“I agree, but this is what you wanted. You guys needed the confirmation and we’re about to get it,” I said.
This hurt. I was choking back tears. Not, because I wanted him in my life, but this was ridiculous. Dr. Sharon came back into the room and swabbed Isaiah.
“Dr. Sharon, when will the results be back?” I asked.
“Let’s give it about a week, just in case, and when the results come back, I’ll give you a call.”
“Okay, great. Thank you doctor,” I said.
“Well, you two babies will be all set to go home in about an hour or so,” Dr. Sharon said.
“Thanks,” I said, smiling. We’re going home, my ‘lil love.”
Isaiah was smiling at the both of us.
“Do you mind if I hold him?” he asked, shyly.
“Nope, not at all.” I said handing him the small package.
He sat in the chair across from me to hold him.
“Hey, ‘lil guy. I’m your daddy,” Isaiah said.
“So, what did you decide to name him?” he asked.
“Isaiah, meet your son, Robert Everette Smith,” I said proudly.
“Oh…” he said.
“What is it?” I asked. You don’t like the name?”
“I kinda thought he would have my last name,” he said.
Really? Did he really think that? After all he’s put me through these past few months?
“Wait. What? Why would you think that? We aren’t married,” I said.
“Is that what you want? Us to be married?” he asked.
“Nope. Not at all,” I said. He’s not going to have your last name.
“Can’t we talk about this?” he asked.
“It’s not up for discussion,” I said, as I shrugged.
We sat in silence until Amy and Jake walked in. They were shocked to see Isaiah sitting there holding the baby. I was still in shock.
“Hey, guys! Wait. Jake, what are you doing here? I thought I was going to see you later tonight,” I asked.
He stared at Isaiah with a cold look on his face.
“So, Isaiah, when did you get here?” Jake asked. Because you’ve been M.I.A. this whole time.”
Oh, great. I did not need there to be any type of confrontation here at the hospital or anywhere else for that matter. I looked at Amy panicked.
“Guys, guys, let’s not do this here or anywhere,” I said.
Amy stood beside Jake just in case he tried to lunge at him or something.
“I know I’ve been absent and I’ve apologized—to the one that matters,” Isaiah said. “I’m here now and I’m all in and that’s what matters.”
“You have some nerve…” Jake said. Zen, I’ll meet you guys at the house.”
Jake stormed out of the hospital room.
“Do you mind if I come by later?” Isaiah asked.
“Isaiah, that may not be the best idea. There will be people there that are not happy with you, and I’m not filling my house with negativity,” I said.
“I thought you said you wouldn’t keep him from me?” Isaiah questioned, looking concerned.
“And I’m not. I said it’s not a good idea to be around people who want your head on a platter. Trust me, this is for your own good.”
Isaiah was still cuddling with the baby and stood up to give him back to me.
“Okay, I understand…” he said. I’ll wait for you to call.”
He kissed the baby on the forehead and me on the cheek.
That took me—and Amy—by surprise.
“I’ll be sure to call you,” I said.
He disappeared behind the door. Amy looked at me with her eyes wide open.
“Whoa,” she said.
“Yeah, I know, right? And no I didn’t know he was coming today. Surprised us all,” I said.
“Jake was about to whoop his behind!” Amy said laughing.
Dr. Sharon came back in and released us and had a nurse walk us all down to the car.
“Well, ‘lil guy, say good-bye to your first room…” I said smiling.
On the way home all I could think about was our future. How I wanted the best for my baby. I loved this little guy more than I ever realized. He may have been conceived in a loveless relationship, but I would have more than enough love for him.
We finally made it home and my mom had invited some friends and family over. She also cooked a ginormous feast! I was hoping it was only going to be us, but I enjoyed the company.
Amy and Jake decided to spend the night and I am grateful. Robert gave us all a run for our money during the night. We were all zombies the next morning. Jake got up first and started brewing coffee. The smell of freshly brewed coffee woke me. When I woke up, the baby was still sleeping, thank goodness!
I walked into the kitchen and he had a cup already made for me.
“Oh my god, thank you!” I said.
“Good morning and you’re welcome,” he said laughing. Robert has some lungs on him!”
I laughed.
“Yeah, and just think you weren’t even in the same room with him,” I said laughing.
“I know! You want breakfast?” he asked.
I nodded as I sipped my coffee. I looked over and saw the stack of mail from the past few days.
“Thanks for getting the mail,” I said.
“No prob,” he said preparing breakfast.
I sat at the table looking through everything. I came across a manila envelope, and opened that first. As I read over the letter my face dropped and I yelled!
“Oh my god!!” I said, as I broke down crying.
Jake turned around and rushed over to the table. Amy was just walking into the kitchen.
“What’s wrong?” Jake asked.
“Zen, baby, what’s wrong?” Amy asked.
I looked at the both of them with tears streaming down my face.
“Isaiah and Keeley are suing me for full custody of Robert!”
