  Chapter One

  Laurel

I stared at the gorgeous ring that sat on my left finger. It was perfect, just like Wyatt. I told my parents that nobody was perfect, not even him, but truth be told, in my eyes, he was.

“I can’t stop staring at how beautiful this is.” I smiled.

“Good, because I never want you to stop looking at it. I want you to always remember, even when I’m not with you, how much I love you,” he spoke with seriousness.

“I love you too.” I kissed Wyatt’s lips as we stood by the shore. “Do I have to change my last name?” I arched my brow.

The corners of his mouth curved upwards.

  “Actually, yes, you do.”

“And if I don’t want to?”

“Why wouldn’t you want to? Don’t you like the name Coleman?”

“Yes, I like it. I just think Holloway has a better ring to it.”

His eye steadily narrowed at me.

“Too bad. You’re changing your last name.”

“Is that so? And are you also going to have the word ‘obey’ in our marriage vows?”

He chuckled. “If I could, I would. But I know that’s not even an option.”

“Actually,” I wrapped my arms around his neck, “I can’t wait to sign my name as Mrs. Laurel Coleman.” A grin crossed my face.

  “You were teasing me?”

“Of course. I like to get a little rise out of you now and again.” I smirked.

His lips tenderly brushed against mine. “Very funny. I was anticipating a war.”

“I’ll go to war with you any time, but just so you know, I’ll win.”

“Don’t be so sure about that, sweetheart.” He grinned.

“Oh, I’m sure. A happy wife is a happy life.” A smirk found its way across my mouth.

He sighed. “What have I gotten myself into?”

“A lifetime of love and happiness.” I grinned as I kissed his soft lips. “Should we go tell our newly married friends?”

“Of course. I want the whole world to know that you said yes.” His smile grew wide.

We walked hand in hand back to the beautifully decorated white tent and looked around for Craig and Maddy, but we couldn’t seem to find them, so we headed to the bar to grab a drink.

  “Dr. Jamieson Finn?” I smiled.

“Laurel Holloway.” He kissed my cheek. “How are you?”

“I’m great. This is my,” I glanced over at Wyatt with a wide grin, “fiancé, Wyatt Coleman. Wyatt, this is Dr. Jamieson Finn. I wrote an article on him a couple of years ago.”

“Nice to meet you.” Wyatt smiled as they shook hands. “What kind of doctor are you?”

  “I’m a neurosurgeon.”

“So how do you know Craig and Maddy?” I asked.

“I know Maddy and her family. Her father and I work together at the hospital. By the way, have you seen them? I just got here. I was tied up in surgery.”

“We were looking for them as well. They’re probably out somewhere taking pictures.”

“So how do you know them?” he asked as he took a sip of his drink.

“I interviewed Craig for an article for the magazine I’m working for. We became good friends. In fact.” I grinned. “I was the one who brought him and Maddy together.”

  “Really?” He s
miled. “Nice job. “So, you’re not with the Seattle Times anymore?”

“No. She’s not,” Wyatt chimed in. “I bought the magazine from the Seattle Times and brought her here to New York.”

“Let me guess.” He smiled. “She interviewed you too?”

“She did, and I couldn’t let her go,” Wyatt replied.

“And now the two of you are engaged?”

“Yes.” I excitedly held out my hand. “Wyatt just proposed to me like forty-five minutes ago.”

“Wow. Congratulations to you both,” Jamieson spoke. “Now that would make for a great article.” He pointed at us.

A slow song began to play, and Wyatt took hold of my hand.

“Excuse us, Dr. Finn, but I need to dance with my fiancée.”

“Of course.” He smiled as he gave us a nod.

Wyatt led me to the dance floor and wrapped his arm around my waist.

“Did you sleep with him?” he asked.

“Why? Are you jealous?” I smirked.

“No. Just curious. He’s a good-looking guy and he seems to really like you.”

“He’s hot, and who doesn’t like me?” I playfully spoke. “He has a lot of personal issues. You think we’re fucked up? He’s worse. But he’s literally a genius. He’s won all kinds of awards.”

  “What award did he win?”

“What award hasn’t he won? When I interviewed him, he was just appointed the youngest physician to ever head a major division at Cedars-Sinai and he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine. He entered Harvard at fifteen and graduated at the top of his class in both college and medical school.”

  “Wow.”

“Yeah. Like I said, genius.” I kissed his lips.

“How old is he? He can’t be any more than early thirties.”

“Let’s see. When I interviewed him, he was thirty-one and that was a couple of years ago, so he’s thirty-three now.”

“And you didn’t sleep with him?” he asked.

“No, and even if I did, you can’t say anything because it was before we met. Are you done interrogating me?” I lightly smiled.

“I am. Look, Craig and Maddy just walked in.”

We finished our dance and walked over to where they were standing talking to Dr. Finn.

“Well, hello there.” I smiled as I held up my hand.

“OH MY GOD!” Maddy screeched as she hugged me. “Congratulations!”

“Thank you.” I hugged her tight.

After Craig congratulated Wyatt with a bro hug, he looked at me with a wide grin.

“I’m so happy for both of you.” He hugged me tight. “Like I said earlier, look at us now,” he whispered in my ear.

  “Thanks, Craig.”

“Wyatt, Laurel, I would like you to meet—”

“We already met.” I smiled. “I interviewed him for an article a couple of years ago.”

“Wow. What a small world,” Maddy spoke.

By the time Wyatt and I got back to the hotel, it was midnight. We barely made it through the door before leaving a trail of clothes across the room to celebrate our engagement the proper way.

  Chapter Two

  Laurel

I was on cloud nine and if I thought my life was perfect before, it definitely was now. Wyatt and I returned back to New York late last night and I still hadn’t told Eric, George, and Veronica that Wyatt had proposed to me. I was dying with excitement, but I didn’t want to do it over the phone, so I invited them over for dinner. As I was leaning over the island with my coffee cup in my hand, I thought about how much my life and views had changed.

