  Blurb

  Maverick Knox

After waking up alone and naked in a hotel room, Maverick is at a loss as to what happened the night before. All he knows is he’s mated. He starts to search for his mate with the little he recalls and quickly becomes frustrated when his search produces nothing. But he’s not going to give up and vows to find the man who has taken over his every waking thought.

  Alexis Silver

After meeting and spending a beautiful night with a handsome werewolf, Alexis wakes up the next morning and instantly freaks out. He leaves after doing something that could get him in trouble with the heads of the witches and warlock council. It isn’t until later Alexis realizes the werewolf won't be out of his life so quickly, as he is mated to the man.

Both Alexis and Maverick feel they’re not ready for the responsibility mating brings to the table. And they’re confident they’re not prepared to become parents. But there is nothing they can do when fate intervenes, giving them what they think they’re not ready to have.

Nothing can stop fate, no matter how hard you try.

  Chapter One

  Maverick

Maverick Knox stood at the window of his office in the high rise building of Knox Corp— deep in thought.

Maverick looked down at the people who would look like ants to most, but with his werewolf eyesight he was able to make out some of their faces. He sighed and shook his head realizing they were going about their business, which was something he himself should be doing.

But his mind was on other things. He crossed his arms over his chest and leaned against the window sill and looked away from the people to watch the snowfall blanketing the rooftops of the buildings across from him.

It was the start of the holiday season, but he wasn't feeling the joy his friends and family were experiencing during this time of the year. His mother, Viktoria, had their family home decorated like Santa's warehouse threw up in it.

He was happy she hadn’t gotten to his home yet, like she already had with his brothers. Maverick was the oldest of five boys from their German mother and American father, Maximillian. She doted on all five of them as if they were still newborns, and not the alpha and omega males they were.

Five years ago, Maverick's father stepped down as alpha of their pack and handed the reins over to him. Maximillian was a wonderful father, and in turn, it had made him a great alpha. But he was a bit old fashioned in both aspects. Maximillian had expected a lot from Maverick and his brothers growing up. Being the children of the pack alpha, they were supposed to set a proper example to all the werewolves their age.

They were expected to have good grades in school, not drink or smoke, and most of all no sex until they were eighteen. Of course, Maverick and his brothers followed the rules to a certain extent, but once their hormones kicked in, nothing was holding them back from indulging in their sexual desires.

Once Maverick had taken over the pack, he’d relaxed a few of the rules making him a favorite among the younger pack members. He'd also appointed his brothers as his betas and enforcers of the pack. Being the only wolf pack in the state of Rhode Island, the Knox pack was immense. He and his brothers had started Knox Corp. a couple of years before he’d taken over the pack.

The company had become intertwined with the pack, something Maverick and his brothers hadn't foreseen. The majority of the pack members worked for the company in one capacity or another. It wasn't a requirement that members worked for their company—things simply worked out that way.

Maverick and his brothers invested their time and inheritance into building the company from the ground up. Knox Corp. had its hand in everything from information technology, fashion, restaurants, even television and movies. Especially movies.

Despite their difference in ages, Maverick was close to his brothers. Their parents made sure that not only did they play well together, but they also learned to fight well together. Maverick became their protector and their leader at a very young age, which carried into adulthood.

Maverick groaned as thoughts of his parents came to his mind. After being married and mated for so long, they were still completely in love with each other. He supposed that was what happened after finding the one who was a part of your soul. According to his parents, a mating was never wrong when fate was involved, no matter how many times the mated pair disagreed with each other.

Maverick had always longed for the same life, love, and respect his parents continued to show and have for each other. One day, Maverick hoped to cherish his mate the same way Maximillian did with Viktoria—as if she was a valued jewel made only for him and no one else.

So, how come you let your mate get away? Asked the voic
e in his head.

That is because I didn't know he was my mate at the time, Maverick chastised himself.

"Great. Now, I'm fucking answering myself."

Maverick knew it was his subconscious kicking him in the ass for allowing the man to get away. But what was he supposed to do when he woke up to an empty bed and no memory of what happened? He tried telling himself that if he hadn't gotten so shit-faced, he would have remembered what happened that night.

