Fabulous. The hottest guy in town and I managed to turn him into a monk. The females in town would lynch me.
“Are you sure, Daniel?” I asked. “This seems like a major epiphany. Maybe it’s just a phase. I mean, you can still contribute to the community without being celibate.”
Please don’t be celibate or I might throw myself off this cliff.
He leaned forward and, for one miraculous moment, I thought he was going to kiss me. My wish was about to come true! I closed my eyes and felt his lips brush…against my forehead.
Oh.
He rubbed his hands together excitedly. “Sunset’s over. Are you ready to go home?”
I nodded, unable to bring myself to speak. I didn’t want my emotions to betray me. Not now when he seemed so full of joy and possibility. How could I ruin it for him? Anyway, we’d only recently met. I was sure my feelings for him were fleeting. After all, he was the first angel I’d ever met. The novelty was sure to wear off and I’d start to be annoyed by his flaws. He probably picked his teeth with his fingernails. That was sufficiently unattractive. Yes, let’s go with that.
I clasped my fingers around his neck and held on tightly. I tried to ignore the feel of his strong arms around me. I didn’t need Daniel to be my boyfriend, right? It would be enough to have him as a friend, to help guide me through this new chapter in my life.
As we flew back over Spellbound toward the house, I began to relax and enjoy the ride. This was what Sedgwick did every day—flew back and forth across town. If he could do it, then so could I. Sedgwick was an unexpected surprise. To be fair, everything about this town was an unexpected surprise. I thought of all the wonderful and interesting inhabitants I’d met and looked forward to meeting those I hadn’t. By the time Daniel lowered me to the front porch, I felt a renewed sense of hope.
“I’ll see you tomorrow,” Daniel said. “I’ll bring you coffee at the office at nine.”
“Make it nine-thirty,” I said. “I’m sleeping in tomorrow.”
I flung open the door and went inside. “Gareth,” I called. “I’m home.”
