“He is, but I believe he’s improving. He’ll be up and about soon. There’s nothing to worry about. Come on; let’s get this show on the road.”
They left the kitchen and walked along the path to the church.
Dad gave her a loving look. “This is the perfect day to get married, and the perfect place. Your mum and I are thinking about moving here. What do you think about that? Would you want us so near?”
“I would love it! When are you moving? I know which houses might be up for sale soon.”
A holly blue bay butterfly appeared out of nowhere and hovered inches from Daisy’s nose as if inspecting her. Then it turned around, headed for her dad, and landed gently on his nose.
Daisy burst out laughing. The noise made the butterfly shoot away. Her dad started to laugh too. They were both still laughing as they entered the church.
Dad whispered to her, “Shh. This is a serious ceremony.” He winked at her and then let out a snort of uncontrollable laughter.
Daisy’s nerves had completely vanished by the time she walked down the aisle with her dad. As she glanced left and right, she saw the pews were packed with residents of the town. Those residents were now dear friends. She’d received a lot of help and support from them during the last year, and now the town was benefiting from the things they’d done. It seemed like each person here had their own story to tell about the changes the town had gone through. She glanced at the front pews and her heart lifted at the sight of her friends who had made the journey from London to be here. She was glad she’d kept in touch with them.
She was taken out of her musings by the handsome face of the man who was waiting at the end of the aisle. She’d never seen Jacob look so handsome. Marrying him felt so right.
In front of Jacob, Reverend Pendleton was smiling broadly; his smile was as bright as the sunlight coming through the stained glass windows behind him.
As she stood next to Jacob, he leaned over and whispered, “You look amazing.”
“Thanks. So do you. Are you ready to do this?”
“We can’t start until my best man arrives.”
“I thought you weren’t having one. Who is he?”
Jacob turned his head and smiled at someone behind him. “He’s here now.”
Daisy turned around and saw Malcolm padding along the aisle. His fur had been brushed and a cushion had been tied around his neck. As he came closer, Daisy saw the cushion had been embroidered with holly blue butterflies. Nestling amongst the butterflies were two gold rings.
Daisy gave Jacob a wobbly smile and her eyes stung at the happy sight of Malcolm coming towards them. “You told me he was poorly.”
“I lied.”
“My dad said he was poorly too.”
Jacob shrugged. “He lied too. We had to. We wanted this to be a surprise for you. Shall we get married now?”
“Just a minute.” Daisy tapped the side of her leg. Malcolm trotted over to her and rested his head against her leg. Daisy smiled at Jacob. “I’m ready to marry you now.”
