Perhaps I will.
“They’re dead now, anyway,” Susan concludes, a faint challenge in her expression.
“Shame you didn’t see the attack coming, since you had so many psychics under your control,” I say sourly. “We’re back to where we were eighteen years ago. It seems that I must get personally involved.”
They flinch, and I smile. Perhaps something amusing can come out of this mess. “The next gathering is in five months. We’ll discuss then, who will receive serum boosters this year. I have a feeling – a premonition, if you will – that the number will be less than usual. A situation that might continue for several years. Perhaps even indefinitely.”
Not even Susan meets my eyes.
“In the meantime,” I continue cheerfully, “I assume that all of the Institute’s CCTV uploaded to the network, before and during the attack?”
Susan’s head twitches in what might be a nod.
“I think I’d like to see it.”
They all stare at me. “That would take hours—” Susan objects.
“I have plenty of time.”
I rise, and walk to the window. London’s towers and roads stretch out into the distance, the world below improbably small from this height. For a moment I allow myself the fantasy of sliding my useless team out of the window, throwing them to the wind and staring again.
I look back at my oldest ten, waiting nervously.
“Let’s play a game,” I tell them. “Who wants to live forever?”

About the Author
I grew up in London and now live on its edge, in a village where the sprawl of the city turns into lavender fields and lakes. I live with my husband, son, two suspicious cats and some very ungrateful fish. A Girl From Forever is my first published novel.
I write because I’ve tried very hard to quit, but I don’t seem to be able to.
Sometimes I climb mountains.
