“I understand.” Jerrell reached over and patted his hand. “Mind getting me another punch?”

Shiro’s eyes narrowed. “Are you trying to get rid of me?”

  “Yes,” said Jerrell.

Shiro took Jerrell’s empty glass and rose anyway, disappearing to the kitchen.

Jerrell turned grave, keeping his voice low.

“This man is a known sex-slave trafficker. He books a girl, she’s never seen again. We got his name from Harada’s attorneys…they’re throwing all kinds of juicy bones our way now that they realise his trial will go on with or without you.”

Before Kono could respond, Shiro was back with refills.

“So, he probably took my mom?”

Jerrell took his drink, thanking Shiro.

“The interesting thing is, he may still have her. Rumour has it, he keeps a string of tsurekomi yoado—bring along inns is the direct translation, which used to be popular in World War II. He has resurrected these full-service sex inns. They’re expensive to visit and the women are particularly beautiful and exotic. We were told that Siono was in one of them on the outskirts of Tokyo. Matsumi is known to collect women like…unpredictable, dangerous pets. He was given Miki in exchange for tipping the Harada clan off about Shiro’s true identity. I have no idea where she is without having her full name or a decent photo. The one lifted from your cell phone, Shiro, of her in the cage…could be anybody.”

  Shiro grew quiet.

  “So there’s a chance my mom’s okay?”

“I’ve arranged for somebody at the US Embassy in Tokyo to travel out to the inn where she is supposed to be. As soon as I have some news, I promise I’ll let you know. So, what is it that smells so good?”

“I’m marinating some steaks,” Shiro said.

Kono watched his lover go through the motions of preparing lunch but knew that the guy was upset. Nobody wanted to think about their mom being a sex slave…even a valued one and it was unlikely at this point that they’d ever know what happened to Miki. Kono tried, over the next couple of hours to catch Shiro’s eye, but Shiro evaded his glances.

Jerrell, meanwhile, talked of the case moving forward and the necessity for Shiro and Kono to relocate again.

“I know you trust this buddy of yours,” Jerrell told Kono as Shiro cleared away the lunch plates. “I hope your trust is justified.”

Shiro’s gaze bored into Kono. He felt something twist in his soul…his body. Fuck…I really dig this guy. He watched Shiro walk to the kitchen and had to keep bringing himself back to the conversation with Jerrell, who opened the bag he’s brought with him, handing him new photo ID cards for Kono and Shiro, some cash and a secured credit card.

“You need some groceries before I leave?” Jerrell asked. “It’s probably not a good idea for either of you to step outside.”

“We do need a few things,” Kono said.

He was beginning to climb the walls. It killed him not to be able to touch Shiro. He watched Shiro gathering things for the dishwasher. Jerrell asked for a shopping list and said he’d be back. But then he kept talking. By the time Jerrell finally left to go to the store, Kono was anxious to claim his lover’s ass once more.

The door closed. The two men stared at each other.

Shiro glanced at him, desire evident in his eyes.

  “Oh…now you wait?” Kono asked.

  “He might come back.”

“Will you fucking get over here?”

Shiro flew at him, knocking over the detergent bottle.

He threw himself into Kono’s arms. They groaned at the sensation of their hard cocks pressing at one another.

Kono kissed Shiro, struggling with his zipper.

He put his lover across the dining table, Shiro’s pants dangling from one leg. He loved the impassioned cries his lover made as Kono ate his ass, suckled his balls, tackled the guy’s cock with his tongue and unzipped his own fly.

“Oh, God, fuck me.” Shiro yelped.

Kono pointed his hard cock at Shiro’s sensitive opening. All the fucking they’d been doing had taken its toll. Shiro kept up a pleading moan as Kono stood at the edge of the table, his cock rutting deep inside Shiro. Shiro brought his legs up to hook around Kono’s legs. They came together hard as they heard footsteps outside.

“That ought to tide you over,” Kono said, kissing Shiro’s feet as he pulled out of his tight ass.

