“Let’s go to Europe! We can do a tour. The highlights. We might not get time for a little while after that. What do you think?” I asked him.
It took some convincing, but I knew Carter would come around. I just kept dropping hints with the brochures. We were at dinner one night, sitting across from one another. My eyes drooped as I fought sleep.
“Hey, hey, give her to me, and you go lay down for a while. You’re exhausted.”
I yawned. “Sounds good. I’m beat.” I turned my back to walk to the bedroom.
“While you’re napping, dream of Europe. I was waiting to tell you. I managed to clear three weeks.”
I ran back to him, wide awake, and gave him a bear hug. “You’re the best! I’m so happy, yes!” Carter rocked Isabella in his arms as I kissed him on the cheek. The yawns came back.
“We were always going. I just had to rework a few things. I love you. Plus, we need some time together. I’ve got to get back to me romancing you. I’m working too hard, and you’re working way too hard. Enough already. We can leave Isabella with your parents. I trust them. She’s nearly fifteen-months-old now.”
“My parents would love to have her. My mother’s been begging for me to bring her around. Especially now, since I’ve switched her to the bottle.”
Carter shooed me away. “Go sleep, woman.”
Not long after, we left our precious bundle at my parents’ place. I bit my lip with nerves as the mommy guilt set in.
Carter squeezed my hand. “Don’t worry. She’s going to be fine, honey.”
But as soon as we touched down in Europe and received a few calls from them, I relaxed and let my hair down. We had a lot of sexy time in Europe. A whole lot. Our love life had been replaced temporarily with burping, feeding, and business schedules. The places we saw blew me away. Switzerland, Italy, Venice, Paris, and Amsterdam. Europe seemed to be a world unto itself. My vitality bounced back, and I felt like a kid again as we explored. As much as I enjoyed it, though, I was happy to get back to Isabella and resume my beautiful domestic life.
Three weeks after the honeymoon, life in California settled back in. The everyday groove returned. On this night, I had a meal prepared for my guy, one of his favorites, chicken pot pie. It was a simple dish, but for some reason, he loved my version. Plus, he could have a glass of wine. I looked at my watch and saw that Carter was due home any minute. Isabella was down for her nap. I set up the candles and lowered the lights.
“What?” Carter exclaimed as he walked through the door. His eyes went to the candles, then to the floor where I had gotten creative with some rose petals from the garden.
I giggled at his dumbfounded expression.
“Take a load off, babe, and rest.” I went to him, kissing him full on the lips. He nestled into my neck.
“Hmm. I like this treatment, but I thought our special occasion was Europe? I’m not complaining, though.” He sniffed and smiled. “Is that chicken pot pie you’re making? Wow! You went all out.”
“I thought you’d like it.”
“Of course I do. Babe, you only poured one glass of wine. Where’s yours?”
I looked at my nails and then looked at him coyly. I didn’t answer as he took a sip. He stopped, and his face changed dramatically. He put his glass down.
“Wait a minute. Are you?”
I nodded my head. “Yep!” I held up the pregnancy test as proof. “I’ve had the test for a week, but I wanted to go to the doctor first and confirm it. It looks like we are having twins, baby!”
“Wow!” Carter held his head in disbelief. “I’m so happy and so in love with you. We’re going to have a whole motorcycle crew.”
“I’m in love with you, too, Carter Harrington, and proud to be carrying your children.” A tear rolled down my cheek as I said it. I loved him so much, and I enjoyed every minute of our crazy lives.
With Carter Harrington, life was destined to be a wild ride, and this vixen was more than up for the challenge.
