  Chapter 8

It took some time and persuasion on my part, but eventually the two deities became seven: three ‘good,’ three ‘evil,’ and one neutral. I had all gathered before me, as I did not want to make this deal more than once, nor did I want the deities to meddle in my affairs either on this planet or on subsequent planets, knowing each deity was effectively stuck on this planet until their followers would be able to establish a new place of worship on foreign soil.

To that end I will offer a trade and ongoing quest. Each deity has agreed to submit one of their followers for training in becoming a portalist. This was done under the pretense that I would always remain neutral, neither spreading these deities’ beliefs to another planet, nor would I spread other deities’ ideals and objectives here. I would merely open up training so that the followers of these deities could spread the word of their deities as they saw fit, under a few conditions, the first being that each would give me a marking that would block other deities from seeing my movements.

Second a quest was be offered by each deity that would grant me experience, a respawn, and spell power points for the training of one disciple from each of the different deities. To ensure none of the deities meddled in my future affairs or relationships, I had each offer a seco
nd quest that provided an astronomical amount of experience points, two respawns, and two spell power points for any time the deities either directly or indirectly granted favor, boons, or incentives in any way to either find me, seduce me, or influence my decisions against the other deities in any way shape or form.

There was a caveat added to the last one, as technically assigning a priest or priestess to be a disciple of portal training could be considered a boon, an exception to portal training was made. With the neutrality pact made, which was surprisingly simple given that none of the deities present wanted to either have their hand shown to the other deities, nor did they want to lose out on what would be the first chance to capitalize on being able to have trained portalists under their influence.

Not so surprisingly it was the neutral goddess Lillithandra who was the voice of reason throughout the whole process. She was the one who pointed out that none of the other deities wished for me to show favoritism either to any deity on this world or to a deity on another world.

While none of the deities was necessarily happy with the final solution, they were all in agreement that this was the best solution all around. Then each deity provided their own blessings upon my skin that hid both my name, occupation, level, and location from both the deities’ powers and abilities. Additionally a similar bonus was granted to hide my name, occupation, level, and location from the resurrection board.

The idea for the obfuscation on the resurrection board came from HAIL, who had been surprisingly quiet for most of the process. I got the feeling that either HAIL didn’t feel comfortable offering suggestions during this time, or was unable to offer too many suggestions.

In the end I couldn’t have asked for a better solution for my own situation, as now I could not only travel all over Triton without any of the gods or goddesses knowing or interfering with my plans, but now I could travel to the other planets as well. From what it seemed, a grouping of eight or more deities would need to work together in order to over power the seven blessing seal that had been placed on his body.

Derick checked his status on the resurrection board. Instinctively he knew his location was 75,904,215 of 100 million.

Derick kicked himself for not being higher, though he knew that only his recent interactions would count toward his gaining resurrection points. finally knowing that he was now free from being manipulated by the deities, and immune to the possible ire of the other players. With that Derick made a mental note and began finally trying to play the ‘game’ as a regular player. Derick looked at how the sun began to rise over the beach, the red and golden rays showing two different sets of feet had run to the beach. The area where Derick sat with Penelope had been washed away at some point during the night, leaving only signs of a struggle where Penelope fell to the ground. Derick smiled at the sight, then realized he still had all seven deities around him watching his interactions.

Aquarnia came to him the other six deities still watching. “I have asked the others permission and they have agreed to let me reset Penelope’s memories. Additionally, she will no longer be a devotee of my religion, but will be free to choose a deity of her choice.” Aquarnia began, gesturing towards the others.

“Should you meet her in the future she will not remember you, nor will she remember how I demanded she have your child, nor how you saved her. It will be as if you two never met.” She said, a slight pause as the idea of a character reset, began in Derick’s mind. Almost as if reading his thoughts she continued “I cannot reset the city guards’ reactions, nor the reputation gained by the palace guards as you defeated a traveler who had a bounty on his head.”

Derick as if hearing the words for the first time realized there were now two flashing blue messages and one golden box that had been blinking for the entire night apparently. Derick brought up the golden pop-up menu to see that he had in fact killed a fellow traveler.

OhmN has killed TrickeryDickery12 Spell Power increased. +1 for Player kill, +1 Bounty Kill, +1 for new race killed Crimson Elf. Three unspent Spell Power Points.

