“Our first Christmas with Blaze’s unit, I got sent off with another unit and Brody went to Ottawa with Blaze. It was the first time we had been apart in years.” Skipping details he was not authorized to disclose, Dan shared with them how Brody tracked down, purchased, and arranged to give him the truck they rented and went four-wheeling in before deploying to Afghanistan.
Loki’s eyes rounded with disbelief at the effort Brody put into something which would be meaningful to Dan. “Wow, what a Brotastic thing he did.”
Nick assessed Dan as he gave them a glimpse of the man he hid inside. His intuition told him Dan struggled with accepting the gift. He also gained more understanding of why Dan had been utterly devastated by Brody’s death. His gaze shifted to Jon, glad he removed Dan’s pistol last May.
Bram smiled and set down his cup. “This must’ve come as a huge shock. I’m happy you chose to accept his gift.”
Dan nodded. “Yeah, I had trouble at first, but Brody helped. He left me several CDs with his voice. He had a weird sense of humor, and some of the jokes are off-color, but I would like to share a little of Brody with you.”
Nick smiled. “I’d like that.”
“Me too,” Loki stated with eagerness.
Intrigued by the man who meant so much to Dan, Jon nodded. Perhaps he would gain helpful insight into his rookie.
Bram grinned, and Ray leaned back, both waiting to hear the voice of an amazingly kind person.
Lexa was pleased Dan decided to open up and share with them.
Dan opened his music app and selected a playlist with a few of Brody’s tamer jokes. He hit play.
Brody’s voice reflected he was in rare form, “Okay, okay, Danny. How about this one. What’s the difference between northern and southern fairytales?” Brody snickered. “A northern fairytale begins, once upon a time. A southern one starts, y’all ain’t gonna believe this shit.
“I got another one, just for you. What do you call a smart blond? No, it isn’t Blondie since you are still stumped. I’ll help you out … a golden retriever.” Brody busted up laughing. “Sorry, Danny, couldn’t resist that one.
“Okay, here’s two that are sure to make you laugh, Sinner. Why don’t bunnies make noise when they have sex?” Brody snorted. “Because they have cotton balls!” After laughing at his joke, he cleared his throat. “What is a yankee? You should know this one, Danny, especially with the long stints you pulled in the field.” Brody paused, before his humor infused tone said, “It’s the same as a quickie, but a guy can do it alone.”
Brody sobered, and the team all heard the concern expressed by the man Dan called brother. “I’m sorry about that one. Bad taste. You being assigned mission after mission is no joke. Wish you got to come home for Christmas with us, but if you had, I wouldn’t have been able to sneak out and buy the truck for you. Blaze said next Christmas he is going to ensure we are all together even if we have to be on a mission. All the guys agreed.
“Danny, do not grieve for me. I am in a better place, and I fulfilled my destiny. Death will not separate us … Mary Catherine said I will always protect my forever brother. I know you do not believe in angels, but I do. I also accept as true what the abbess told me. I researched Hamon while you and Blaze went to wrap up loose ends with Mike.
“Hamon is an honored and beautiful archangel, a hero of God. He fell in love with two daughters of man and sired offspring, thus creating two distinct lineages. His first children come from a warrior queen who strove to shield the people of her realm against evil at immense risk to herself. The second line is descended from a queen of compassion who soothed wounded souls with music bringing them back to the light.
“It is said Hamon watches over both lines of progeny from afar. However, once in a millennium one of his warrior descendants will be called upon to protect millions. The worthy son of Hamon will face many trials in his lifetime because Samael, a fallen archangel who leads humankind to evil, will seek to corrupt the chosen one’s soul. However, a son from the lady of light lineage will be selected to safeguard the warrior and illuminate his path to dispel the blackness endeavoring to consume his brother.
“I realize you will think this is all myth or blarney, but me … well, I possess an unyielding belief instilled in me from my childhood as a witness to the faith my beloved mother displayed in the face of pure evil. There are earth angels among us and guardian angels who protect our souls from darkness. Perhaps one day you will believe too.”