Jerrell came in with two bags of groceries.

“You had an accident with the detergent. Oh, my. I think there’s enough for the next couple of days, though.”

He put things away and seemed quite happy to hang out, but after their hot quickie, Shiro appeared relaxed and Kono sure felt the same way. He looked forward to a long, passionate romp when they were alone again. As soon as his Lieutenant left, Shiro came right over to him.

“I need to suck your cock,” he said, his mouth moving over Kono’s face, his fingers seeking a response in Kono’s pants.

“Have at it,” Kono said. “But first, I want us a lot more comfortable.”

  Chapter Nine

They got very comfortable for two more days, leaving the bed only for food and bathroom duties. Kono was obsessed with the hot, sweet man in his arms. They awoke, entwined, on their last day there. Time to leave for their final destination prior to the trial.

Shiro kissed him, and in spite of Kono’s morning breath, seemed turned on. Kono upended the guy and they pleasured each other in a ferocious sixty-nine that left them both breathless.

“We need breakfast,” Shiro said, his hands shaky.

Kono liked knowing he was the reason his sexy Hawaiian’s body was aflutter.

They got their gear together, showered, changed, and Shiro made toast and coffee as Kono threw the sheets into the washing machine.

“Are you all packed?” Kono asked as they sat down together again.

  “Yes, you?”

“Yep. We’ll pack the car after we clean up the kitchen and head out to Mastic.”

  “Why Mastic by the way?”

“Well, as I said, it’s the home of a friend and Mastic is kinda in the middle of nowhere but real close to the highway that runs the entire length of the Island. We should be real safe there.”

“So, we gotta stay locked up there for another fifteen days?”

“Yes, Shiro, but it is coming to an end. After the trial, you have to figure out what you wanna do.”

“Oh. I hadn’t even thought beyond being with you actually. I’m in college but I took off this semester to go to Japan and I have to get back to finish my degree. But Kono…”

  “What?”

“Nothing, never mind. I’ll bring the bags out to the door. Did you pack that shotgun in the suitcase?”

“Yep. I can’t just carry it down the stairs in public. Bring the bags out and I’ll clean up these few dishes.”

As Shiro got the two suitcases out of the bedroom and checked all the rooms to be sure they weren’t leaving anything behind, his mind wondered at the thought of life without the man he had grown to become quite fond of over the last few weeks. Was there a way to keep him in his life? Would Kono want to stay connected with him, or was Shiro just an available fuck and now he would be done with him? He decided that once they were resettled in Mastic, he would bring all this up to Kono and see if he could get a sense of where his head was at.

The ride out to Mastic on Route four-ninety-five was pleasant and quick. When they arrived at the new house and got out of the car, it was dead quiet as they were far enough off the interstate that they didn’t hear any traffic noise.

“We’re now about three quarters of the way out on the Island. I think we’ll be more than safe here, especially since we don’t have any close neighbours.”

They got their suitcases and their remaining groceries. They located the key under a rock where Kono was told it would be hidden. They let themselves in and stored the luggage in one bedroom. Shiro went to stock the kitchen as Kono moved the car aro
und to the back of the house to hide it. The house itself was only about four years old, and was very modern but comfortable.

“When will your old lover be home and wasn’t he rather shocked to learn you’re alive and not dead?”

“He won’t be and yes, he was more than surprised. I explained to him that this was all part of a police operation and he asked no questions. I trust him totally. Also, I gave him money to stay elsewhere for the next two weeks and he gladly obliged my request. We have the place to ourselves.”

Kono opened the refrigerator and found it full of food as promised.

“Between what was here and what we brought, we’ll be fine for a while,” Shiro said.

Kono nodded and drew the curtains as Shiro unpacked their bags. Kono retrieved the shotgun and brought it into the living room. The house was equipped with an alarm system and after reading the directions and codes, Kono set the alarm to the on position.

