Fletcher( Boys of HGU #1) Page 21

by Victoria McFarlane

I would never have believed it possible.

That hole I’ve had in my soul is gone, patched up and mended by the love Peyton is showing me. She understands and there’re days where I fall into the trap of thinking too hard about us. About them before. She’s patient.

She gets me. She knows what I need.

And I truly believe she’s it.

Everyone has that one person. Their person.

She was mine. She always had been.

I stand from the ground, looking down at my brothers final resting place and take a clean breath, all those shadows and nightmares slipping away.

My hand touches the very top of the stone as I turn away.

  “Until we meet again, brother.”

  Epilogue

What do you do when everything you’ve worked so fucking hard for is threatened?

Well you plan your fight. You prepare for battle.

I’ve gone through too much shit in my life to let some pretty girl with a laptop rip it all to shreds.

My past is my past for a reason. I don’t want it dug into and brought to light and I’m prepared to do just about anything to keep it where it belongs.

I watch her as she crosses the library, her bag slung over her shoulder, her dark hair bouncing against her shoulders. Cocking my head I watch the way her hips sway side to side, a hypnotizing motion that for a moment makes me forget she’s the enemy right now.

Grey eyes and a plump mouth aren’t enough to let down my defenses.

“Hi Vincent,” she chimes, a smile meant to disarm me pulls at those damn kissable lips and I almost startle at the use of my first name instead of my last, “I’m Demi, I know we’ve met before but those circumstances were a little wild so how about we start again.”

I ignore the outstretched hand and lean back in the chair, crossing my arms and levelling my glare on her, “How about we just cut to the chase, your place or mine?”

Her nostrils flare and eyes narrow, “I can assure you, Mr Decker, that is never going to happen.”

I grin, my charm had gotten me far in life and a little bit of manipulation right now was going to get me a long way. I just need her under my thumb, if I control that, I control how much dirt she digs up and that story she writes about me, it’ll be glowing.

“Never say never, sweetheart,” I lean in, “But if a little bit of chit chat is what you need then take a seat, Miss Atwood, let’s talk.”

For a brief moment I see nerves in the lines of her face but she’s quick to mask the emotion, folding herself down into the chair and settling her laptop on top.

“So tell me, Mr Decker, what is it you’re trying to hide behind this playboy exterior?”

Much like I did, she levels her glare and holds my stare.

Peyton had warned me how quickly she can read people, see past whatever it is they’re using as a defense.

  But it doesn’t deter me.

  This is game on.

  And I always win.
