“Crazy, flying stapler,” I informed him.
Dezi snickered and quickly walked off as Jackson gave him a cold look. He’d probably never hear the end of that now.
Surprisingly, Jackson did as Dezi said. We walked out the back entrance to the hotel and I ushered him toward my car. He pulled out his cell phone and sighed, “Six missed calls?”
“Yeah, they’re from me.”
His eyebrows rose. “Let me guess, you’d figured it out and you were calling me to gloat?”
“How’d you know?” I elbowed him in the ribs and then opened the car door for him. Once I got in on the other side, I explained, “I had an interesting conversation with Daisy earlier. She mentioned to me about getting that invoice and I put two and two and together after I remembered that Kevin was an IT person. I figured he sent the email to shut Mr. Paladino up. ”
I pulled out onto the street and then hung a right, the complete opposite direction of where Jackson and I lived.
“Where are you going?”
I turned and looked at him with raised eyebrows. “Are you serious? As soon as your mother gets wind of this, she’s going to want to see you. I figured we’d just head her off from the start.”
He sat back in the seat and closed his eyes.“Good thinking.”
Three minutes later, I pulled up outside his mother’s house. Before we went inside, I pulled my cell phone out and sent a quick text to my sister: I’m okay.
I figured as soon as she heard what happened, she’d be calling me too.
Jackson pulled the door open and ushered me inside. There was five seconds of bliss before Mrs. Ward noticed the increasingly red triangle shaped bruise on Jackson’s forehead and we were each interrogated as if we’d stolen state plans.
I touched Jackson’s hand when he rolled his eyes. We exchanged smiles.
This finding bad guys thing was kind of fun. Well, at least this time. This time my life wasn’t in danger. And despite being thrown into a wall, I’d take that any day of the week over having a gun pointed at my head or a knife wielded in my face. Yes, I’d call this case a win, for sure.
Well, now that I thought about it, I’d only call it a win if Mrs. Paladino would go back to where she came from. Then, I’d be perfect.
