Love Finds A Way
Page 14
“You scared the life out of me,” I look up at the ceiling and take a deep breath. She really did.
“I’m sorry, Xo. I’ve just,” she breathes, “been so out of it for the last few months.”
Now I definitely feel like the cause of everything. So she was drinking because she’s upset about me? Basically, she’s saying that it’s all my fault, and that’s what the kids will believe. For fuck’s sake, I believe it.
“You shouldn’t be drinking so much, Petah,” I rub my temples, “I understand that you’re hurting, but, but—“ my lips quiver. If anything did fatally happen to her, I don’t think I would’ve ever forgiven myself.
“I know, I’m sorry,” she reaches out for my hand, and I can’t help but look at her broken arm. Though at least one is functional.
“We can’t do this. I’m—“
“I know that you’re with someone else. And I should have respected that from the beginning. But is there really no chance for us?” No words leave my lips. My immediate thought is no, but should I say yes? Won’t it make the kids happy? Would it make me happy? Bethany… and her sweet baby boy… I can’t say yes, when my heart belongs to someone else.
“Petah, I can’t, I—“
“I understand. I just needed to make sure. Worth a shot, right?”
“Right,” I close my eyes for a few seconds, “I’ve told you this a lot over the years. I do love you, I’m just not in love with you.”
“Are you in love with her?” I don’t answer, but I think that’s more than a response, “I just want you to be happy, Xo. If not with me, then with her. I love you too.”
* * *
It took a traumatic accident for Petah to remove the stick up her ass. After her recovery, she travelled back to New York in search of new clients. Aria Reynolds had already fired her for slacking on the job when she was going through her depressing state.
Bethany’s been supportive, but also worried. She knows how Petah feels about me, but also how I feel about her. I wish that she could be secure about my feelings towards her, especially since she’s the younger, more attractive one.
Mary and Ethan are still at odds with how I decided to handle everything. They still wished that I would have chosen their mother instead of Bethany. But I don’t have a say when it comes to the people they date, and it should be the same for me. I’m their mother after all, and I have a right to fling my middle finger in the air and fight for my freedom of choice. Isn’t that what women have fought for, for so many centuries anyway?
EPILOGUE
8 months later
“You two really are a cute couple,” Flynn comments while Anderson pours us all drinks.
Their kids are somewhere upstairs showing Blue their new robot toy. It’s apparently remote controlled and can shoot darts aiming twenty feet away. I hope I don’t become a target, because my old bones can’t handle a trip to the emergency room.
“Yeah, I think so too,” Bethany takes a sip of her drink, as she looks at me, a cute grin on her face.
“Still taking it slow?” Anderson asks, as he hands me my drink. I shrug and lean back, not knowing how to say that I’m so excited that we took the next step in our relationship.
“We’re way past that, aren’t we, babe?” I purse my lips and raise my glass, almost bursting with joy, or is it just the amount of alcohol in my system?
“By which you mean?” Flynn raises a brow, and my jaw tightens. Say it, just say it.
“We’re moving in together.”
Wow, that’s so relieving to have out there. I’m still not sure how to tell my kids, or anyone for that matter. Who would have thought that I’d share a bed with someone again? And be responsible for a kid… again?
“And we excluded you two from the u-haul theory,” Anderson shakes his head, “typical third date outcome.”
“It’s been ten months.”
“Really? It’s been that long?” Anderson looks at the time on his wrist watch, “damn, I could have sworn that I’m nine months younger.”
He sighs and leans his head against his husband’s shoulder.
* * *
An entire year has flown by so quickly. It feels as though it was just the other day that we were celebrating my forty-ninth, now it’s my fiftieth. Fuck.
News got out fast about Bethany and I moving in together, and let’s just say, Ethan really isn’t happy about it. Mary’s flame has died down a bit, but she doesn’t seem too happy either.
As for Petah, she’s currently in Baltimore, probably by a poolside, sipping on an long island iced tea. She’s rediscovered her youth and the endless possibilities of young women. Since I’m with Bethany, she finds no need to have age restrictions anymore. I can’t blame her. I just want her to live her life, so that I can live mine.
“Happy Birthday, mom,” Christopher pulls me into a hug and hands me a small, gift-wrapped box. It’s quite tiny from what he usually gives me. Last year I got a perfume set from him, unlike the year before that when they all chipped in to buy me a 24 karat vibrator.
“Thank you, sweetheart,” I kiss his cheek and hold the present against my chest. We’re all in the backyard, and Bethany wants to sing for me tonight. I told her only one song, because I want her by my side for most of it.
“Open it,” he urges, raising my curiously. I open the lid of the box, only to find a keyring with Bethany’s face on it. I look up at him and he smiles, “since you’re selling the house, I thought you’d need something to put your new keys on.”
I pull him into another hug. That’s very thoughtful of him. It’s also him giving me his blessing to be with her, which I truly appreciate.