His voice soft, Brody said, “When I see you again, I will tell you I told you so. Until then, let the light guide you and remember I am watching over you, brother. May you live a long life and find the beauty of life in each sunrise.”
As “See You Again” which Brody recorded in his voice played, Dan peered at his chosen family. They chuckled at the jokes and now wore thoughtful expressions. When the song ended, Dan said, “That is my brother, Brody Mikhail Hunter. He drew on his faith to help everyone. He used music and humor to keep us all sane during the harshest of times.”
Lexa placed a hand on his bicep, drawing his attention. “Thank you for sharing a piece of him with us. I’m happy you had someone like Brody in your life. He had a beautiful voice.” A soft smile graced her face as she lightly squeezed his arm. Like Dan, she didn’t believe in angels … her faith shaken by the death of her mother, and by her father and brothers discarding her.
“I like his sense of humor. He’s funny.” Loki’s face broke into a huge grin.
Jon grinned at Loki. “You like his humor because it matches yours.”
The team all chuckled as Loki shrugged and mischief lit his eyes as he asked, “So, how did your ornaments go over?”
Dan snorted. “My cousins and Mike thought I was crazy. First time being injured kept me from getting hurt. I’m sure they would’ve wrestled me to the floor and made me pay for it, mainly due to the non-stop teasing from all my female cousins. As far as Blaze and the guys reactions, I was saved from their revenge because I made them all a copy of Brody’s CDs.”
Bram leaned back and smiled. He was impressed by Brody. The man gave Dan and ones who loved him a precious gift. “I’m glad Brody gifted you his voice. I wish we could’ve met Brody. A true friend and brother, Dan.”
Any additional comments were curtailed as Commander Gambill entered the room and spoke to Nick. “I just got off the phone with the Governor’s office. They requested Alpha Team to assist with security for Lieutenant Governor Blunt today at a human rights conference.”
Surprised, Nick asked, “Why?”
Gambrill said, “Blunt continues to receive death threats. He requested Broderick and McKenna to act as his personal guards today, while the rest of you maintain an added level of security. There will be many high-profile attendees and Blunt is concerned about their safety since several threats indicate they want to blow him up.”
Jon raised an eyebrow. “Why not cancel the event?”
Turning to the tactical leader, Walter explained, “Many attendees are from other countries, and the Prime Minister does not wish to show that we are unable to protect them. McKenna and Broderick will be in civies so as not to draw attention to the heightened security. Blunt’s office is sending over their security plans and the schedule of events. You will have three hours to assess and make additional changes. Fortunately, you are all familiar with the venue. The conference is at the Grand Citadel. Dan and Lexa are to meet Blunt at his home by nine to accompany him to the hotel.”

En Route to Blunt’s Residence – 8:45 a.m.
From the passenger seat of their SUV, Dan kept taking side glances at her as a goofy smile played on his face. Unable to stay quiet any longer, Lexa queried, “What are you doing?”
“Nothing.” Dan took another gander at Lexa as his mind went places it shouldn’t while at work.
“You’re doing something. Why are you looking at me with that weird grin?”
&n
bsp; Dan chuckled. “Never seen you in a pantsuit before. Kinda sexy.”
Lexa tapped her earpiece and gave Dan a severe look.
“Relax, we’re muted. I like the suit, but why didn’t you wear the black dress from the Christmas party? We’re supposed to blend into the background.”
“Keyword, blend in, not stand out. And where do you expect me to conceal my weapon wearing a form-fitting dress with a plunging V-neck?”
Dan smirked and waggled his brows. “I can think of a place or two. Sexy Lexie with a thigh holster—”
“Broderick!” Blowing out an exasperated breath, Lexa shook her head and attempted not to smile. “Sometimes … ooh … we need to be professional.”
“You’re a consummate professional … me, well, I’m thinking about where else you could hide a gun …” He broke out in laughter as Lexa slugged his bicep. “Flies are bad in here today.”
