As I watch Luna flounce off, I feel quite shocked. I never really thought she would feel like that. She always knew I was a player. I mean, the rumors are true and there have been many women before her, but not anymore—ever.
I walk toward my favorite place, the edge of the hill where I can look over the town. Before Luna, I was only happy with a woman to satisfy my physical needs. Luna is different. She challenges me mentally and the love I have for her makes the physical side of our relationship so much more.
I think of the children’s mothers. All of them served a purpose, except for one. Caleb’s mom was the first and the only one I ever thought I loved. I didn’t fight for her though and was left wondering what might have been. Now I know why. I was waiting for Luna and that’s why she is the only woman I have ever fought for. Surely, she knows that.
My thoughts are interrupted by the gentle purring of a motorbike gaining in volume as it draws near. Here comes the next visitor, and the guilt hits me as it usually does. Ash, my son and the one with no mother and a part-time father. Forced to live with his uncle after a deal made many years ago. He has reason to hate me the most and holds it inside him, giving nothing away.
I walk toward him and note the stiffening of his body as he sees me coming. I smile and nod toward the bike.
“She’s running well.” He just nods and as usual, I hug him and feel him tense at the contact. They know I’m not being affectionate. I hug them all for a reason and they hate it. I download everything I need to know from them from their soul. They can hide nothing from me and I need to see they are on the right path. Even though they are away from me for most of the year, I expect them to uphold the strict standards I’ve set in place. They mustn’t use their power for self-fulfillment and have learned from the books I expect them to read every day. Luckily for them, they have the power to absorb every word on a page which frustrates their teachers who they challenge at every turn.
I walk with him toward the house. “How’s your uncle Jake?”
He shrugs. “Usual. Making me do his dirty work while he reaps the rewards. You know, much the same as I do here.”
I push down the irritation his words cause me. Yes, I expect them to learn their craft when they visit. It’s the perfect opportunity and they don’t have an easy time here. I put them all to work in order to learn a valuable lesson. It doesn’t make me popular but I can’t help that.
As we head inside, Caleb pushes past Ash on his way out. No words are spoken and I feel the anger growing. I say sharply, “Caleb, at least have the decency to greet your brother.”
Ash looks even angrier at the thought of having to say two words to his brother and I sigh inside. When will this ever end?
Caleb sneers. “Welcome to Hell, little bro. Now if you don’t mind, I’ve got a hot date who’s much better looking than any of you. Don’t wait up.”
He stalks off and Ash seizes his chance and heads off without me. Before he can reach the staircase to hide out in his room like they all do, I hear Luna say excitedly.
“Oh my god, look at you. Now don’t tell me, you must be Ash. I’m Luna, honey, your father’s latest girlfriend.”
She flashes me a pointed look and I smile inside.
Ash just nods but she doesn’t let him get away so easily. Linking her arm in his, she says softly.
“Come on, honey, I’ve made you a sandwich. I know how hungry you boys get so I won’t take no for an answer. Come and tell me everything about yourself.”
I watch them head off and laugh softly. These kids won’t know what’s hit them this summer if I know the woman I am crazy in love with.

Luna
I think I’m mentally exhausted. I always thought I wanted a family, but this is nothing like I thought it’d be. They absolutely hate each other! They look at me as the latest gullible female to fall victim to their father’s charms and think I’m stupid as a result.
I don’t actually mind about that. It takes away any threat they may feel with me around and I’ve always been happy to be disregarded and ignored while I take it all in. Nobody expects much sense to come from my mouth and that’s always been fine with me. You can learn a lot about people when their defenses are down and these kids, for all their power, are as clueless as their father about humanity.
It must be close to dinner time before the last house guest arrives. Unlike the others, he walks in unannounced and throws his keys on the table. He looks around him with an air of boredom and smirks at the sullen faces looking at him with hostility.
“Great to see you all—not!”
He turns and looks at me with interest and smiles with a bad boy’s wicked gleam in his eyes. “You’re a sight for sore eyes, darlin’. I’m Lucas and you are…?”
I smile sweetly. “Luna. I’m super excited to meet you, Lucas. Your father ‘s told me lots about you.”
As I mention him, Dev appears from his den and smiles. “Late, as usual, son.”
He hugs him and I see the irritation on Lucas’s face before he winks at me over his father’s shoulder.