“You look like you’re in deep thought.” Wyatt smiled as he walked over and wrapped his arms around me from behind.

“I am. I was thinking about how I’m the luckiest woman in the world.”

“And I’m the luckiest man in the world.” He kissed the back of my head. “What time is everyone coming for dinner?”

  “Seven o’clock.”

“I’ll be home around six,” he spoke as he poured himself a cup of coffee. “Have you figured out when we’re telling your parents?”

“I was thinking about that. How about we just get married and never tell them.” I grinned as I turned around and looked at him.

“That would be so wrong, Laurel.”

“But it could be so right, baby.”

“You’re making amends with them.” He tapped my nose with a smile.

I rolled my eyes as I brought the cup up to my lips.

“Call your mom and tell her we’re coming to Boston this weekend. We’ll leave on Friday and come back Sunday.”

I let out a light laugh.

“You really want to do that? And stay at the house? Are you crazy?”

He set his coffee cup down on the counter and planted his hands firmly on my hips.

“Sweetheart, things are different now. Your parents are back on the right track with their relationship and the three of you are growing closer every day.”

“Alfie still hasn’t talked to me since the party. He couldn’t even respond to the voicemail I left him after Charlotte lost the baby.”

“Maybe the two of you need to talk it out in person.” He grabbed my phone from the counter and handed it to me. “Call her now.”

“You do realize what you’re getting yourself into, right? I’m telling you, there’s never a dull moment when the Holloways get together.”

“Call them.” He kissed my forehead.

“Fine.” I dialed my mother and silently prayed that she wouldn’t answer.

“Hello, Laurel. I was just going to call you, but I wasn’t sure if you were back in New York or not.”

  Shit.

“Hey, Mom. Wyatt and I got in late last night. So, why were you going to call me?”

“I was hoping the two of you could come here for a visit this weekend.”

“Hold on a second. Wyatt is right here. Let me ask him.” I narrowed my eye as he stared at me. “He said this weekend is fine. Is there something going on?”

“Your father and I just thought it would be nice to have the whole family together. Bella is coming and of course Alfie will be here.”

“Did you tell Alfie that you were inviting us? You know I’m not his favorite person at the moment.”

“Alfie will be fine. Don’t worry about him. Can we expect you Friday evening?”

“Sure. Friday night will be good.”

“Great. I’ll have Pascal cook a nice dinner for us.”

  “Sounds good, Mom.”

“By the way, why were you calling?”

“Oh. Just to let you know that we were back.”

“Well, that was nice of you to call and let me know. Perfect timing. I have to run, Laurel. I have a meeting for an event I need to attend.”

“Sure thing, Mom. See you Friday.”

I ended the call and let out a sigh.

“I’m so proud of you.” Wyatt smiled as his lips pressed against mine.

I was in the middle of prepping dinner via Skype with Big Tom when I heard the elevator doors open.

“Shit. Hold on, Tom. Don’t go anywhere and be very quiet.” I turned over my iPad.

“Hey, baby. Why are you home so early?” I smiled as I wrapped my arms around Wyatt’s neck and brushed my lips against his.

“I missed you, that’s why. Were you talking to someone?”

“Who me?” I pointed to myself. “No. Why?”

“I could have sworn I heard you talking.”

  “I was singing.” I smiled.

“It smells amazing in here. Did you make all this by yourself?”

“Of course I did. Are you saying I can’t cook?”

“No. Not at all. It’s just you’ve never cooked anything like this since we’ve been together. You had no help with this at all?” His eyes narrowed at me.

I placed my hand on the back of my neck and began rubbing it slowly.

&nb
sp; “Nope.”

He looked at my iPad sitting on the counter and grabbed it.

  “Hello, Tom.”

“Hello, Wyatt. Good to see you again.”

I rolled my eyes as I grabbed it from his hands.

“Fine. Tom is guiding me along.”

Wyatt chuckled. “I knew you didn’t do all this by yourself. Good to see you, Tom.”

  “You too, Wyatt.”

“If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to take a quick shower before our friends arrive. Please, continue your cooking lesson.” He smirked.

I stuck my tongue out at him as he walked away, and he chuckled.

Seven o’clock on the dot and Eric, George, and Veronica arrived. Wyatt made them each a drink while I gave Eric a hug.

“Welcome home.” He kissed my cheek.

  “Thank you.” I smiled.

“How was the wedding?” George asked as he followed me into the kitchen.

“Incredible. Just beautiful. Craig and Maddy are so happy and she looked gorgeous. You’re never going to believe who I ran into at the wedding?”

  “Who?” George asked.

  “Dr. Jamieson Finn.”

“The guy you interviewed a couple of years ago? The one you had sex with?”

“Yes and shush! Don’t let Wyatt hear you say that. He asked me if I slept with him and I told him no.”

“Wow. What was he doing there?”

“He knows Maddy and her family.”

  “What a small world.”

I handed him the basket of rolls and told him to take them into the dining room. Once everyone was seated, I ran upstairs and slipped on my engagement ring. Hiding my left hand behind my back, I picked up my wine glass with my right one and held it up.

“I want to thank you for joining Wyatt and me for dinner. We asked you here tonight because we want you to celebrate with us.” I held out my left hand. “Wyatt asked me to marry him!” I shouted with excitement.

“Oh my God!” Veronica jumped up from her seat and hugged me.

“Congratulations to you both.” Eric smiled as he shook Wyatt’s hand and then gave me a big hug.

George sat across the table with a smile on his face and a tear in his eye.

  “Don’t.” I pointed at him.

He walked over to me and squeezed me tight.
