A Deadly Summer Day

I scoffed. It was too late now. My mind was stained for life. There was nothing I could do to make this right. I couldn’t knock the images loose from my head. My mind deteriorated, leaving a storm to linger over me with bloody rain drops and horrified shrieking thunder. No matter how much I tried, I couldn’t paint my mind with colorful dreams and hopes of success. It was gone and it would take more than a miracle from the Almighty himself to wipe my mind clean.
I walked all night until I ended up downtown, standing in front of the precinct. I peered up the steps at the double doors. Cops nodded at me as they rushed in and out with hot coffee.
This could end me. I knew it. But if Danny or Uncle Pauly didn’t, my walking nightmares would.
I pulled my phone from my pocket and searched for Ant’s number. His name blurred behind my tears. I sucked down a sob and dialed before pressing it to my ear.
“What’s up, man?” Ant garbled into the phone over music and chattering people.
“Hey, Ant,” I blubbered.
“What’s up? You all right?” It grew quiet on his end.
My throat swelled as I peered to the fading night sky. “You sitting down?”
“Yeah.”
I climbed the steps. “I—uh. I gotta tell you about my night.”