“I see the backyard is all fenced in with a high wooden fence so no one can tell what’s going on in the yard. Couldn’t we maybe get some sun a couple times laying out on a blanket?” Shiro asked.

“Yeah, that maybe possible. Let’s give it a couple days though, okay?”

Before Shiro could answer, Kono’s cell phone rang. “It’s the boss.”

  “Speak.”

“What, I’m a dog now? What’s this speak shit?” his Lieutenant asked in mock annoyance.

“Hey, Loo, nah, I just don’t wanna answer the phone normally, ya know?”

“Yeah, I get it. Are you at the new location?”

“Yes. We got here about a half hour ago. Any issues that I need to know about?”

“No. But there are a lot of people digging around trying to locate Shiro. That includes the media as well as some Asian looking-gentlemen who are laying out a lot of money to find his location. My guess is that they wanna set him up for a hit to tie up a loose end.”

  “Any news on his mom?”

  “Not yet.”

  “Anything about me?”

“No. After your very emotional farewell three days ago, your ashes are now sitting on the shelf in my office. The Mayor even sent down a commendation for you for service above and beyond. He’s gonna be pissed, I think, when you show up in court. He picked a nice rose bush he expects to fertilise you with.”

Jerrell laughed. Kono tried to find the humour in all this, but silently seethed. If the damned mayor ever threatens to jump off a bridge, I’ll give him a little extra push right over it.

“There are gonna be a lot of surprised and pissed off people when I show up. One thing we didn’t talk about is where are we going to stash Shiro when I go in for the trial?”

“Why don’t we stash him over in Jersey? You’ll need to stay away from him so that you don’t lead any killers to him. I’m sure they’d be waiting for you to do something like that and solve one of their problems for them.”

“We’ll talk about it and decide what’s best. I’ll let you know as soon as we arrive at an answer.”

  “You need any money?”

“Nope. We got enough. Do you have the plans set for moving me to the courthouse yet?”

“Yes, but I haven’t put them on paper or told anyone other than the Captain. I’ll go over that with you next week.”

  “Okay boss. Anything else?”

“Nope, just keep your heads down.”

We will, in each other’s asses.

“Will do. Bye,” Kono said and hung up.

“You want some coffee, Kono? Everything we need is here.”

“Sure, then we gotta talk about a couple things.”

“That doesn’t sound good,” Shiro said with a frown.

“No, it’s just planning for the next steps in this whole thing, that’s all.”

Shiro brought the coffee into the living room and sat down on one end of the sofa with Kono at the other end. After sipping his coffee, Shiro asked, “Okay so what’s up now?”

“We need to plan what you’re going to do while I’m tied up at trial and what you’re gonna do when the trial is over. We have two weeks. There’s time, but we should…you know, hash out some ideas.”

“I see. So I can’t stay with you during the trial, right?”

“No, I’m afraid not. It would subject you to intense risk. The Harada clan would put a hit on you without question, and we can’t take that chance.”

  “What about after the trial?”

“Well, I kinda wanted to talk to you about that anyway.”

  Shiro sat up straight.

“I don’t think it’ll be healthy for me, or for that fact you, after the trial is over. Would you ever consider moving to Hawaii with me?”

Kono was stunned. He put his coffee down and sat back. “Move to Hawaii with you? You want me to give up my Detective’s shield and move to the other side of the world? And do what?”

“Well, Hawaii always needs cops, too, and you have to admit it would be far nicer to police in Hawaii then in New York City, right?”

“Again, I’m a police detective here, not a rookie patrol beat officer. Besides, who says I wanna live with you? You’re talking about a lover-type relationship, aren’t you?”

“I just thought that since we….”

“Since we what? Fuck well together? You wanna base a relationship on our ability to get our rocks off?”

“You don’t have to be such a bitch about it, Kono. It’s more than just fucking for me, I really like you, and in fact, I more than like you. I know I could fall deeply in love with you.”

  “You have feelings for me?”

