  Underworld City Guards: Honored

  Chapter 9

Derick entered Jalindan from the side streets and immediately made his way toward the city entrance, where he knew the guard captain resided. This time he was greeted with a few more stares from the city guards than last time. Even the little runner boy looked at him with an odd eye. Derick figured he must look weird, now having three belt with daggers strung over his body, each holding a different number of daggers.

Derick imagined they looked like jagged black and tan teeth covering his robe trying to devour him. Derick went up to the captain of the guard and said “Guard Captain Tannerick VonHussen, I have killed three more thieves from the thieves guild.” Derick said, before waving his hand and plucking the two archers that had arrows protruding from their eyes and the large one handed thief that seemed to have stabbed himself in the back. The guard captain looked at the three bodies, then at Derick and swished his moustache around, no doubt trying to determine how to proceed.

“Thank you, sir.” The Guard Captain said, then continued. “I have been given express orders to direct you to the palace. For your reward.” Tannerick stammered out the last part. It was obvious to Derick that it wasn’t entirely for a reward purpose that Derick was to be escorted.

“Please lead on.” Derick said with a wave and bow of his hand. “Though I do have to ask who this one was.” Derick asked poking at the one handed thief who tried to stab Derick in the back while he spoke to Luscinda.

The guard captain went to the body, flipped it over and then let out a gasp as recognition washed over his face. Once again his funny moustache made a dance across his face, before resting in its normally composed setting.

“I do, this is, was, Termeran Laithe, the leader of the street gangs.” The guard captain looked at the body, then saw the half sword in his hand and the other half in his own back. “Your doing?”

“Yes.” Derick said, before adding “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” He said, while following the guard captain to the palace. Derick noticed that a second guard accompanied the guard captain on his right side, while two other guards fell in behind him. Derick wondered is the escort for my protection, or for theirs?

  “Likely both.” HAIL responded mentally.

It is really good to hear from you again. Derick thought, as he missed how often the plucky voice in his head used to interact with him, versus how infrequently he seemed to do so now.

“Yes, about that. Part of why I haven’t been able to interact with you so freely is that you and your account are under investigation.”

  Under investigation?

“Yes, there was a formal complaint against you placed by Taftinator for your alleged theft of his money and gold. While all subsequent game logs showed that you killed him while he possessed a ‘traveler hunted’ tag it was still brought up as a concern by a premium account holder, which means it has to be investigated. Added to that your potential use of known game glitches to take down impossible dungeon bosses while at level 0 and there are a few more eyes viewing your actions than normal. One of your few saving graces is the fact that you had me on silent while you took down the dragon patriarch. Which is why I am allowed to stay with you currently, though as that was my first warning, after your next warning you might be given the chance to get a different permanent liaison, or you might forcefully be assigned one.”

  What? Why a
re you just telling me this now? Derick lost step and came to a stop in the street for a second as his mind tried to process everything that had just happened.

“I couldn’t tell you about the investigation until all data sets had been retrieved. Also if I had told you and you altered your way of play, they might have reassigned me anyway as you could claim that I was the one telling you how to exploit the game system.” HAIL answered.

So they think I cheated? Derick felt anger fill his face, as he forced his feet to move forward again in cadence with his four guard escorts.

“To be fair, you might have, as you killed both the chag matriarch and the dragon patriarch using a purely defensive power in an offensive way. The first time was clearly an accident. You knowingly used the exploit the second time against the patriarch dragon.”

How else was I supposed to win?

“That’s just it, you weren’t supposed to. You were supposed to unlock the ability, go to a starting planet, learn more about your profession, then train others so you could go back with a group. Then kill the dragon patriarch and hope to run away in time before the matriarch dragon got there. The dragon eggs were there for anyone else who was stupid enough to join you. You would get the profession mastery, while they got partial immunities to different power sets. Instead you got everything - the profession mastery, the partial immunities and got to leave before the matriarch got you.”

After hearing about his exploits from HAIL, he could see how others might want to look into his actions and exploits.

  Do you think I cheated?

“I think you used a detriment to your advantage and out thought the original creators of these worlds. Which is why I am glad I hitched my fate to yours.” HAIL said.

A silence fell over the two as they made their way through the crowded city streets. Finally when Derick was going through his past altercations to see if there was any other way Derick could have won the fights with the knowledge that he had at the time. Each time through there was only one way to complete the objective given, an apparent exploit that would likely be fixed in the future. Suddenly the guards in front of Derick parted, revealing a large palace that had golden flames that were accented by Ivory tops and onyx bottoms, an interesting blend that caused the golden flames to show ever brighter in the bright sunlight. From there the guard captain said a few words to the palace guards, after which time a palace guard that looked to be Tannerick’s father? Grandfather? Approached and gestured with his hands for Derick to follow. With that Derick began walking up the palace steps. Where his city guard entourage fell away one step before the first palace step, where they were replaced by two palace guards. I guess they want twice as many guards to strike me down while in the palace?

“Well you did kidnap a princess who was returned to her room crying and smelling like salt, in nothing more than her slip and girdle.” HAIL said.

Derick thought about this as he entered the winding hallways that went straight in turned left, then right, then left again, before opening up to a grand entry way. As he approached he could feel the outline of a blue room overhead, a sign that Derick instantly took to mean that it was a hidden room of the palace. Also in the room were two blue figures that pulsed slightly darker than the room, Derick couldn’t tell whether the two people in the room were blue because they were also hiding in the hidden room, or if they were just considered hidden due to their being in the hidden room.