I stifle a giggle as I see the wicked gleam in his eye. Lucas is more like his father in that department than the rest of them.
He has black hair that sits longer than the others making him look like a rock star. He also wears a leather jacket and jeans which appears to be their trademark look and has the Knight devilish looks. Dev looks at him and frowns.
“Hands off my girl, Lucas. If you know what’s good for you.”
Lucas just laughs and I notice that the other kids’ grin, obviously enjoying the fact their brother is so successful in winding their father up.
I roll my eyes. “Don’t be ridiculous, Dev. Lucas is just playing with you. Honestly, for somebody so clever you can be so blinkered sometimes.”
The kids look at me in surprise and I see Dev smile slightly. I clap my hands and beam around me.
“Well, this is awesome. I can’t believe you’re all here. This house is so empty most of the time and it’s great to see it become a home at last. I’ve made us a welcome home meal and I hope this summer will be the best ever.”
I don’t miss the amusement in the kid’s eyes as they think they are in the presence of an idiot. As I turn to dish up the meal, Dev comes close and whispers, “You’re a clever woman, you know that don’t you?”
I smile softly. “Shh, don’t let my secret out. They must never suspect a thing.”
After the most awkward meal of my life, I watch the last one of the children quickly head off to bed. As families go, this one is the strangest I have ever come across. I think I spoke non-stop for the whole meal and got silence in return.
Occasionally, Dev would demand an answer but it was obvious nobody felt like talking. The boys just ate and looked bored. The twins chatted to one another about their plans and froze Scarlett out. Scarlett just ate and looked down at her plate for most of the time.
I start to tidy everything away and Dev says softly, “Thanks, honey.”
I turn to face him and see the love shining from his eyes as he holds out his hand.
“Come, leave that, let’s take a walk.”
I feel my pulse quicken as it always does when I take his hand. This man affects me in so many ways and even just one touch is all it takes to make my world complete.
We walk outside and as I feel the cooler air, I shiver. Dev places his arm around me and draws me close and instantly the chill is gone. This is what I love best. The moments we are together with nobody else around. The time we spend together is the most precious in the world and I’m at my happiest when he holds my hand in his and squeezes it tightly.
As we walk, I appreciate the silence and the healing light of the moon. All we hear are the sounds of the night going about its business and I feel content and happy.
Dev laughs softly as we walk to his favorite place overlooking the town.
“So, as families go, this one is quite exceptional,
wouldn’t you say?”
I grin. “Well, it’s certainly different I’ll give you that.”
He smiles. “Thank you, Luna. I know that was a difficult evening for you. The kids are self-centered and hard to crack. I’ve long since stopped trying to work them out. I’m sure they’ll come good in the end.”
Turning to face him, I frown and note the amusement in his eyes.
I raise my eyes. “I hope you’re just joking with me to get a reaction, Dev because that statement was your most stupid yet. How can you just leave your kids’ future happiness to chance? They need guidance and love to grow into fine human beings. Not everyone gets the life they have and the riches they enjoy. I’m not talking about the material wealth either. Those kids have a loving parent who wants what’s best for them. That costs nothing but hard work and tears. It’s your responsibility to show them the way and guide them along the right path. Not everyone gets that in a parent, I should know.”
His eyes flash with amusement and something else. He pulls me close and looks deep into my eyes. I see the love shining out at me and sigh with contentment.
He whispers, “I love you, Luna, more than Heaven and Hell. I made a promise to love and protect you for eternity and will take the greatest pleasure doing so. Together we will shape those kids into the strong adults they will become. But we will do it together and with purpose. Then, when the last one of them is settled, we will have a lifetime together. I promise you with all my heart—I will never stop trying to make your heart happy and your soul sing. I want to see the laughter in your eyes and drive any pain away. I want to give you the stars and expect nothing in return. I want to make you happy, Luna because if you are then I have all the riches in the world. You are my destiny and I yours for eternity. Nothing can ever change that and I just want you to know I don’t take this lightly. I will never stop working at making you never regret the choice you made and you hold my heart in your hands because, without you, I am nothing.”
My eyes fill with tears as he lowers his lips to mine. As we kiss in the light of the moon, I have never felt happier in my life. I am with the man I love, the man I desire and the man who is my heartbeat, the blood in my veins and the protector of my soul. He is my soul mate.
The End.
