Alexei scooped her into his arms. She was finally home.
Epilogue
“Are you sure about this?” Cassie was lying on top of him, both of them naked. It was his favorite thing. They’d made love twice already and he was still hard.
“No,” he answered honestly. But there wasn’t any other choice. In the months since they’d left Alaska, they’d both done some adjusting. He no longer searched out people for blood. A few sips from her once a month satiated the hunger inside him. It was potent stuff. Because he was mostly polar, he hadn’t needed as much as a regular vamp to begin with.
“What should I wear?”
Alexei stroked his hands up and down her bare back. Her skin was so soft. And she always smelled so good. That made sense now, considering who her father was. For some inexplicable reason, Death always left the scent of flowers behind him. For her, it was a natural perfume that always made his dick hard.
“I have no idea.”
“This is serious.” Her brows were furrowed and her lips were pursed. “They’ve asked us to dinner.”
“I can guarantee it wasn’t Maccus’s idea.”
She nibbled on her bottom lip. “Do you think he really wants us there?”
The invitation to join the other couple for dinner had arrived this morning. He still hadn’t gotten over the shock. “If Morrigan wants us there, then he’ll suck it up.” Maccus wasn’t exactly known for his social skills. Of course, neither was he, and he was going to have dinner with the man this evening. Why? Because it was what their women wanted.
And he wouldn’t change a thing.
“And nothing more about the hit on me?”
“No.” And that frustrated him. “According to Maccus, Egan was responsible for it and was the one to put up the money.”
“So it’s over then. The job is cancelled and the money in the account drained.”
There were too many unanswered questions for his liking and nowhere to find answers. “Egan was low-level, from what you told me. Why would he even think to come to us? And where did he get the money? Reapers don’t need any. They don’t have a mortgage or need to buy food. And it wasn’t just me he tried to hire. Don’t forget Damian and the other vamps.”
“You’re right, but I really have no idea. I didn’t know him all that well. I sent him on jobs but never actually worked with him. I was in charge of a lot of reapers. We may never know the full truth.”
“Your dad questioned Felicia?” She’d been in contact with him several times over the past few weeks.
“You know he did before he ended her existence. There’s been nothing new since. He couldn’t uncover anything or anyone other than those two.”
That bothered him. If the reapers had help, it had to come from someone powerful if neither Maccus nor Death could uncover them. Rich, too, if they were willing to spend that kind of cash. And what was their motivation? That worried him, even though Cassie was safe now. He’d handle any future threats.
“What are you thinking?” She leaned down and rubbed her nose against his, the gesture both playful and sensual.
“How lucky I am.” Putting his worries aside, he cupped her ass in his hands and squeezed. She squirmed against him, settling herself more firmly against his erection. He shifted her slightly and slowly pushed himself inside her.
She gasped and wiggled, trying to take him deeper.
“I love how strong you are.” He pulled her down so he was fully inside her. “I love your compassion, your spirit, your intelligence.” Having a good grasp of human nature and totally fearless in battle, she’d proven to be a very adept partner. Not that she’d actually been involved in the last job he’d taken. She might be Death’s daughter, but he wasn’t taking any chances with her safety.
“I just love you.” It was a gift he never took for granted. He loved and was loved in return. For an assassin, a creature labelled a monster by others, it was everything.
“And I love you.” She pushed up so she was sitting, driving him even deeper. They both moaned. “But I still don’t know what to wear tonight.”
“Later,” he told her as he rolled, taking her under him. “I’ll help you figure it out later.”

About the Author
Once upon a time N.J. had the idea that she would like to quit her job at the bookstore, sell everything she owned, leave her hometown, and write romance novels in a place where no one knew her. And she did. Two years later, she went back to the bookstore and her hometown and settled in for another seven years. One day she gave notice at her job on a Friday morning. On Sunday afternoon, she received a tentative acceptance for her first erotic romance novel and life would never be the same. N.J. has always been a voracious reader, and now she spends her days writing novels of her own. Vampires, werewolves, dragons, time-travelers, seductive handymen, and next-door neighbors with smoldering good looks—all vie for her attention. It’s a tough life, but someone’s got to live it.
