  “He knows I’m only kidding.”

“Your mom’s right, Tay. Grab some breakfast, we need to go.”

Rolling her eyes, she passes us on the way to the kitchen, and I snatch the sweatshirt from her.

The door to the garage slams and Michael appears. “Okay, I’m ready to go.”

Paul wraps an arm around his shoulders. “Have a great time and behave yourself.”

“No worries, Dad. I don’t think there’re any elementary schools in the area.”

Paul ruffles his hair and pulls him in for a hug. “Smart aleck. Do us proud.”

“I’ll do my best. I’m going to say goodbye to Tay.” He lopes toward the kitchen.

  “And Michael?”

  Michael turns. “Yeah?”

“Be careful.” Paul’s voice comes out gruff, like he’s fighting emotion.

  “I will, Dad. Promise.”

He turns and wraps his arms around me. “You be careful, too. No crazy driving.”

“We’re all prayed up,” I remind him. “You prayed for everything under the sun last night at dinner. We ended up eating cold spaghetti.”

Paul chuckles. “I’m not taking chances anymore. I know who’s in charge.”

Placing my hand on his cheek, I reach up on tip toes to give him a kiss. Was it only a year ago I thought our marriage was over? And now, with God at the helm, I can’t imagine anything could tear us apart.
