  World TeamTennis

If you’ve ever seen a World TeamTennis match, you have seen my life philosophy in action: men and women competing together, on a team, and all genders making equal contributions to the result.

  — billie jean king

World TeamTennis, which was conceived and launched by Billie Jean King, her former husband Larry King, Dennis Murphy, and a team of investors in 1974, stands out among professional sports leagues for its emphasis on gender equity. The Philadelphia Freedoms made King the first player chosen in the inaugural World TeamTennis draft in 1974, and she also served as the team’s coach. King played 10 WTT seasons and was a member of three title-winning teams—the New York Sets (1976), New York Apples (1977), and Chicago Fyre (1983). She was the first woman to run a pro league when she became WTT commissioner in 1981. Ilana Kloss succeed King as commissioner in February 2001.

Almost every major champion of the Open era has participated in World TeamTennis since it began play, including Venus and Serena Williams, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Rod Laver, John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Bjorn Borg, Tracy Austin, Evonne Goolagong Cawley, Roy Emerson, Ken Rosewall, Fred Stolle, Vitas Gerulaitis, Andre Agassi, Pete Sampras, Stefanie Graf, Andy Roddick, Lindsay Davenport, Kim Clijsters, Justine Henin, Bob and Mike Bryan, Martina Hingis, Maria Sharapova, Sloane Stephens, and Naomi Osaka. The league has also offered the WTT Junior Nationals and WTT community tennis leagues to help develop the game at the grass roots level.

The WTT pro league has featured numerous firsts and innovations (see below), many of which have been implemented by the four Grand Slam tournaments, the Women’s Tennis Association and men’s Association of Tennis Professionals tours.

  format and scoring

Each World TeamTennis match consists of five sets–women’s singles, men’s singles, women’s doubles, men’s doubles and mixed doubles, making WTT the first pro league where women and men received equal playing time and can make an equal contribution to team scoring.

Streamlined scoring: Sets consist of five games (not six) with no-ad scoring and a nine-point tiebreak played when a set is tied 4–all. Let serves are played. The first player to four points wins the game.

  On-court coaching permitted.

The home team coach determines the order of sets (singles, doubles and mixed doubles).

  Player substitutions are allowed, an
d limited to one player, per event, per gender at the conclusion of any point. A player who is substituted out cannot return to the match in that same set.

Instant replay technology was introduced with the Coach’s Challenge (2005).

WTT was among the first sports leagues to use an all–electronic line–calling system, and then the first league to make season–long use of new Hawk–Eye technology which makes live line calls on every point.

Coach’s timeouts during match play were added in 2012. Coaches and a team’s entire roster of players may enter the court area during these breaks.

  Introduced 25-second service clock (2015).

Introduced on-player microphones, a first for pro tennis competitions (2017).

Every set matters: WTT’s Extended Play feature gives the trailing team a chance to come from behind in sudden death if it wins the fifth set.

  fan experience

WTT encourages fan participation. WTT crowds are encouraged to be vocal and may enter/exit the stadium during play without having to wait for a changeover.

WTT started the practice of players hitting balls (often autographed) to fans in the stands after their matches as keepsakes.

Fans keep match balls hit out of play.

Teams host kids clinics each night before matches and children age sixteen and under can come on the court after every WTT match and get player autographs.

Music played between points and sets, and at halftime.

Players have their names on the back of their shirts.

WTT has given away more than 300,000 junior tennis racquets between 2010 and 2020 alone through clinics, WTT matches, and other youth activities.
