Using the family’s chicken farm in Kent as his headquarters, Mr. Golden maintained the organization’s main files and correlated the information from their multitude of sources. One of the nephews always acted as a focal point by posing as Mr. Golden in London. Whoever was currently in residence at Daffodil House dressed, spoke and employed Mr. Golden’s mannerisms, even when in the company of the few people who shared the secret, using wigs and special make-up to emphasize the strong family resemblance of their features. As Mr. Garfield was in his early thirties, the resemblance had been overlooked by Asquith’s watchers on Monday when he had gone to and left the Public Prosecutor’s Office without his make-up and dressed in the fashion of an up-and-coming young barrister. Once inside, he had changed into the clothes and make-up kept on the premises and allowed himself to be seen as Mr. J. G. Reeder.
Contrary to Mr. Garfield’s fears, Flack had not learned the organization’s secret. Having heard of Captain Gray’s participation with Mr. Golden in the ‘Big Printer’ the old master criminal had arranged for the booby trap to be installed in the flat in case Mr. J. G. Reeder should seek sanctuary there.
76 The coup was so meticulously planned that, realizing it could have succeeded, the Stewards of the Jockey Club asked that the details of it be destroyed. As the Reeders honored the request, only the facts related in this volume remain to supply a suggestion of what was to happen.
77 According to their records, the Reeders suspected that the reticence of Churgwin and Birkstone was partly caused by a desire to see whether Flack’s scheme worked.
78 Although “Cap” Fog and Mr. J. G. Reeder are not involved, some details of Beryl Snowhill’s later career are given in: SACRIFICE FOR THE QUAGGA GOD.
