A Frosty Tail Page 13

  “Tantrums?” Liam frowned.

“All that snow, throughout January, and it didn’t melt until mid February? That was all me, being very unhappy.”

Liam didn’t really know what to say except: “Oh!”

Jack nodded. “They wouldn’t let me come back to see you, so I made my feelings known, and hey presto, here I am. They relented, and as long as I promise not to interfere with my brother and sisters and the delicate balance of the other seasons, I can stay in this form as long as I want, well—” He rolled his eyes. “—There are two other conditions.”

“And what are those?” Liam asked, not wanting to sound wary, but he was so tired, and he didn’t think he could cope if Jack told him he could only stay for one night, or something equally unbearable.

“I have tae do my winter thing. I can’t avoid that, so I can’t be here during the winter months. You saw what happened when I spent two days with you, big feller. Played havoc with my equilibrium, you did.”

Liam chuckled, nodding. “I don’t think I’ll ever forget, Jack.”

He looked down at his feet, and then at Jack’s, which were, as always, naked and every bit as slender and elegant as he remembered. Jack was wearing the same clothes as before, a too short t shirt and faded jeans. His eyes still sparkled that amazing crystal-clear blue and the fading evening light lit up his frost-white hair. However, it was the man’s smile Liam had missed the most. That dazzling, mischievous, foxy grin. He wanted nothing more than to close the gap between them and wrap his arms around Jack, but there was one more thing he needed to know.

Liam regarded him with narrowed eyes. “What’s the second condition?”

Jack tipped his head to one side, the action so fox-like and so familiar that Liam’s heart skipped a beat.

“The second condition all depends on you, big feller.” Jack explained. “I can stay in this form as long as I want, but I’m intrinsically a fox, and a fox needs a den. I can only stay here if you’ll have me.”

“If I’ll have you?” Liam gasped, taking a step closer to Jack. “Bloody hell, Jack, have you any idea how much I’ve missed you over the last three months? If I’ll have you? Why do you even have to ask? Of course I’ll have you.”

“Even if it’s only for nine months of the year?” Jack asked, his blue eyes filled with icy hope.

Liam shrugged. “So, you work away for three months. If I know you’re coming back, I can bear that.”

Jack’s smile was as bright and as beautiful as the swirling crystal patterns he’d made on the surface of the frozen lake that fateful day three months before.

“I’ll always come back to you, big feller. I love you.”

Liam finally closed the gap, wrapping his arms around the man and holding him tight. Jack’s lips found his and they kissed, the cool sensation sending a wonderful chill through Liam’s entire body.

Liam kissed Jack’s jaw, neck and finally his wonderful, frost-sparkled hair.

“I love you too, Jack Frost. Welcome home.”

  The End

(at least until next winter, anyway)

  About the Author

Dawn is from the North East of England. Her life is spent juggling. The juggling balls are: children, husband, work (occasionally), voluntary work, professional knitting (notice she doesn't class this as work), and writing. When she has time she actually sleeps.

The whole point of writing for Dawn is just to get it all off her chest and out of her head. If she doesn't write it down, she ends up having long conversations with the characters out loud and her husband thinks she's crazy.

I like chocolate, coffee and donuts, sometimes all at the same time.

I love evenings around a campfire singing in the company of good friends.

I like listening to the dawn chorus even if I’ve been awake all night.

I like reading stories with characters that are filled with hope even in their darkest hours.

  I like happy endings.

I write LGBTQ+ Romance (with happy endings of course).
