Elizabeth had employed Vollund to clear away any confusion about this motive for their marriage but quickly found her concerns to be the truth. She had spent the following years in bed with the man who killed her first husband, frantically gathering research to prove the murder.
Juliet had listened with rapt attention as Elizabeth finally told her about her father’s death and apologized for the destruction her grief-stricken actions caused.
She had truly believed marrying as quickly as possible was the best solution. The older woman repeatedly apologized, begging for another chance to show her a parent’s true love.
Juliet had forgiven her. The weight of bearing that kind of toxic relationship would’ve continued to smother her. At least now she could look forward to rebuilding a new relationship with her mother instead of wallowing in the past.
And then, of course, there had been the small matter of her wedding to William. They had plans, big ones, for both Greystone and Mansfield Park, and after he proposed, Juliet had taken the lead on preparing his childhood home for permanent residence again. They would create new memories, happier memories, in the homes they loved.
Nicholas, the Duke, Marian, Robert, Lady Eloise, Lady Catherine, and even a gruff Mr. Bohart had made the trek one snowy day in November to see William Huntington, Marquess of Mansfield Park, marry the Lady Juliet Sonders in the historic chapel at Greystone. Following the heartfelt vows, the Mother-of-the-bride, Elizabeth, threw a wedding feast to put all others to shame.
Juliet had been a stunning bride, deliriously in love with her groom. William had been the picture of masculine beauty, his eyes glued to the dark-haired woman who owned his heart. They had lasted through only the first course at dinner before sneaking back to their rooms, laughing, barely able to keep their hands off each other.
And now, just a few weeks later, they were here, in Mansfield Park, thoroughly wrapped up in each other. In this life, they were creating. Juliet let her devilish fingers trail down William’s bare stomach, feeling his rumbling breath under her cheek as he awoke.
“Wife, you are playing with fire.”
“And what if I am?” Juliet responded playfully, her leg sliding up his so that in a quick shift of her hips, she found herself straddling her husband's torso. Grinding her hips lightly against his, Juliet coaxed a whining groan from his lips.
“Why are you always such an early riser?” William threw one muscular arm over his eyes, feigning anger at her. His other hand followed the line of her body down where he could cup her hip.
“I’m not the only one,” Juliet replied saucily, feeling his body hardening beneath her.
“So crude,” he scolded, rolling her onto his back and under his body. Nose to nose, William stared down at his beloved wife. The woman who challenged everything he thought about love. And who had given him a future he secretly craved by erasing the pain of the past.
Juliet kissed him softly, feeling his fingers trail down her form to rest just above her belly button. Her belly was still flat, taunt, but he rested his hand there as if he could feel the heartbeat of his child from where it grew within her body.
His eyes fluttered shut as a wave of overwhelming peace, of happiness, took him. Juliet pressed her forehead against his.
“I choose you,” she whispered against his skin. “Always.”
