“I did try, the evil eye entity, thing, made it so I could not close it as it was being held open with magic and connected to your sister. By the time I figured out how it could be closed, your sister was already ensnared. I knew that closing the connection would cause a backlash that would likely end in not only her destruction, but the rest of ours as well. Her body would have literally become the same conduit for correspondence energy that that world was.” Derick said, gesturing to the area where the viewing portal had been a few seconds ago.
“That was…” The princess began but was instantly cut off.
“Amazing!” The aetherial mage said, coming to Derick’s rescue.
“Your quick thinking probably saved not only us, but our sister as well.” Penelope added.
“Sorry about messing up so badly” the fire mage added, wincing as she gently combed her hair behind her ears.
“You can’t just come in here and open portals to other dimensions.”
“Technically I didn’t, well I did, but only after she did.” Derick said, pointing at the fire mage. “That said, the interview process is now over. I will train any of you,” Derick said, pointing to Penelope, the aetherial mage, and the fire mage “who still wish to be trained.” Derick said, expecting none of them to want to become portalists, especially after he literally forced them to go to hell and back, then blew up hell on their way back.
There was a slight pause, as the three princesses first looked at each other, then back to Derick. Well I guess I can say the fire mage created a sustained portal on her own and that should count as enough contractually, especially if none of the princesses want to join me after what they have seen.
“Are you kidding?” The fire mage asked.
“No, I made a promise with you all, and I am a gnome of my word.” Derick said, seeing a weird pattern of emotions radiating from everyone in the room. The depth and ranges of emotions were making it hard for him to make any emotion out clearly, other than he was certain that the royal guards all wanted to strike him down where he stood if only given the order by the princess, or any of the princesses really.
“Are you out of your mind?” The princess asked.
“I fail to see how that is entirely relevant at this point.” Derick said, somewhat jokingly, trying to add light to an otherwise tense situation.
“Of course.” Penelope cut into the conversation.
Did she just call me crazy?
“I too will join you and become a portalist.” The Aetherial mage added.
“Would you still have me, even though I started this whole problem?” The fire mage asked, somewhat ashamedly.
“You, first and foremost yes. Expect to make mistakes, expect to encounter danger and surprises. But to knowingly create a mistake then go out of your way to right the wrong. I couldn’t ask for a better student.” Derick said looking up into the eyes of the fire mage. Then he added turning to the other two as well. “Honestly it is I who should be thankful, I promise to try to do better. Though it seems as if someone has taken the traditional training methods and trapped them, I do not know who or what we saw. I also do not know if that was the last of the being. My guess is that we have only kicked the beehive of some rather large bees.” Derick said, thinking about the power it would take to send a snaking tendril of power through a viewing portal, something that Derick thought to be impossible. What was more concerning was the way the being was trying to force a permanent connection. The whole thing didn’t seem plausible, yet Derick had seen it all with his own eyes. How? Derick thought to himself. I thought I was the last Portalist, but clearly there are others out there who can at least stretch existing portals. Derick made a mental note to be more cautious when creating viewing portals in the future, especially ones that left the planet of Triton.
“Well let us be off then.” Derick said, to the three Princesses. Then gestured to their bags that were filled with supplies and left just outside of the open doorway. “Grab your things and we will be off.”
The three elfin princesses ran to get their bags, then hurried back. Derick took one last look at the main Princess, the Queen’s eventual replacement. Then gave one last look back at the green mage, who seemed to be doing better, but still seemed a little off after the recent altercations. Derick thought that he should say or do something, but he figured that the princess and the royal guards would only take anger and resentment from his obvious statement. So before he said another word, Derick created a semi-permanent portal to a secluded spot of land far away from Jalindan and stepped through.

Chapter 11
The portal seemed to warp on our departure; it almost felt like the portal was being hit from the outside with an immense force of energy. It took a bit of recalibration in mid transit, but Derick was able to strengthen the passageway that he had created. Derick got through to the other side, then waited for his students to come, then waited some more. Finally resigned to his fate, he looked around, expecting to see an ocean current battering against a sandy shore, but instead he found himself inside a small wooden box. While Derick’s size helped to make the small box seem bigger than it probably was, it still felt suffocating. Derick could hear something coming from above him, a sound that sounded like drilling. Instantly Derick knew where he was, he was stuck inside the casket that he began this whole game experiment in.
Did I die? Derick quickly tried to bring up his character screen, but nothing happened.
