Dragonwatch, vol. 4: Champion of the Titan Games Page 40

by Brandon Mull

I’m sure that, as usual, I failed to name everyone who deserves a nod. If I did, speak up, and I’ll get you in the future!

  Note to Readers

We’re almost to the finale! Only one book left!

It interests me that reading a book can be both an individual experience and a collective one. Books can be read alone in silence as well as aloud with others. Once a book is read, you end up with a story world in your mind that corresponds with story worlds in the minds of other readers.

Now that you have finished this book, we could talk about the story world together as if we had been there, and we could discuss the characters as if we both knew them. I enjoy the comments I get at signings and online, especially when the observations reveal that others are engaging with my books. Sometimes I have epiphanies about the stories I tell through the questions I am asked and the insights others share.

I’m excited to write the final Dragonwatch book! It will wrap up the Dragonwatch saga and also provide the true finale to Fablehaven as well. My mind is overflowing with plans, and I can’t wait to get it on paper.

We are also creating a stand-alone version of Legend of the Dragon Slayer, so readers can own the ancient tale Kendra discovered about the Legender. I’m thrilled that Brandon Dorman will provide the spectacular art, and getting a copy will simulate owning an artifact from the Fablehaven universe.

Thank you for reading this book. My readers are some of my favorite people alive. I write these stories hoping others will enjoy them, and I am enabled to create more as readers buy my books and share them. I’m fully aware that this could not be my job without you.

If you want to interact with me, search Brandon Mull on Facebook or Twitter, or look me up on Instagram (@writerbrandon). I like it when readers share pictures or thoughts online, and I do check in personally from time to time.

  Reading Guide

  1. When Kendra returned the crown to the Fairy Queen, she surrendered a chance to claim it for herself. Should she have considered keeping the crown? Why or why not?

  2. Between Hermo, Reggie, Calvin, and Virgil, Seth had some unusual companions in this book. What were their strengths? What were their weaknesses? Which of those characters would you most want as a companion? Why?

  3. Why do you think the Giant Queen looked down on Kendra? Why was she so confident her sanctuary could not fall? In what ways was she right? In what ways was she wrong?

  4. Humburgh was full of mysteries and secrets. What place would you have liked to see Seth visit that he did not explore? Why did it interest you?

  5. Kendra told a lie to get away from Ronodin. How did the lie backfire? Is there ever a good reason to lie? Why or why not?

  6. A gladiator arena was central to the story, but our main characters never fought as gladiators. Would you have liked to see them fight? Which of the main characters do you think would have lasted the longest on the arena floor? Does it fit the personality of Humbuggle that Seth won the Games without fighting in the arena? Why or why not?

  7. The giants were skilled at truth magic, and they created items that could discern whether a person was lying. Would you like to own one of those objects? In what ways would it be beneficial? In what ways might it be troublesome?

  8. What legitimate grievances could the dragons of Titan Valley have had about how they were treated? Did you see the Giant Queen as a good character or an evil character? Explain your answer.

  9. If you could meet the Diviner, what would you want his help finding? Would your question be confirmed as the most important when he rang the tuning fork? Why or why not?

  10. Why do you think Merek and Seth chose to work with Isadore and Basirus? What did they gain by doing so? How did it cause problems?

  11. Why was Humbuggle glad when Seth destroyed the Wizenstone? Do you think he was sincere? Why or why not?

  12. We were never told the circumstances of how and why the Fairy King admitted Ronodin to the Fairy Realm. What do you think happened? Do you expect to learn more about that in the next book?

  13. Why was getting his memories back torturous for Seth? Do you think he can ever forgive himself? Why might that be hard to do? How have you forgiven yourself after making a mistake?

  14. Why do you think the dragons were merciful to Knox and Tess? What methods besides fighting could help you deal with an enemy?

  15. This story left many questions unanswered. What would you like to see explained or resolved in the final book? What would you ask the author if you had the chance? Would it be better if he told you the upcoming secrets or kept them to himself? Why?
