“This is not looking good,” Cecily said, not taking her eyes off of the demon.

“I got this,” I said with confidence, trusting my abilities.

Edward cast Whirlwind, completing a successful spell attack. 12(+8).

  Spell: Whirlwind

  School: Evocation

  Skill Level: 5th-Level

Effect: Cyclone 30 feet tall and 15 feet wide. The raging wind moves through the air, along the ground, zigzagging by the caster’s direction. When the Whirlwind comes in contact with a spell, a reflex save must be successfully thrown or counter damage will be yielded by the caster of the spell.

I summoned a circling vortex of air that created a funnel cloud on the surface of the sea. The cyclone zeroed in right on the demon. The whirling windstorm pulled the demon down into the sea.

As it plunged downward, Hamon shouted, “The rest of you, cast Lightning Bolt.”

Cecily, Walter, and Yves all shouted, “Fulgur percutier!”

Cecily, Walter, and Yves cast Lightning Bolt, completing a successful spell attack.

Bolts of lightning emerged from their palms and struck the Whirlwind plunged it to the sea. The demon wailed in pain as the three lightning bolts of electrical energy charred its purpled flesh, the demon turning black as it neared the surface of the water.

The demon made a successful Constitution save.

Just before the demon general was about to hit the water, it was able to counter the downward force of the funnel cloud and propelled itself right at our ship. It came right for us but was instantly stopped by the curved shield. It splashed on the transparent-blue field of energy that protected our boat, its black blood leaving marks as it fell into the sea.

While the body of the demon general floated on the surface of the water, Balfomeir cast a net out and captured the Hell beast. To pull in the beast with the wings with a span as long as they were was no small feat. The entire crew aboard Balfomeir’s ship pulled in the net, the body of the still living but vastly incapacitated demon, foot by foot. This demon was Belzberg, a high-ranking demon general in the Demon Lord’s army. The ship that Belzberg boarded had left sunk, and the men were left to fend for themselves. Some made it back to shore, some drown, and some were pulled aboard the neighboring vessels. The way I looked at it, it was a small price to pay for the sovereignty of Arne and the surrounding towns and villages.

As we watched the demon slowly being pulled toward Balfomeir’s ship, Hamon said, “This is a surprising turn of events.”

“Oh?” I asked, not realizing that he was so surprised that we had taken down a high-ranking demon in Abraxas’ army. I was under the impression that this happened all of the time. “Weren’t you expecting this outcome?” I asked.

“No, not at all. I only agreed to help Balfomeir because at one time he saved my life, decades and decades ago. If it came down to it, I would make sure that you guys were safe, but I would go down with the ship so to speak along with Balfomeir. You see, once you owe a debt, you always owe a debt, no matter how many times you repay it. I stand here today because of Balfomeir, and although I have helped him, had come to his rescue, and have gotten him out of some precarious situations, he saved me first, and because of that I have spent the rest of my life paying him back.”

I was shocked to find that Hamon and Balfomeir’s relationship had gone on for so long and had been so close. Seemed like Hamon had a love/hate relationship with Balfomeir, and was sometimes annoyed by his antics, this being one of them. However, I could tell by the way Hamon referenced Balfomeir that there was a deep respect and love that they shared. They were brothers.

Balfomeir’s crew had pulled the demon general aboard their ship and we watched as the crew then tied him up. Hamon said to me, “Ed, this is the first time that the Demon Lord’s army had ever lost.”

I thought about what Hamon had said and realized that as I kept learning the undiscovered spells and progressing my magic that the destiny that lay before me would be complete. I would have to keep up with my discipline, taking risks, and relying on the abilities I had gained. Most of all, I had to lean on the relationships that I had developed along the way. My friends and Hamon were the reason why I stood here aboard this vessel as we witnessed for the first time the capture of a demon.

“Well, I guess this is a turning point for us,” I replied. “We are finally on the offensive.”