  But it was no use.

Maverick turned away from the window and dropped down in the chair in behind his desk. He looked at the ring, which hid the mating mark on his finger. A little over three months ago, he'd woken up in the hotel room naked with a head-splitting hangover and a mating mark on his finger and no memory of how he got to the hotel or who he was with. Maverick had honestly freaked the fuck out.

Hell, who wouldn’t in a situation like that?

Like all shifters, he knew he'd find his mate one day. But Maverick wasn't looking for a mate. He knew he was a cocky son of a bitch, rich, and handsome, with a great single life, and certainly wasn't ready to share his time with anyone. He had a string of lovers who were ready to devote their all to him, but he wasn’t looking for a commitment.

He knew the responsibilities that came with having a mate. The thought of being shackled down to one person for the rest of his life when he was so young scared the shit out of him. Once he’d time to think—he hated to admit that although he felt he wasn’t ready. Fate, on the other hand, thought it was time he settled down with his mate.

A mate he found and lost in one night.

He was exhausted and frustrated by the whole thing, but most of all ashamed of how things happened. Which was why he hadn’t told anyone in his family he’d found his life partner. Maverick was sure his parents would be ecstatic when he explained everything. They’ve wanted him to find his mate and continue their bloodline. His brothers would laugh their asses off that he’d finally fucked up on something.

I need to find him. I can’t keep going on like this.

For the past few months, the only thing Maverick could remember about his mate was his ink-black eyes and black hair. Maverick couldn't understand how he'd gotten so drunk he'd forgotten what should be one of the most important nights in his life. He might be a werewolf and have a fast metabolism, but shifters could get inebriated with the right amount of alcohol.

Since he’d woken up mated, Maverick wondered if his mate was a supernatural. Were-creatures were not the only ones that existed. Vampires, Fey, and other Supernaturals blended within the world for centuries. Shifters recognized each other by their scents, although there were a few supernaturals who knew how to hide their smell and appearances.

  Could it be a warlock?

Maverick fingered the tribal tattoo on his ring finger, imagining his mate doing the same to his matching mark. He was confident his mate was a man. Maverick knew years ago he was attracted to men and not women. His parents didn't care. All they wanted were grandchildren. He needed to provide heirs to the betterment of the pack.

What if he's pregnant? Gods, where the fuck could he be?

Maverick had been searching for his mate for months and wasn't having any positive results. He'd hired one of the best private investigators, and the man couldn't even find the man’s name. He placed the ring back on his finger and sighed, leaning back in his chair. Not being able to find his mate was affecting his life. He was hiding things from his family and missing meetings because he couldn't keep things together.

Maverick had to learn to control his emotions daily as he tried not to get angry at the littlest things. He rubbed his temples, hoping to stave off the headache that was coming. It’d been happening to him every day since he’d woken up with the tattoo on his finger.

"This is why I wasn't ready to find my fucking mate." Maybe he would be thinking differently if the man had stayed around to talk.

There was a knock at his office door. "Come in," he yelled back then winced, clutching his pounding head.

Usually, Maverick would sit in a dark room for a few minutes and wait for the headache to pass. He could not wait to find his mate—the first thing he would do was his spank his pretty little ass red if he was the one responsible as to why he couldn’t remember much of anything from that night. He looked up when Matthus, his beta and Vice President of Knox Corp. walked into his office.

  "What's up?" Maverick asked.

Instead of speaking, Matthus threw a file on his desk and smiled.

Maverick picked it up and noticed it was a signed contract with C. A. Silver. It was a small up and coming IT company he knew would fit perfectly well into Knox Corp. They'd been after the company for months. But each time they met, one of the CEO's were against signing on with them no matter how sweet they made the deal.

"What changed their mind?" Maverick asked, putting the file down.

"Honestly, I have no fucking idea," Matthus answered. "We weren't even twenty minutes into the meeting before they agreed to our terms."

  "They?"

"Yeah. We met with both CEOs. Who are brothers, by the way."

"Brothers?" Maverick asked, confused. "Nothing in our research said they were brothers. That’s interesting."

Matthus shrugged his shoulders. "They don't look alike, but Cullen kept referring to him as his brother."

