The Loner 6 Page 11

by Sheldon B. Cole

Adamson, seeing the worry in Durant’s face, said, “It’s all right, Blake. She knows.”

Durant looked beyond him to the open doorway of the house. There was no sign of Joyce.

“It’s best this way, Blake,” Adamson said. “You said that one day you might drop in. Don’t make it too far in the future, eh?”

  “I’ll try not to.”

He sent Sundown running and the fully rested horse pounded into the distance, eager, like the man in the saddle, to put this place behind him. Durant eased the horse to a canter and looked back from the rise. Joyce was standing with her father now and even from that distance he could see the hurt in her eyes. He lifted his right arm and they waved back.

The cookhouse door suddenly came splintering out and Bede Strawbridge, reeling, followed it. Bo staggered out after him, fists still pumping. Blake breathed a sigh of relief, touched his golden bandanna and put Sundown into a run again.

Where would it stop? When would it stop? The next town, the next month? He touched at the reins and Sundown thundered down the slope towards the little creek, then Blake Durant returned to the loneliness which was his life.

  About the Author

Sheldon B. Cole was one of many pseudonyms used by prolific Australian writer Desmond Robert Dunn (6 November 1929-5 May 2003). In addition to four crime novels published under his own name, Des was a tireless western writer whose career spanned more than fifty years and well in excess of 400 oaters. These quick-moving, vivid and always compelling stories appeared under such pen-names as Shad Denver, Gunn Halliday, Adam Brady, Brett Iverson, Matt Cregan, Walt Renwick and Morgan Culp. He is also said to have written a number of the ever-popular Larry Kent P.I. novels, but at this late date author attribution is almost impossible. He married and divorced twice, and had three children. He died at the age of 73 in Brisbane, Queensland.
