by Scar, Rick

Hanging down on Will’s right, struggling to keep his grip, was one of the men who tried to rape Leah. And Leah was hanging down on the left.

…The man died again and again. Dozens of times. In a variety of ways. Will did not want to stop. He stoned the rapist. Sliced his flesh with dagger-like claws. Put his eyes out slowly, relishing the screams of this virtual bastard. Invented new and new methods of washing his past moment of weakness off with the offender’s blood.

  ***

Hanging down on Will’s right, struggling to keep his grip, was one of the men who tried to rape Leah. And Leah was hanging down on the left.

Two hours later, Will still kept killing this scum, restoring peace to his soul. He was oblivious of his sister’s body transforming while he killed the enemy.

Finally seeing the result of her transformation, he froze on the spot. What he’d been trying to protect her from had now permeated her body, soaking it through and making her a monster from hell. His sun and light was now a creepy, abominable thing of that very abyss she’d once got him out of.

Will collapsed to his knees, tears streaming down his face for the first time since he was nine.

“No. No. No. No,” Will muttered, picking her up in his arms, hugging her, and rocking her as the baby she’d once been. “She can’t… No, no. Not her. Oh goodness, not her!” His tears dropped to the monster’s scaly, slimy skin. Her eyes had rotted away, her whole body reeking, swarming with bugs and cockroaches. She lay still in the arms of the one who’d made her that.

His mind was off. Time stopped.

Completely devastated, Will did not move. His mind wandered back in his memory, to the days when his sister was young, happy, and laughing. She can’t become a monster. I’m her shadow defender from all the dirt and darkness of this world. I must take all that away and hide from her.

The eyes of the once-powerful sorceress watched him from above.

  “Save him… Save him…”

Slowly, Will came to, still holding the creature in his arms. He seemed to hear a voice. Save whom? He looked around with blurred eyes—and saw no one but the man he’d been executing.

“Save him?” Will growled. He shouted curses in fury but stopped, realizing Leah’s transformation could only have been caused by his actions. He’d had his revenge, killing the man, again and again, but he had never helped his sister. Never lent her a hand. His mind had been completely distracted by his enemy.

What would’ve happened if he’d been acting like that in real world? If he wouldn’t have been there for Leah when she needed him most?

His thirst for vengeance had distracted him from the goal of rescuing his sister. Will had forgotten her to pursue his revenge.

Wasn’t he forgetting her just the same with his pursuit of money? This thought came to his mind like a cold shower.

  I can’t let that happen!

Chapter 141. The Seed of Time

P utting the monster down carefully, Will slowly started towards the man whose grimace of fear changed to a mocking expression as if this scum were telling Will non-verbally he was too weak to keep doing what he’d done before.

“Hey, rat! I almost raped your sister. I’ll try it again, as many times as it takes to do it. Come on! Save me, and I will do it for you to see. Ahahaha! Come on! Get me up!” This bastard used to beg Will to spare his life before, but now he was provoking the rogue into killing him.

Hearing his words, Will trembled with rage. He wished he could silence this filthy mouth forever with his fist. The cruelty of this challenge was beyond any limits.

Overcoming himself with the willpower he never knew he had, Raven extended a hand and jerked the man up, but…

Hanging down on Will’s right, struggling to keep his grip, was one of the men who tried to rape Leah. And monstrous Leah was hanging down on the left.

  “You… You… No, no, no!”

Looking at his trembling hands, Will got another insight. He realized he’d have to save the bastard just as many times as he’d killed him.

And his sister would keep hanging on her hands while he’d be rescuing this scum.

  “I… I can’t.”

Enervated, he sunk to the ground when the rapist’s voice came again: “Come on! Come on, baby, come on. Let your brother see as I make you a woman. Hey, you! Look here! Watch me fuck your pretty sister! When I’m done, I’ll cut her to pieces and feed her to the dogs… No, to the pigs!”

“You fucking piece of shit!” Once again, Will was on the verge of insanity. Never! Never! Like hell he’d rescue him again!

This game had no mute option. He could not escape hearing filthier and filthier words coming from the scumbag’s mouth.

I killed him several hundred times. Now I must save him just as many.

“What fucking game is that?” Will plodded to the man who kept insulting him and his sister to jerk him up once again.

The rogue was saying aloud everything that crossed his mind to drown the rapist’s speech. When he started to think he could put up with that, the system landed a final blow.

Pulling the bastard up, Raven saw his sister fall and hit the ground.

Dozens and dozens of times… he saw her fall and get killed by the impact, hearing the sneering comments of the man he was saving.

He tried to close his eyes, but the system wouldn’t let him do that. He turned away, but the sound of her bones breaking seemed to be amplified and brought right into his ears by a hostile will.

Then her human appearance was restored. But before Will could embrace her virtual image, he was back to the hall.

  “Has your answer changed?”

  “You can fuck off.”

  “Your answer?”

“You know it. But I can repeat it?”

“Your answer to my question, messenger!”

“You!” Will spat, glaring at the residual mind. Barely managing to calm himself down, he replied: “We are those who can use your power to help others when no one else can. We are immortal, so we can right all our wrongs, coming to this world, again and again.”

“Correct, White Raven. You’ve completed the challenge. You prevailed over yourself, enduring exactly what I once had. The last part was the hardest. Rescuing those you can’t forgive… Vengeance is the power that can destroy worlds. Don’t you think so?”

“Vengeance is a fucking spade digging a grave for us and all our close ones. I agree this spade can dig a grave for the whole world just the same.”

“You’ve realized it. Although through much pain and suffering.”

At last it was over. Raven sat on the floor, leaning against the wall and looking down, his snake hair creeping slowly over his shoulders. Will was not going to ask the residual mind any questions to get another quest; all he wanted was to leave this place and exit the game. The sooner, the better. It was all he could think about.

“You are the first messenger who visited this place. You are wonderful. I watched you complete the challenge, and now I have a question.”

  “Ask.”

“Do you want to visit another world?”

  “Is it far?”

  “Very.”

“What do you need me to bring? The Stone of Life?”

“The Stone of Life?” For the first time, he seemed to hear interest in her voice. “Who asked you for it?”

  “Zal’Sscar.”

“Oh. That girl. No, I don’t need her stone. That’s her obsession, not mine. I want a different thing.”

  Will said nothing.

  “The Seed of Time.”

“Jeez. What’s that?” Will moaned. He couldn’t wait to be sent back.

“Find it. Bring it to the Praying Giant Mountain on this floor.”

“Okay, but I have a question too. How do you residual minds know what floor you are on? The world was separated after you were put in tablets. How do you do that?”

“We are not locked in here. We have our means for observing the outside world. Do you accept the quest?”

“Where will I have to go?”

“Floor 56. It has a space gap between the spear-like mountain and the sky-piercing tree. Through this gap, you will reach the Farimikhor world. What to do next is up to you.”

“See you, messenger.” The woman waved a hand, and Will was back on the lake’s shore. Glancing around, he saw many players apparently waiting for him.

“Um… I see.” Closing his eyes, Will exited the game, leaving the RD clan confusedly staring at where he’d just been.

Exiting the game was as fast as five seconds for players not engaged in combat. That was the feature Will now appreciated most.

“Sleep…” Drained of his mental strength, Will almost fell out of his capsule. Wobbling to his bed, he collapsed on it, falling asleep right away.

The next day was sure to become his day off.
