Demon Underground: Kyra Bell Book Three Page 17

One of the press shouted out, “It sounds like you have your personal opinion decided already, Mr. President.”

The president shook his head, “I do have my doubts, which is why I took the step of forcing our nation into neutrality temporarily. However, I will not compound a past error made in haste by my predecessor and congress, by doing the same thing. The facts will out, I promise you that.”

Another shouted, “But it’s a little self-serving of the half demons, is it not. Of course they protest their innocence, the jails are full of people that do.”

The president took a deep breath, and replied casually, “I’ve recently had the opportunity to look on their website, half-demon community website. Did you know four years ago one of the strongest arguments the supernatural councils used to stay independent from us, to set up an independent nation within our own similar to the Native Americans, was that our justice system couldn’t work for them. Our prisons couldn’t hold them, our judges and juries could be beguiled by magic, and it would just never work.

“So we gave them autonomy, which of course led to them maintaining the absolute power over their people they’d enjoyed for centuries in the past. Imagine my shock, when I looked at their website, and it turns out a simple enchantment could make a supernatural as weak as a human. That they could be controlled by our system, and they could live under the same laws. That every law broken by a supernatural didn’t have to lead to death. Do you know one of the first decisions of the half-demon council after their recent formation was to abolish the death penalty, and they have hopes to be integrated with our laws and society. To use our jails and integrate with our justice system.

“So in short, Gabe. The half demons starting an apocalypse isn’t the only lie we’ve caught the councils in recently, just the most outrageous one. I’m keeping an open mind, chances are the truth of things will fall somewhere in between the rhetoric of both, no doubt half-demons can be extremely dangerous, but every bit of data we’ve gotten the last few months once Kyra Bell stopped hiding and started fighting, contradicts what we were told four years ago.”

William squeezed me, “You’re famous now.”

  Celeste smirked.

The president said, “One more question, Carl?” as he pointed at one of the reporters.

Carl asked, “What will be done, if congress finds against the Nephilim councils?”

The president said, “That’s up to congress, and how they proceed. I believe this will be a non-partisan effort, as the supporters and naysayers in this issue are not divided on party lines. I may have some suggestions, but ultimately I’m here to enforce the law, not make it. If the laws and treaty are overturned, we’ll have to see what they put in place. I for one would like to see them integrated and become a part of us.

“Lastly, I would caution everyone not to take the law into your own hands. Human violence against supernaturals has been rising in our country the last few weeks, and that is not acceptable and it is dangerous besides. Kyra herself has named her enemies as the Nephilim and the rest of the councils. The rest according to her are stuck in a bad position. We will get to the bottom of it, and deal with it. Thank you, and God bless America. Good night.”

He waved at the cameras, and the secret service closed around him as he walked out of the room.

Well… holy shit. It was really surreal to hear the President of the United States say your name while addressing the country.

  “I hadn’t expected that.”

Celeste sighed, “She’ll be insufferable now.”

I laughed, and I shot her the bird. Because I was a mature adult I didn’t stick my tongue out.

It wasn’t long after that, when the councils released a statement saying they were a sovereign government and didn’t recognize the president’s authority. Ouch, that was about the dumbest thing they could’ve done for damage control, which meant we had them running scared. All their lies were about to come home to roost, and they knew it.

I never imagined it could happen, or that it would happen this quickly. Plan B was always a long shot, but in that moment, I had real hope that not only would it happen, but also that it wouldn’t take nearly as long as I’d feared.

The humans were pissed, at being manipulated so foully.

It wasn’t a sure thing yet, but it seemed like the writing was on the wall. I wasn’t sure what was going to happen next, exactly, but it’d be a hell of a ride. I could see the end of the genocide of my kind.

I had my love, William, and a very small community that would slowly grow. If not because of demon rapes in the past as others grew up, also as half demons grew up and had children of their own.

The councils, well… the Nephilim digging in their heels was the absolute worst thing they could’ve done.

We also had the community, people to share it with, of my own kind who I didn’t have to fear unreasoning betrayal from. Although, personal betrayal was a real thing, I didn’t doubt my friends.

In short, the future suddenly seemed full of possibilities.

Though, I still wasn’t ready to have those children myself, yet.

It was going to be a hell of a ride. No pun intended…

  ~ Author’s notes ~

  Blessed be.

Thank you for reading the third and final book in the Kyra Bell series.

This was the third book of three planned for this Romance Urban Fantasy. I hope you enjoyed it. It was a little edgier than my usual stuff, and I’m sure you’ve noticed I’m taking a step back from the reverse-harem genre I’ve been writing in the last few series. I hope the ending was satisfying, I tried to tie everything up but an HEA ending just wasn’t in the cards for this series.

Please leave a review if you feel moved to. Independent authors depend on reviews, and it makes more of a difference than you would think. Thank you!

  Other Series by Brittany Rose:

The Taylor Coven Series (A complete seven novella series) – This series is seven he-said she-said Romance Urban Fantasies, all related to the seven witches of the Taylor coven. The books should be read in order. The romances are complete with no cliff hangers, but the urban fantasy plotline advances and spans all seven books.

The Amanda Johnson Series (A complete four full novel series) – This series is an urban fantasy reverse harem romance, that neither stints on the fantasy or the romance. It’s also the start of the universe that the Anise Evans series starts in.

The Anise Evans Series (A complete four full novel series) – This series is an urban fantasy reverse harem romance. It is also a spin-off of the Amanda Johnson series, but can be read independently.

  ~ Book Description ~

Kyra hasn’t had an easy life. She’d hidden for over four years, but it was time to step into the light. Build something lasting, and lay the groundwork for true freedom and an end to the hunts. Of course, some of those she saves, have different ideas on how to go about that.

Her life was about to change again. She needed to take a stand, and balance that against keeping her charges safe. Things don’t go as planned, and the last thing she ever expected was to find love.

To keep it all, she just needed to survive.

Author’s Note: This is a full novel, romance urban fantasy. There are scenes of a mature nature between a man and a woman. This is NOT a RH, like some of my other series. It is also told from first person, from Kyra’s point of view.