"Well, who cares," Maverick said. "We got the deal, and now we own them. We should celebrate."

  "Really? Celebrate," Matthus said.

Maverick didn't miss the sarcasm in his tone.

"What the fuck is up with you?"

"Shouldn't I be the one to ask you that? Are you ready to tell me what the hell is going on with you?"

Maverick got up from his desk. He looked back out of the window and saw the snow was coming down much heavier. "Nothing is going on with me."

"Hör auf, mich anzulügen, Maverick," Matthus snapped. "You’ve been withdrawn from us for the past three months."

"I am not lying to you," Maverick said, not looking at his brother. They could always tell when each other was lying about something. "And I have not been withdrawn." He turned when his office door opened, and his four other brothers walked in.

"I hear we got the C. A. Silver account," Misha, their youngest brother, said. He looked at Maverick and then at Matthus, who was glaring at him.

"All right, What the fuck did you do, Mat?" Misha asked.

"Knowing Mat, he got tired of Mav pretending he could hide something from us," Marius, their middle brother, added.

"I thought we were going to wait to ask him about that?" Marcus, their fourth brother, asked.

"When have you known Matthus to wait on anything?" Marius asked.

Maverick looked at his brothers, wondering when they had time to sit around and gossip about him.

"You might as well tell us now," Misha said. Misha was always the peacemaker among them. "I don't know what Mat said, but you have been acting a bit odd. We planned on giving you your space. But when you missed today's meeting, we decided it was time we talked with you."

  Wait, what meeting?

He knew Matthus was meeting with C. A. Silver, but he thought his calendar was clear for the day. Maverick walked back over to his desk and brought up his schedule, quickly scrolling through it.

  Fuck.

Highlighted in red was his three o'clock meeting with Jackson Edge, of Edge Construction.

Maverick's head was not in the game, and he needed to get his shit together. He’d a lot of people depending on him. He stood, looking at his brothers. Maybe telling his brothers would help. All his efforts had come up with nothing.

"I found my mate," he blurted out.

His office was quiet for a second before Matthus spoke up. "From the look on your face, I am guessing it’s not a good thing?"

"You guys know I'm not ready for a mate."

"Please don't tell me you rejected them," Misha said. "Oh gods, is it a woman?" His eyes widened
in fear at his question.

Maverick chuckled at his younger brother. "No, it’s neither of those," he answered.

"Then what is it?" Misha asked, sitting down in a chair in front of his desk.

"I can't remember anything about him. Or our night together." Again, silence washed over the room.

"Are you sure you’re mated?" Marcus asked, breaking the silence in his office.

Maverick took off his ring and showed them his mating tattoo as an answer.

  “Yup, you’re mated,” Marius said.

"You're going to have to explain to us, but please leave out the sex. I really don't want to know how my big brother gets down between the sheets," Marcus interjected.

Maverick sighed and sat in his chair and started from what he could remember. "It was the night we met with Kilpatrick Corp. I was pissed that we didn’t get the account." The brothers nodded their heads in understanding. "Anyway, to blow off some steam I went to Chuck's for a drink or two. I have to say that place has gotten a lot better, by the way, since the new ownership. He got rid of that asshole bartender, too."

"You're going off-topic, Mav," Matthus told him.

Maverick rolled his eyes, leaning back in his chair.

"Anyway, I was at the bar talking with the new bartender, James. He must have seen how upset I was because my first order of whiskey was on the house. Now, here is the strange thing, the whiskey was not the usual watered-down crap they always served. This whiskey was rich in color and flavor. The first sip burned my throat, but I brushed it off cause I needed to forget about that fucking meeting. I think it was after the third glass is when I realized I was drunk and would need to call a cab, but first I wanted to know where they got the whiskey. I remembered James went to get the new owner. We talked for a few minutes, which we had a lot in common. He was nothing to look at, so I didn’t try to flirt with him or try to get him into my bed. When I got up to leave, I swayed and the owner whose name I still cannot remember caught me before I hit the floor. He walked me outside. Here is where it gets dicey, I cannot remember getting into a cab. The only thing I know is I woke up the next morning with a pounding headache and mated. And fucking alone."
