Be careful, and watch out for each other. I’ll be back as soon as I can.”
Steff nodded sternly, stepping protectively closer to Bia. The girl caught the motion, smiling shyly.
Tatia gripped handlebars and turned them. The engine hummed to life, and she sped away into the tangled knots of the jungle.
Bia and the Lure
Bia kicked her feet dangling off the edge of the boarding ramp. Hunched forward, chin in her hands, she stared morosely at the jungle. With Tatia gone and Steff banging away at the engines, she had little to do. She’d already set the nav computer, and thus was feeling quite bored.
And warm. She sighed, unzipping the top of her zipsuit down to her navel. The deep V showed the soft pink of her skin and the modest curves of her breasts. Bia was a deck rat. Children born to spacer parents in the depths of zero g’s. The light buoyancy of artificial gravity had meant she would always have a petite, modest frame. An elfin prettiness that she did not necessarily regret, but that, compared to her busty captain, she felt a little self-conscious of.
She breathed in deeply and sighed and watched the jungle. The draping vines and heavy fronds threw a deep darkness that the strange green luminous light shone through. It reminded her a little of the more illicit clubs on some of the fringe stations she’d been to. Where women and men would dance beneath the thudding electronic music. Each clothed in only bands of holographic light or clinging synth silk. A shimmering sea of shifting colours. The heavy thump of the music. The grinding. The scent of sweat and sex. The gasping and groaning…
Bia blinked and raised her chin a little, peering into the darkness. The lights seemed to be moving. She watch
ed the shifting colours, her breathing slowing. Relaxing. She smiled a little as she watched the fluctuating motes of purples and blues. How they twirled and spun. Slow and sensuous…
She felt the ground beneath her feet as she hopped off the loading ramp. The lights filled her thoughts. The slow, luxurious dance as they spun and shifted. Weaving patterns in the dark. Receding before her eyes. No. Don’t go…
The distant clang of Steff’s work on the engines faded behind her. The cool shadows of the jungle fell over her. Distractedly, she pushed aside the thick fronds and vines which barred her path, letting them spring back in her wake as if she’d never passed.
The colours drew her on. Their strange swaying dance transfixed her. Motes of luminous lights compelling her deeper into the darkness of the jungle’s undergrowth. Somewhere distant, an animal called out.
She stepped into a clearing, and before her was the source. It was everything she imagined it could be. Looping tentacles writhed and shifted, the luminous globes of lights strung along its limbs and the flashy stalks dangling about its head. Its body filled a space before her. Utterly alien. A thick hide draped its back like a cloak, its torso strangely man-like and flat. Stalks rose from its back, swaying and shifting in their strange hypnotic dance of purples and blues. Its digitrade legs were widely splayed. Its head was angular, wedge shapes and flowing into the carapace back, sloping forward with four glowing eyes of light. It opened its jaw, a long tongue sliding out and caressing Bia’s cheek.
She sighed, watching the shifting lightshow of its body. Its tentacles reached forward, gently gathering her up. Sliding against the strange fabric of her skin tight zip suit. Its limbs seemed to surround her, pulling her deeper. There was only it. Only the lights it displayed for her alone.
Its limbs slid down the open front of her suit and she gasped, stiffening as it reached down the front of her pants and found her moistening cunt.
