by Oliver Davies

“Really?” Liam’s eyebrows shot up, and I grinned at the hopeful look he sent his dad.

Douglas chuckled, looking relieved to have his son excited about any part of moving.

“I’m sure we can find some room in the budget for some surfing lessons,” he said with a smile.

“Or someone could get a job of his own,” I prompted gently, raising an eyebrow at Liam.

“Yeah, I can do it, Dad,” Liam said, a hint of stubborn pride working its way into his voice. Douglas and I shared an amused look.

“I know you can, kiddo. C’mon, let’s leave Mr and Mrs Mitchell to their anniversary, hm?”

“Bye,” Liam said weakly, waving to us as they headed off.

Sam and I stood at the door to watch them go. It felt like the end of something for us, but I knew it was only the beginning for Liam. He’d love Devon once he got used to the idea, I was sure. The lad was too curious, too smart and determined to let something like a new town dent his enthusiasm and ambition for long.

“Well, what do you want to do with the rest of the afternoon?” Sam asked as we closed the door and stepped back into the house.

“Not much afternoon left now,” I said wryly before leaning over to kiss her gently. “But what’s left, I want to spend with you.”

“You’ve always been such a sap,” she said, smiling at me.

She took my hand, and we made our way out to the back garden. The clouds overhead were dark and threatening, but we’d sit outside together until the rain came down.