Since I no longer need five bedrooms and four baths, Bethany and I decided that it’s best for me to move in with her. The kids were reluctant to give up the home that they spent their teens in. But at least it’s not their childhood home. We sold that house after the divorce when I bought this one.
It’s currently up for sale, but I’m basically living with her already. I spend most nights there, and I even take up more closet space now.
“I want to say something,” Jane lifts her wine glass. Alexander is in his father’s arms, already sleep. Demetri will have to take him up to the crib that I’d set up in Jane’s old room for him when he’s here.
I can see my friends looking behind me, and when I turn, there’s my gorgeous girlfriend—in six inch, red heels and the most gorgeous gown that my eyes have ever landed on, or maybe it’s just because it’s on her.
“I wrote a new song for you,” she whispers in my ear, and the hairs on my skin raise.
“Okay, lovebirds. At least let me finish my speech,” Blue comes running from inside the house beside Anderson’s son. Anderson wasn't invited the year before, but Bethany made sure to invite him this year, especially since she was the one to plan the party.
“Mommy!” He leaps into my arms and I lift him up. Jane glares at me, not appreciating all the interruptions.
“As I was saying—“ she narrows her eyes, “mom had been afraid of letting her heart open for years. And I’m happy to say that she’s finally found someone worthy of everything that she has to offer,” Bethany holds onto my arm and looks at me, the smile on our faces illuminated by the night sky, “I’ve honestly never seen her so happy, even though she’s now one more step into the rabbit hole.”
At a moment like this, my jaw would usually drop, but instead I laugh, “well, thanks, sweetheart,” I arch my brow at her.
“If it wasn’t for my superb biography skills, and Mary photoshopping that photo on the dating site, you two might not even be here today,” what the fuck is she talking about? I look at Bethany and she shrugs.
“She’s just pulling your strings, babe.”
Photoshop? That photo wasn’t photoshopped! “Yeah, mom, it was photoshopped,” I frown and grit my teeth, “I only fixed your neck fat, no big deal,” I touch my neck and cringe. I don’t have any fucking neck fat.
“To sum
it up, mom’s happy, and that’s all we could ask for. Thank you, Bethany,” Jane raises her glass towards Bethany and earns a smile. I look at Ethan, who’s standing at a far distance from all of us. He nods at me, and gives me his charming smile—a sincere smile that I haven’t seen in a long time.
“I love you too, mommy,” Blue pulls on the strap of my dress. I place a kiss on his cheek, before Jane takes him from me. Don’t you have your own kid? I turn to Bethany, and see her hand stretched out for me to take.
“Dance with me?” I don’t hear any music. But someone turns on the surround system, because Bethany’s voice fills the room. Is this the song that she wrote for me?
As we dance, and her melodious voice fills my ears, I realize that regardless of all the obstacles in our way, I was the only one holding myself back. It didn’t matter what my kids had to say, or my ex-wife. At one point I was pushed to date Bethany, and at another, I was shunned because of it. But in spite of all of that, I chose her—I chose to be happy. I chose a woman who means the world to me. And even though she might be considered too young to date a fossil like me, I’ll love her dearly for as long as I can. You see, our age difference doesn’t matter, to us anyways. And whoever wants to judge us for living our lives how we please—to love who we please, they’re just not living correctly.
The most important lesson that I’ve learnt in the past year is that Love, even with obstacles and setbacks, Love, Love does… Love finds a way.
THE END
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I’m an anonymous writer from a country where same sex rights are illegal. Since I can’t express myself vocally, my stories are even closer to my heart. I’ve got almond colored skin, and am mistaken to be of Spanish descent too many times to count, though I’m five different ethnicities combined into one weird-ish woman, but unfortunately no Spanish there. Does British count?
My books all express a piece of myself, in one way or another. There’s got to be at least one that interests you, since I write about a variety of emotions and scenarios. I’m an eighteen year old who spends her days on her computer, while also helping with the family business. There’s nothing better than being able to complete a book and upload it onto amazon, before moving onto the next.
Leave a review, please?
It will be very helpful and
I will really appreciate it!
Just a simple ‘good book, I enjoyed it!’ would do the trick.

An Excerpt
/>
The cab stopped directly in front of her destination, which would usually be almost impossible to do, with the constant overflow of traffic and the inability to ever locate an available parking spot. But it was 6:00 in the morning, and as presumed, most residents and tourists were hustling out and about.
Rosalie Watson stepped out of the car, the heels of her nudes making friction with the smooth concrete of the sidewalk, and that intoxicating aroma hit her nostrils almost instantly. She had missed the feel of home—the comfort of knowing that the one who she loved was only steps away from her reach. The thoughts of her lover almost made her forget to pay the driver. She sheepishly smiled, knowing that out of all things, forgetfulness was sometimes her greatest weakness.