Finally as Derick approached he felt the formation of what had to be two squads of royal guards that seemed to glow a hostile orange. The two squads of guards seemed to funnel Derick and his eight guard escort toward two people dressed in royal garb, both females seemed to glow and pulse yellow, but as Derick had never felt this type of opinion toward him, he could not understand exactly what it all meant. In his mind Derick associated yellow with trickery and deceit, so does that mean that these two people are being deceitful?

“More than likely they are being deceitful, the psychic-viewing you use takes the mental scans of everyone and then associates it with a color scheme that your mind would easily be able to interpret. Thus why red is for people that are angry and want to attack you. Blue for hidden, green for peaceful or nice, etcetera. It is likely that your mind is picking up a feeling of deceit from the queen and the princess, but I cannot tell you why.”

Derick thought about the statements of his AI, then did a quick celestial viewing that only he could see, and his initial opinions were confirmed. Got it. Derick thought.

“You mind letting me in on this little secret?” HAIL asked.

Can’t you just read my mind?

“I can read your surface thoughts, but I cannot tell what information you pick up, just the way your mind reacts to the information.”

You were able to do that earlier.

“That was before you became a level 10 psychic litch. Now it seems that you have developed more mental barriers, probably a byproduct of your 100% immunity from mental magic and all blue power elements.”

Derick thought about this, then felt a hand grab him from behind as he continued walking forward. Suddenly the guards who had been in front of him parted, letting him see two of the most beautiful elves that he had ever seen. The woman in the royal purple dress sat on a purple velvet throne that was twice the size of the chair that sat to her right and to her left. The woman that sat immediately to her right wore an equally vibrant red velvet dress that was also accented by the chair she sat in. A blue velvet chair sat empty, no doubt that chair belongs to Penelope. Perhaps she didn’t want to see me, or maybe she is on her pilgrimage.

Derick watched as the guards all bowed to one knee. Derick never bowing now stood a good inch over all of the guards and was able to take in the whole room with his regular sight. The room was immense, grand marble stones seemed to flow together in a way that left no room for gaps of any kind. Instead it seemed like the palace itself was made of one giant piece of marble that had been hand carved over years of painstaking work.

“You do not bow before the queen.” The old royal guard who looked a lot like Tannerick growled.

“Oh right.” Derick said, before planting his right foot into the ground allowing him to execute a flawless 180 degree turn, before he bowed toward the way from which he had come, leaving his backside to the queen and princess who both sat in their royal chairs.

“You dare mock our queen.” The guard said, and swung his sword which instantly disappeared into a portal just in front of the guard. Derick closed the portal, letting the blade snap off in a location that was not readily apparent.

“What is this!” The guard demanded. Now the other royal guards had all drawn their weapons and each began swinging. Derick in turn created a few more portals snapping each off once the blade had disappeared completely from view.

“Careful, or you might cut down your queen.” Derick said, with a smile. Derick felt a hand grab a hold of him, and rather than performing the disappearing hand trick that he had to the thief in the back alley way, Derick in turn teleported, knowing that the royal guard would be teleported with him. Then upon arrival phased out of existence, causing the guard to lose hold of him entirely. Then Derick cast levitation, portaled himself to the top of the entry way and waited. Derick looked down to see the group of seven guards who had surrounded Derick looking around in confusion, while the two squads of guards had left their positions, but now stood still waiting for signs of where Derick had gone.

Even the guard that sat far off in the corner, the one that had managed to grab a hold of Derick looked confused. The queen and princess who both still shone yellow now stood up and looked around the room and behind them to see if there were any signs of where Derick was. Derick watched this unfold until he started feeling himself slowly sink to the floor due to the weight of the items and money he carried grabbed a hold of the wall and waited.

A minute passed, while Derick watched carefully. Finally his observation was cut off when he heard a long slow clap coming fr
om behind the wall that he was hanging onto with his climbing ability. The clap seemed to go out to the chamber below and echo in the vast open expanse. Suddenly every eye in the palace room below was on him, yet rather than look towards the mob of soldiers that had been trying to kill him a second ago, Derick turned toward the clapping that came from the hidden room.

“Rumors of your powers don’t seem to do you justice, young portal master,” came the regal voice of a woman. In his mind’s eye, Derick could feel one of the blue dots in the hidden room walking closer, until finally once the dot was within sight of Derick the opaque marble wall turned translucent and revealed an elf who seemed old even by the standards of the gods. She had gray and silver hair pulled back into a long braid that Derick could see traveled back a good 20 feet before being cut off by the darkness of the room. Her skin though wrinkled through forceful nature of her veins forcing their way to the top of her skin still looked smooth and delicate to the touch.

Derick could see that this woman bore some resemblance to the impostor queen and princess who still stood in the ruling chairs of the throne room.

“Please come in.” She asked, waving her hand, to form a balcony with a stoop that Derick could use to walk up and into the hidden room. It was almost as if the palace heeded the desires of the true queen and reformed itself to fit her desire at the given time. Given the way the building quickly responded to both her desire to be seen and the appearance of a balcony and stoop Derick thought that it might very well be a sentient location. Derick seeing this as his chance to leave a potentially dangerous situation tipped his hood to the guards who now all stood in various forms of shock. Derick bowed his body to the horde of onlookers down below, then using his right hand for guidance easily floated over to the stoop and entered the hidden room.