“Keep it up, and I’ll unleash hornets.” Lexa couldn’t help but chuckle as Dan continued to tease her. The week off had been relaxing, but she much preferred being on the job, and in particular, partnered with Dan. He made her loosen up more than she ever imagined possible.
As they approached the lieutenant governor’s home, both settled down, resumed their professional mantle, and focused on the task at hand.
Blunt’s Residence – 8:45 a.m.
Shown to the parlor, Dan and Lexa waited, both slightly unsure of the reception they would receive, both recalling the accidental cannabis exposure from their last protection detail of Blunt.
A stunning woman with long brunette hair, wearing a long sleeve black midi pencil dress with white polka dot cuffs, and black heels strolled into the room. Her features accented with expertly applied makeup presented a woman of means and confidence. Stopping before the constables, Mrs. Blunt smiled.
“Welcome to our home. I am Ashley Blunt. Edward will join us in a moment. Before he arrives, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your service and for protecting him during the riot at Pipers Way Pharmaceuticals.”
Lexa shook the woman’s offered hand and answered for her and Dan. “Just doing our job, ma’am.”
“That day you all went above and beyond.” She tittered as her smile broadened. “Eddie certainly was a handful that evening. I hope neither of you suffered lasting effects from the chemicals.”
“No, ma’am.” Dan shared a quick glance with Lexa, as he recalled the interesting circumstances they found themselves in after inhaling marijuana and other chemicals … something neither wanted to experience again.
Striding in with purpose, Lieutenant Governor Blunt went directly to the officers. He extended his hand. “I’m pleased you both were available. My wife and I will be much safer with officers of your caliber around today.” As his security men entered, he motioned to them. “You remember Mr. Blue and Mr. Toke?”
“Yes, sir.” Lexa smiled remembering them playing rock, paper, scissors.
Getting right to the point, Edward asked, “Did your team review the plans and schedule?”
Allowing Lexa to take the lead, Dan listened as she explained. “Sir, we did, and we made a few modifications. Our bomb expert swept and secured all rooms, and we installed additional cameras which Sergeant Pastore and Constable Baldovino will monitor. Constables Lane, De Haven, and Palomo will do continual sweeps during the event and provide back up if a threatening situation arises. Uniformed officers are posted at all egress points to ensure only those with proper credentials are admitted.”
“Excellent. Shall we go?” He held out an arm to his wife who linked hers to his before they strolled out.
Lexa and Dan followed them. Dan would ride with the Blunt’s in their vehicle as he was primary on the lieutenant governor while Lexa tailed the limo and once at the hotel would join them to cover Mrs. Blunt.
Grand Citadel Hotel – TRF Security Room – 4:00 p.m.
As the guest of Blunt’s silent auction fund-raising event entered the reception room, Loki captured screen images and validated the identities against the list supplied by the private company which provided the primary security of the conference. Checking the latest attendee, Loki groused, “Wish I was in the room. I can’t believe Chad Barth is in there.”
Nick eyed Loki. “Who is he?”
Concentrating on the next arrival, Loki muttered, “Seriously, you don’t know who he is?”
“Should I?” Nick continually scanned the hall monitors, aware Jon, Bram, and Ray roved the interior while Dan and Lexa covered their principles.
“He’s only the coolest tech whiz. He developed Neutralize Cypher.”
“And what is that?” Jon inquired.
Loki shook his head. “I work with a bunch of technophobes.”
Ray chuckled. “Loki, just because you are a technophile doesn’t make us technophobes. Isn’t that the software you and Bransworth used when you built the search algorithms to ferret out Plouffe’s financial data?”
“Exactly. I would love to meet Barth.” Loki refocused on his task, so far, the guests consisted of heads of state, royals, parliament members, celebrities, high society, and philanthropists from all walks of life and many countries. All willing to pay five thousand to attend the auction, knowing the proceeds would be used to combat human rights violations globally.
Grand Citadel Hotel – Blunt’s Reception Room – 4:30 p.m.