“Yeah, Kono, I do. Is it so surprising that someone would find more in you than just a good fuck?”

Kono didn’t respond. He wasn’t taken totally unaware of Shiro’s feelings for him, but he hadn’t really thought about his own feelings. He was no good at relationships.

“It’s okay,” Shiro said. “I know that look.”

  “What look?”

“Rejection. Not to be a martyr about it, but I’m used to it. It’s okay. I can go back to Hawaii. I can go to my aunty’s house out in Kauai. She doesn’t even have a telephone. I’ll be very safe there.”

“I don’t want you to go someplace with no phone.” Kono was alarmed now. “And hot island guys. Shit.”

He reached across the sofa. His whole body melted into Shiro’s. “Let’s make love. Not war. Let’s not talk anymore. The truth is…I just didn’t know how to react. I like you a lot more than most people I’ve dated and it is more than just sex. Can we leave it at that for now?”

Shiro wound his arms around Kono’s neck. “Yes.”

Kono kissed him. What the hell was he going to do with this? Lovers and moving, giving up a career he loved?

Shiro pulled away as the kiss intensified. He got up and turned the television on and sat back down, sitting close to Kono, who was trying to digest what Shiro had said.

Their attention ripped off love and fastened to the news anchor who had just used both of their names.

“Our investigative reporter has found this afternoon that the Coroner’s office is questioning why the body of slain New York City Detective, Kono Takumi, was never sent to their office for an official autopsy, which is required in the case of homicide. Legal experts say that it would be highly unlikely to pursue a murder suspect in court when they didn’t have the results of the autopsy confirming that the victim died of the gun shots that took his life.”

  “Oh shit…” Kono said.

“Because of this information and the quick cremation of the deceased officer’s body without a formal funeral, Channel Nine is looking into all of the circumstances surrounding the death of Takumi. We’ll keep you updated as we find out more.”

“That’s just fucking great! This, plus the fact that they can’t find you in the system anywhere, is going to lead them to conclude this is all a setup. Why didn’t we think of the Coroner in all of this?”

“What are we gonna do?” S
hiro asked with a worried look.

“Nothing different. They still haven’t concluded anything and we’re still safe here even if they do arrive at the conclusion that I’m alive. It’s up to the department to handle all that, not mine.”

“So, I take it that I should forget about any chance of you coming to Hawaii with me after this nightmare is over?”

“I just don’t see it happening, Shiro. It’s not that I don’t care about you because I do. It’s just that it’s a major life change and I don’t think I’m either ready for it, or motivated enough to make that change.”

“I’m plenty motivated, but that’s fine. I’m gonna lie down for a bit,” Shiro said.

He left the room and Kono didn’t stop him. He felt bad for throwing water on Shiro’s plan for happiness, but he was overboard thinking that Kono would just leave his job and move to an island to restart. Or was he?

They stayed apart for the rest of the afternoon, leaving each other to think and get over any hurt that they were feeling. He put a call through to Jerrell. When he didn’t reach him, he left a voice mail message.

  * * * *

Jerrell called him back a couple of hours later, jerking Kono awake. Dusk was closing in on him and he felt disoriented at first, wondering where he was. Then he remembered. He was at the safe house. He must have fallen asleep on the sofa. His first thoughts went to Shiro.

  “Speak,” Jerrell said.

Kono laughed in spite of himself. “Did it sound as irritating when I said it?”

“Not at all. It’s my new thing now,” Jerrell said. “Speak.”

“Oh…well. I’m wondering about the news reporter with the comment from the Coroner.”

He padded over to the bedroom. The door was still closed. He tried the handle. Locked.

“Kono, it’s going to be obvious you’re not dead when you turn up at the court house. She’s fishing. Everyone’s fishing. We’re going to start steering the attention away from you and onto the Yakuza. They want a fish, I’ll give ‘em a nice big shark! Hey, I’ve got some news for you. We found Siono.”
