Magic & Memory Loss Page 17

by Eleanor Rousseau

I glared at him. “I have never regretted marrying her, not for a moment.”

“I know that but I had hoped you would be able to distance yourself a little, emotionally. It just feels like you didn’t live with her long enough for you to be having this much trouble without her.”

I bared my teeth at him. “You couldn’t possibly understand. She was the first good thing to ever happen to me, she was the strongest, most passionate person I had ever met.” I took a deep breath, trying to distance myself from my emotions.

He sighed softly. “Have you spoken to Jay lately?”

I huffed. “He’s retired, took this almost as bad as I did. He won't forgive himself for what we did.”

“You couldn’t either, although I know you’re more bothered by the result than the action.”

  “You make me sound insensitive.”

“You can’t deny it but since you’re half demon I’ll overlook your flawed morality.”

I glared at him just as we heard a knock from the back door. My heart thudded in my chest, no matter how many times Trip came there was always a chance that Kia could come with him.

Experience had taught me it was a very very slim chance but some stupid stubborn part of me held out hope. I hurried out back and patted Trip’s head with a soft sigh as I saw his mistress's absence.

  “Hey, boy.”

He leant forward to nuzzle my neck sympathetically.

“She doing okay?” I asked softly.

  He nodded his large head.

“You keep taking care of her. Tell her I love her.”

  He nuzzled me again.

Jem came running out to hug the dragon. I sighed softly before lifting him into the pouch that was secured around the dragon. I strapped him in tightly. “You be good for mama, Jem,” I said softly.

He reached up to touch my cheek. “Bye, papa.”

I kissed his forehead. “Bye, son.”

“You be careful with my family,” I stroked Trip’s head gently before stepping back. I turned away, I has long since gotten tired of watching him take my child to be with my beloved even when I couldn’t join her.