Derick realizing that he was now a target for possible revenge from the rogue character, and that even while he was free of direct and indirect involvement of the deities, there might be some work-around that a clever deity might find given enough time and resources. Derick quickly placed all three unspent spell power points into his psychic-viewing power, which increased his viewing range to 111 yards, and gave him a 68% chance to see hidden people, places, or objects.

Once the first pop-up menu had been addressed, Derick brought up the first flashing blue box. It was there that Derick saw the first of his two blessings he had received, the first being Protected by the Pantheon of Triton: Effect, protected from any divine powers that would effect the Player directly or indirectly. Then Derick brought up the second blessing Hidden Resurrection: effect, every detail of your character that could appear on the resurrection status board is hidden from other players.

By the time Derick was finished allocating his points and reading over his notifications he could see no sign the deities had even been there. What a strange game. Derick thought to himself, as he wondered what he should do next.

“You could claim your reward from the Matriarch of Jalidan, as the city guard asked you to claim your reward there. Additionally, it is one of the main cities that has a temple devoted to all seven deities.” HAIL began.

Derick was almost taken aback, as that was the most that HAIL had said to him since they were stuck in the cave where Derick had been tasked with learning his profession.

Okay, Derick thought agreeing that getting the training a portalist quest for each deity knocked out as early as possible would be best. Derick walked over, grabbed his staff from the sand, looked out at the surf longingly then decided to strip down and bathe off in the ocean. While it wasn’t the best way to get clean, Derick did feel fresher than before he entered the waves. Also truth be told it was his first time entering into the ocean in any world he had inhabited.

Derick was afraid of possibly drowning, but felt his tension easing as he realized he still didn’t need to breathe. Finally after feeling alive and refreshed after his first swim, even though it could more accurately be described as sinking. Derick got out of the ocean, pulling his shoes over to him with psychic-telekinesis and put them on while the ocean waves washed away any sand that might be stuck to his feet. Then Derick went on, got dressed, making sure to keep his bag of holding under his robe and his dual slung belts. Double checking everything was where it was supposed to be an accounted for, Derick mentally viewed the hill above Jalidan, saw that the area was clear and teleported to the destination.

Derick began walking back to town, yet couldn’t help but hear the rumbling sound of feet. Derick’s instincts took over, causing his muscles to tighten up as he prepared to be tackled from behind by what his ears counted to be no less than five sets of feet. Derick quickly turned, placing his staff in between himself and the charging herd of monsters, all to find it was the group of travelers coming back. Had they been out all night? Derick thought to himself as they all showed signs of fatigue, even while running.

“Hey it’s the quest dude.” Pennywise Clowning said with his beach combing accent.

“This must be his spawn path.” Leandra StillBlade8 added.

The group then all headed toward him. Derick did a quick check of the status, but was shocked to see that all six had completed the quest. They apparently found six pieces of meteorite and a book of Ancient Travel Destinations, which Derick could tell was a book that showed ancient city locations, where the relevant travel points were in each major city and then a brief description of what happened to the cities that were no longer prevalent. Derick was shocked to have gained that level of information from a cursory glance at the quest objectives tab, but guessed it made sense that quest givers could determine how well each task provided had been followed.

Derick was shocked to see that only five of the original six travelers were co
ming back. A quick glance confirmed that the warrior Galmindrier Typhoon’s name was now grayed out. It was sad thinking that this was the original person who had opened up this chain quest for the others, but Derick vowed that he would make the quest line open for him again in the future. As for the others, they had all gained a level. The highest being Leandra StillBlade8 who now sat at level 6. Derick awarded each of the Travelers a successful completion of their quests, once the book was handed over to him. Once experience had been awarded, Derick pulled back his hood, showing his cosmic hair with purple hues. Derick was slightly shocked to see that one of the planets was now almost completely purple, while the others remained solid black dots in a gray and silver backdrop.

“Wow, look at his hair.” Pennywise said, pointing at my hair. I scowled at his finger, causing him to wince as he must have known the gesture seemed rude.

“These are the signs of a sage portalist.” Derick began, pointing to both his hair and then his eyes. “If someone claims to be a sage portalist look for these markings to note a true practitioner.” Derick then pulled out his pendant, holding it out to Rokella, the priestess who belonged to Aquarnia, the one Derick had already noted in his quests as being the follower of Aquarnia who would receive his training. “Take this, copy these runes each into your meteorites. Like the one I have offered to you Rokella ScarletBunny, when next you are ready, come to me stating that you know the runes that will denote Jalindan.” Derick said, pointing to the city that he was going to once again try to enter.
