Kindling for the Heart Page 25

“Sure, I guess so.” Jo paused, her hands so warm and soft as their fingers entwined. “Will your ex be there?”

“No, of course not.” Sam kissed Jo’s hands, closing her eyes in relief. “Trish is moving out this weekend. I’ll be putting the house up for sale because I don’t need it anymore. My home is with you, here in Timmins.” Sam felt Jo’s lips on hers, the brief peck so validating.

“Enough already or we’re leaving.” Anna laughed as the three of them began setting the table.

“Let’s get your stuff inside our home before it freezes.” Jo smiled as she led Sam to the door.

Once her luggage was brought in the house, Sam was left on her own in Jo’s bedroom to grab a quick shower. Following her long stressful day and drive, she was starting to fade and needed to be refreshed. Warm water washed over her skin as she rejoiced at her new life, luxuriated in the exciting moment, and hungered for later when she and Jo would make wild, passionate love.

When Sam got back to the kitchen, Jo was warming plates on the stove while the rest of her family chatted amongst themselves at the table. Mollie chewed on a rawhide bone, her tail flopping up and down against the kitchen floor. It was indeed a joyous day. Sam’s heart throbbed with excitement over her new beginning.

“How’s my sweetie?” Sam snuck up behind Jo, whispering into her ear.

“Horny.” Jo’s answer was barely audible as she turned and folded into Sam’s arms. “Let’s eat.”

Sam and Jo followed everyone outside after dinner to bid their farewells. There would be no bonfire on this night as it was superseded by another burning blaze that was getting out of control. After everyone left, they took Mollie for a short walk in the moonlight. Before going back inside, Jo reached into Sam’s heart of rose petals.

“This bunch of kindling is too precious to burn. I want to keep it as a souvenir.” Jo rustled up the bundle of cedar sticks and red rose, her mitts clutching them in the dark.

Sam filled her lungs with the cold fresh air, and then breathed out a cloud of steam. “It’s already done its job. It was kindling for the heart, not meant for setting a real fire.”

“But it did.” Jo clutched the kindling and rose against her chest. “The fire in my heart is more real than any fire I’ve ever felt before.”

“Mine too.” Sam hugged Jo under the stars until the cold chased them inside.

Sam followed Jo to her bedroom and closed the door to keep Mollie out. The ravishing began straightaway as they tore each other’s clothes off, toppled onto the flannel sheets, and came together.

“I can’t believe this is happening.” Sam’s voice caught as their naked bodies entangled. They fit together as though one. “I’ve missed you so much.”

“Oh Sam, I’m so sorry for the way I’ve behaved with you.” Jo’s tears flowed, dripping onto Sam’s chest. “I was sick to my stomach every time I thought about you. I felt so betrayed, but now I know that the real deception was my own heart. I was so sure you were going to tear it apart like Jan.”

“Shhh.” Sam wiped Jo’s tears with the sheet, gently drying her eyes. “You had every right to be worried. It was my fault for being such a jerk in the beginning.”

Jo swallowed, her breath soft against Sam’s neck. “That first time at the cottage… My God, Sam, you made me feel something I’d never felt before. And I was scared.”

Sam rubbed the back of Jo’s head, fingers kneading her scalp. “You sparked my heart that night too. It was totally unexpected and began to change the way I saw things. I need you so much, Jo.”

“And I you.” Jo rolled on top and kissed Sam’s lips, her tongue exploring. She began to caress Sam’s breasts with her own, then reached into the center of Sam’s arousal.

Sam’s hips lifted off the mattress and her hands clung to Jo’s arched shoulders as fingers slipped inside. “Yes. Oh yes.”

“You’re so wet. And soft.” Jo’s stroking hastened, circling and adding pressure. Sam held her breath, writhing as an orgasm began to crest. “Breathe.”

“I love you, Jo.” Sam gasped then wailed as her body convulsed and her hips dropped back to the bed in exhaustion. She gripped Jo, her overjoyed heart pounding with desire to please as she let out her breath.

“It’s your turn now.” Sam rolled onto Jo, fighting against exhaustion and mustering up energy to travel Jo’s body. She crawled up and down, planting kisses everywhere in the desire to please. She brought Jo to orgasm with her tongue, lightly flicking and bringing release almost immediately.

“Oh Sam.” Jo’s gasp lasted the duration of her sustained climax and ended with a yelp. “This is the best Valentine’s Day ever.”

“For me too.” Sam’s eyes closed, her smile wide. “This has been such a special day. I wish I had the energy to prolong it for another round. I hope it’s okay if I fall asleep now. I’ve been up since four thirty this morning.”

Jo kissed Sam’s forehead. “Of course it is. I’m looking forward to just holding you all night and listening to your breathing.”

“And my heart beating for you.” Sam felt herself fading, her words almost a whisper.

“We’re going to have a wonderful life together.” Jo squirmed against Sam. “I’m so excited to see your place in Toronto. We can take my truck, and I’ll do most of the driving since I think you’ve done more than your fair share over the last little while.”

“Sounds like a plan.” Sam smiled as she drifted off to sleep, a crackling fire in her heart.