The Blunts separated shortly after arriving a half hour ago and made their way to opposite sides of the vast room filled with people hobnobbing and snacking on the hors-d'oeuvres as they perused the items up for bid. Lexa stuck close to Mrs. Blunt as she chatted with politicians, entrepreneurs, and superstars with equal ease. Lexa’s gaze continued to be alert for potential threats, but also for a waiter carrying water.
Neither she nor Dan had an opportunity for a break since they arrived and she was starving and thirsty. Wish I ate more than a slice of toast for breakfast. Spying a server approaching, she waved to him, and when he stopped, she requested, “Would you please bring me some water?”
Reece Berry blinked several times. “Water? You want water?” His heart rate jumped up a notch.
“Yes, please. I would go get it myself, but I must remain here.”
Taking a breath, Reece nodded. He limped away to obtain what the lady wished. Today was not a good day. His hand shook as he filled the cup. When the water spilled on the table, he closed his eyes and gripped the edge.
Willing the images to the background with much effort, Reece regained composure. He loaded his tray with champagne flutes, wine goblets, and one tumbler of water. Using a napkin, he wiped the beads of sweat from his forehead then shoved it into his pocket. Lifting the tray, he sought out the petite woman in a suit to deliver water first.
“Thank you.” Lexa downed the entire contents of the short glass. “When you have a chance, would you mind bringing me another?”
“You want more?”
“Yes, please.” Lexa noted the sweating and the twitching of the man. Something appeared off. Glancing at his identification tag, she noted his name, and when he left, she spoke in a quiet voice, “Boss, the staff member who was just by me seems nervous. I’m not sure if it is anything, but perhaps Loki should do a background search on Reece Berry.”
From the security room set up next door, Nick said, “Copy.”
Lexa returned her full attention to Ashley as she greeted a newcomer, Claudette Baxter-Hayes. Lexa assessed the forgettable woman, done up as expected for a member of the House of Commons. She tuned out the woman’s political blathering and scanned the area again before Ashley moved on. Like a shadow, Lexa followed.
Dan didn’t like the crowded room but was glad to be moving around after standing still for most of the day during the presentation. He surveyed the space while listening to Jon, Bram, and Ray as they commented on people they assessed as possible threats. His eyes returned to the auction area, checking to ensure the double-edged curved dagger remained on its display pedestal.
An open and accessible weapon bothered him. But since the item would likely garner high bids and the threat of being blown up concerned the lieutenant governor the most, Blunt refused to remove the blade. When Blunt came to a halt again, Dan turned his focus to the person addressing the man he protected.
Charles Galloway’s face morphed into a huge smile as he caught sight of Daniel. After exchanging pleasantries with Blunt, he said, “Daniel, I never expected to see you here. Did you accompany your mother?”
Blunt glanced between the constable and the baron. “You know one another?”
Yes, sir,” Dan said to Blunt before he answered Charles, “My parents are in Ottawa, sir. I am here … working.”
Understanding dawned. “That’s right. Michael said you were with Toronto’s TRF now. He is here somewhere in the crowd. I’m happy he came with me, not often I can spend time with him. Did you see the khanjar up for auction?”
“Yes.” Dan wondered why Mike’s father mentioned the knife as he overheard Loki’s whispering awed voice say, “Dantastic knows a baron?”
“The carved white jade hilt inlaid with diamonds, rubies, and emeralds in a floral design set with pure gold is a beautiful piece of work. I cannot believe Shareef would part with his khanjar,” Charles said.
Ignoring the comments between Loki and Ray about their surprise over him knowing Baron Wildingham, and Boss admonishing them to refocus, Dan’s stomach knotted, and he was glad he had not eaten since breakfast. The jeweled knife appeared familiar, and now he knew why. Shareef held the blade to his throat, ready to slash his jugular in the sewers of the Al Sattar palace. And a similar one cut Blaze open as he disarmed Savelievich.
When Dan didn’t respond, Charles realized he nearly let the cat out of the bag. The cloak and dagger world was not his strong suit. He shifted his gaze to Edward Blunt. “I might bid on that item.”
