Gray's Dilemma: A Witches Circle Novella (The Witches Circle) Page 9

by C. Larsen

I push away such insane thoughts. She's a witch. She's probably casting some sort of spell, some glamour to make me resistant to hurting her.

Unable to get the door open, Vasily bashes his fist into the side fender, leaving a dent.

My gaze stays locked on the girl’s compelling eyes. They seem oddly familiar, like I've seen them before, but I can't think where.

Then the wheels catch and she's gone. I watch the car disappear down the road.

Everything in me demands I follow. I know I won’t be able to outrun a moving car, but I can at least follow her scent trail, find out where she’s from, where she’s staying. My muscles strain against the impulse. I shift my weight back and forth on my forelegs, waiting for Vasily to give the order. I have to track her down.

Behind me, Vasily’s voice is filled with something akin to awe. “She looks just like her…. I can’t believe it… She looks exactly like her…”

Momentarily distracted, I turn to face him, cocking my head to the side. Like who?

“Elizabeth,” he says, answering my unspoken question. “She looks just like Elizabeth. How is that possible?”

Elizabeth? Madelyn’s daughter... That’s where I’ve seen those eyes before—they’re the same color as Madelyn’s.

I freeze, watching the emotions play across Vasily’s face—anguish, longing, then overtaking them both, determination.

“I hope you’re recovered from last week,” he says. “Because you’re going on an extended hunt. Ever been to Connecticut?”

“Most teens get a car for their birthday. Me? I get inducted into a freaky coven of witches.”

When Emerson wakes up on her eighteenth birthday, she has no idea that her life will change forever. After her mother’s inexplicable suicide three years ago, she’s gotten used to the scorn and sideways looks of her classmates. She knows that everyone believes her mother was crazy, and that it’s only a matter of time before Emerson cracks herself. So when Emerson starts seeing auras and hearing voices, she begins to think that the rest of the town may be right.

That is, until Caiden, an enigmatic boy from her class, tells her that she’s a witch, just like her mother. With the truth revealed, a whole new world opens up to Emerson, a world she soon discovers holds its own dangers.

Caiden agrees to help Emerson navigate this secret world, training her to control her newfound abilities. But Caiden isn’t the only witch in town. When a rival coven shows up to recruit Emerson, she has to decide whether to join Caiden’s coven, or risk facing these dangerous witches alone.
